View Full Version : Less Cinematics in AC4

I asked Ashraf on twitter about this. I am playing AC3 again and its just Cutscene, Cutscene, Cutscene... really irritating!

Anyway, my response from Ashraf was basically that there are less cinematics and more story will be told in the gameplay.

Happy?

Me too...

However, I guess with the seamless gameplay they probably don't need that many. Then, if it lives up to my expectations, the game will be like one huge cutscene. :D

So you're the one who has been rigging the AC report to suit your needs? Poor AC3 devs, they believed the AC report of YOUR needs was the ones the forumers want. It was all you wasn't it? They were tricked into making the game you wanted. Haha, but your cover has been blown, the AC4 devs saw through your lies.

I'd like my upgraded tinfoil hat by tomorrow.

Games aren't movies, cutscenes should be used in a very smooth way and not to take a lot of the gameplay time.

Lol, come to think of it, we have probably seen most of the cutscenes in all those trailers.

We do, but not using cutscene crutches - that's using another media. Games as a media are cavemen and using a different medium certainly doesn't help the industry. I want to see the story from our own perspective as a "game" not a "video". Usage of cutscenes is fine, but excessive usage...that's bad.

Also, AC's problem is the cutscenes are started and ended by white screens, mostly. It can seem.. jarring. Some games integrate cutscenes well enough so you don't explicitly feel you're watching a cutscene. They should look to do something like that.

I agree with you. I've played games when it moves between them seamlessly. No loading or white screens at all. Maybe they will do that with ACIV. They have promised us seamlessness. I'd like to think that means between gameplay and cutscenes too.

Of course AC1 had many cutscenes. Every time you would pickpocket or eavesdrop there was a cutscene. Only the important ones had the cinematic glitches though. And yes, the break between cutscenes and gameplay in AC3 was just awful. It would load even for the shortest of scenes. Just ruins the whole flow.

I-Like-Pie45

I think it helps with story progression and at the same time it doesn't take away from gameplay. If done correctly.

People like cut-scenes because they are used to a cinematographic kind of storytelling, through the pictures. But videogames are not movies. And as long as they will continue to try to copy cinema, they won't reach a real form, from an artistic point of view. If you watch a movie only for its scenario, then just read a book. Here that's the same : if you play a game just to be told a story through cut-scenes, then just watch a movie. Videogames are an opportunity to experiment a new kind of storytelling, through the gameplay. That's why so many people who were originally studying cinema came to the videogame industry ; because it's a medium which hasn't reached yet a stable form nor a grammar, that's all the challenge !
We are still waiting for the Citizen Kane of videogames.

By the way, that's also why we see more and more open world games. Because they let the player do whatever he wants, and therefore they let him write his own story.
Darby McDevitt wrote a more than interesting article on the subject for Gamasutra. I advise everybody to read it. :)

Great question, even better answer :D. I don't hate all cutscenes, but I think they should be used sparingly. Especially in the middle of missions, because they break the flow. Sometimes they are used for rechnical reasons (like boarding in AC3) which I won't judge, if they can't really solve it any other way. But the more the game let the player do the better. Cutscenes are still fine for key story moments and dialogue.

The amount of cut scenes in AC3 really was ridiculous. On my second playthrough it started to bug me early as I realized how many missions were basically just "walk 20 feet to the next marker" and each marker would initiate another cut scene. It felt really jarring, like I was watching a movie when I wanted to play a game.

That reminds me... Did anyone get the glitch when you hunt the bear. Mine got stuck in the wall o_0. Luckily, I still managed to kill it somehow. Also, quite a few wolves got stuck in trees. -_- They just kept running and that continuous growling. It was impossible to kill them and I tried everything. I had the most awesomest glitch happen to me in the history of AC. Was roaming around Boston when the skirts of girls around Connor disappeared!

No glitch can measure against it.. :D

Didn't they have "exciting underwear" in that time? too bad... :(

Jesus isn't a virgin, he was the father of Muhammed!

Of course, the evil capitalist carnivore Buddhist Atheist conspiracy wants us to forget that so we Christian and Muslim brothers destroy each other so them can move in and take what is ours... but we can recover the truth!

Well, my glitch managed to make even Connor smile. That's worth something, right?

Yves controls our minds.

As for this thread. Yes, i would like less cinematics, but none. I really like the way AC1 did it, allowing us tio move around and such, but i also appreciate a bit of flashy flashy action YEAH! HOORAH!
If you get me?
