View Full Version : Just Curious,.........take-offs

When ever I fly in servers I noticed almost all players just start engines and open the throttle. Then they dance a jig across the surrounding fields until they're airborn.

When ever I play I always taxi and takeoff on the runway. Does anyone else do this? It's the same with landing. I see most guyz bailing when ammo or fuel is low. I like to land, taxi to the parking area, retract the flaps, and engine shutdown. I feel it adds a lot to the game and takes out the "arcadeness"(new word).

So, I was just curious, does anyone else do this? Does it give you the same "closer to real feeling"?

BTW, no need to thank me for not turning this into another poll. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I do much the same, but then I don't fly d/f servers that often. But a clean t/o and landing seem important to me - just a tad more real somehow http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It depends on the server settings. I find that on the more full real servers, people tend to take more care with takeoffs and landings. On servers that have more "arcadeness" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif settings, its a free for all to get airborne. It seems that the taxiways are for takeoffs while the runways are more open for the planes trying to land (especially the damaged ones). I actually think you are in more danger of an accident trying to takeoff on the runway in an arcade server. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif I haven't experienced too many guys bailing for no reason like you have.

I really do think that it just depends on the server's game settings. The more "arcadey" (my new word), the more hectic the takeoffs will be. I think it's just the nature of this game. Also, in arcadish games you tend to die a lot more because you can go gung ho into battle so many people don't want to take the time to go through landing procedures.

2 cents.

I fly with EAF92 and we always start on the runway in our co ops and hopefully at the end we all land taxi and park up next to each other.

It takes longer more its more fun

I too try to taxi to a runway and take off. If somehow I don't get shot down, I try to land. Of couse, half the time it's hard for me to tell where the grass runways are when taking off. Of course, if there's someone shooting at me anytime during all of that, all rules are out the window...

Forgot to add, I usually fly full real (or close to). Not sure I'd bother on other servers.

I take off using the taxi strips, reserving the runway for landing AC.

General rule on many DF servers.

Take off: Taxiway
Landing: Airstrip

i don't like cross country takeoffs (you can hit your teammates who are taking off in the accepted fashion too easily).

But I generally don't taxi to the runway, I scramble, which is find the easiest long stretch of finished ground, usually a taxiway, and firewall my throttle. I always make sure to watch out for teamies.

I totally agree about the taxiway runway deal. It is almost like an unwritten rule that most planes will takeoff on the taxiway and landings occur on the runway.

As a rule for myself, i always try to accomodate landing planes cause i know just like you all how it feels to land with shot wings, missing rudder and dead prop http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)) esp when you know that your slightest mistake will give the enemy 100 grands (or 2 or 4 depending on number of engines) for the pelt of your poor squad mate. Am i ovedramatizing here?

I always take off from the bases that are getting vulched, so, as you could guess, I'm high tailing it into the air..

Pump my throttle, raise my flaps, keep it level, prop pitch 100 for 2 seconds, and BOOm i'm up there spinning with the best of em.

I at least taxi on to the hard pack or concrete.it's makes it a little easier to get airborne.fighters dont matter much ,bombers you'll never get off the ground unless you use the strip.

And when you get pounded in an heavy base attack some time is a great way to take off with out been killed too easly..

two comments on this

- on some servers the unoffical "rule" is take off on taxiways and land on runways .. this avoids collisons

- it has never been confirmed but has been often claimed that taking off with a cold engine (below 40C ) has a random negative effect on engine performance .. its certainly the case on the lagg that the temp warning light is on for low temp as well as high

Oh the frustration with ppl who insist on breaking to a full stop on the middle of the runway and then sloowly start to taxi on it all the way round to taxiway and then off to parking. DUH i specially remember one dufus who did that, i was coming in with a fuel leak flying on the fumes (after a succesful sortie though), i had to pull up and make another approach. Fuel ran out, the engine died and i was too low to bale so i crashed and died...our team lost a plane and a pilot cos he just had play around on the runway http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif Not to mention it wouldve been fun to try to land that shot up crate.

When designing servers, try putting in plenty of AA at each of the bases to make vulching a risky and unprofitable experience. It should also create enough ground obstacles to encourage pilots to use the runways. And yes, I always try to use the runways to takeoff and land.

F19_Olli72 man,
That's the best sig I have seen here in years!
Do you have a bigger version?I would like to hang it on my hangar wall.I received permission from my wife to have the whole attic and I'm intending to make it look like a hangar.I like the photo as I like other ones that I have already framed on my walls.

Congrats on that sig, I envy people who can create art like that. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

BBOT: I always try to land and take-off correctly. If I get holed, I'll attempt to retreat... but there's always a wise guy who will follow you and blow you out of the sky. So, I try and be the bait if I know I'm not going to make is.

Trailing smoke and fuel? I can have three n00bs following me, all wanting to bag me. And behind them is my wingman... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As for taking off on taxi ways and landing on strips I think like many have said, it is the unofficial rule and I do practice it.

As for fullstops on landing strips 1000m under a furball, yeah, that tends to ruffle a few feathers. I always plan my landings(when possible) so I can have my speed reduced enough to turn onto the taxiway. If I over run it I will run over the "Stay off grass" sign just to clear the strip.

What a really hate is coming in smoking or with a dead engine and making a near perfect 3 point landing, proud, and relaxing a sweating stick grip and suddenly hear the roar of an off road warbird, followed by a sudden explosion. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

Oleg, can we have landing strip guardrails in the next patch? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
