"You’ll Never Feel Like These Activities Are Superfluous”

One of the biggest criticisms against Assassin’s Creed III, if you don’t count the numerous bugs, boring campaign, disappointing ending and a humdrum protagonist, was the utter uselessness of the side missions in the long run. Fortunately, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag creative director Jean Guesdon has revealed that this won’t be the case for the next game.
“We have a huge Caribbean open-world that is full of activities and side-missions. We have forts to raid, shipwrecks to discover, smuggler caves to infiltrate, ally ships to escort, trade routes to disrupt, animals to hunt, collectibles to find, etc.
“The key thing here is that all of these activities make sense in the context of the open-world—you will never feel like any of these activities are superfluous, they are all present for a reason, and they are all fun to complete. You are completing these activities to become a stronger pirate and a better assassin.”
Guesdon also revealed that in terms of control mechanics, “The combat plays very similarly to AC3’s combat, but those extra additions that you mentioned really take it to a whole new level. The multi-pistols mechanic enables you to shoot any enemy mid-combo, so it gives a whole new dimension to how you approach a combat situation. Free-aim enables you to pick off some enemies before the fight even starts, which also helps a lot.”

I like the stupid intro. Quite idiotic, but amusing.

I hate the author of this article. However, I like the sound of the side-missions. So hard to be not hyped. I'll try as much as I can to not be. Quick! Someone remind me of the AC3 marketing.

I love how there wasn't even an attempt to defend the game there. Just call Prince an idiot.

This does seem interesting though. Chunks of AC3 seemed completely pointless. Nice to see they're trying to improve on that.

Oh God, not that. I remember that thing with the kid stealing the apple that was horribly scripted and only happened when meeting the sissy version of Charles Lee at the beginning. Horrible. Ashraf and Darby seem trustworthy though. They have this weird likeness and genuineness to them that you just can't discredit them.

I was just thinking... won't multi-pistols make combat too easy...?

If the enemy is as weak as previous games yes, i hope that in black flag you can kill enemies fast, but they can kill you fast too. That would make combat feel more realistic, fast and challenging.

yes... no surprise here though... :)

did they say in an interview if the pistols will have some sort of cooldown to avoid abuse? Also when we reload our pistols, will Edward perform one animation for all of them (reload one gun, all the others are reloaded as well) or reload all of them (one animation per gun)?

It would be ridiculous when Edard can reloud 4 pistols at once.

They're not mandatory. If you don't use them, you'll definitely find more challenge if at all. They're just there for flashy, cool finishes.

IMO if you (not you, but the player in general) need to avoid the use of a certain tool to have some sort of challenge then they're doing it wrong..

Ashraf said " there will be enemies you can't just kill them at the beginning of the game"

That was in relevance to the naval, definitely not normal enemy NPCs.

Regarding NPCs, he said that if you want a challenge, don't "upgrade" Edward.

Neither do I but if we're supposed to upgrade him, it would make sense that the enemies will be difficult. Frost said enemies will be too easy to beat if we upgrade Edward. I was asking if that is true.

As for upgrading Edward cosmetically, I'd love to do that! xD

One problem with AC content in general is that the devs are too scared of challenging the player in any way. Thus most activities feel like chores instead of obstacles that you need to concentrate and use your imagination to overcome. I wonder if they will try to vary the difficulty a bit more this time.

He didn't say it wouldn't be challenging. He said that those seeking a greater challenge should not upgrade Edward.

Ok. You just confused me :)

And this is what you said originally:

Regarding NPCs, he said that if you want a challenge, don't "upgrade" Edward.

This implies that it's not a challenge if you "upgrade" Edward.

So... you're saying it will be challenging, but if you want a "greater" challenge, don't upgrade him... right?

More or less. It's still very vague at this point considering we don't really understand what "upgrading" Edward means and its implications, as well as our lack of knowledge about the costume functions and how the combat would play out. Due to all of that and the utterly unseen combat of AC4, I'd say we should take even Ashraf's words with a grain of salt simply due to the fact that this matter is shrouded in vagueness.

why does it matter anyway. Assassin's Creed has never been a game about challenge.

I believe that actually is the case in the new game. 2 gun shot and you're dead in this one. Also according to the same interview they are trying to balance the combat in between too easy and too hard. I'm interested to see what the solution will be.

I love AC!! xD ANY game should have some challenging elements. I guess, though, maybe that will make it difficult for some people to enjoy. Then maybe they should have difficulty levels. Then everyone would be happy.

Cool, sounds good.

Really curious to see how that "shoot enemies mid-combo" thingy works.
