Hey all--

I have these custom skins I made (from Leadspitter's excellent template, btw) that no one else seems to be able to see. My question is: If I set SkinDownload = 0 in my conf.ini (which I believe disables my machine from downloading skins of other players while online), does it also stop the UPLOAD of my skin to other players who have SkinDownload set to 1?

I did a forum search on this topic and came up empty, so I figured it'd be OK to post this.

Thanks.

I am not sure whether disabling "skin download" stops the traffic in both directions, but it's possible.

The determinating factor however would be the server, I believe.

its who ever is hosting, if the host server has skin dls set for 1, users on the server who have it set to 1 will see the skins but people set to 0 wont.

what I was wondering if multiple users have the same skin name with skins dls off will it show online if the skin is in the aircraft plane name folder as well as the netcache folder.

I remember 361 or 352 squad saying that works with skin dls off but I have not seen it work personally. I have 20+ skins in each plane dir but none show and I never see any online Im sure i have the same skin names as many other users hammereds sootys ats42 cannonuks etc. Its also why I have not been making skins anymore since they take 8-18 hours ea for a really detailed skin and template from scratch and no one sees them

I've decided that the skins are mostly fun for the squads, and private IP games. Big servers that allow alot of pilots, and have a big turnover of who may be in within the next 5 minutes (e.g. Slammin's, Warclouds, etc . . .) will have more lag problems than you can shake the proverbial stick at http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I love all my skins, and wish that everyone could see them http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif , but gameplay on public servers is more important; I'll show off my skins to my buds when we fly.

That is really disappointing to me. When I first heard of this simulation I had high hopes that there would be huge numbers of individual pilots flying with custom painted planes. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I'm 40 years old and wondering if this will be possible in my life time? It has been possible in the past but with limited graphics. What will it take to have the graphics and play of Il2 but with hundreds in a single server?

Well - this info is mostly from SPaRX (WarClouds)...

Image a host allows 10 players to join a game with skins on and none in his cache yet...

Now we have 2 kind of skins now, the 512x512 and the 1024x1024 ones - the first is 263,222 bytes, the second is 1,049,654 Bytes (thats .25 and 1 MegaByte) PER SKIN. Lets assume worst-case = everyone's got a Big and beautifull skin http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Every player will upload his skin to the Host, so the Host has to download 10MByte of skins.

This is only the start though...

Now comes the tricky part...
The Host will distribute ALL skins to the players (assuming they have no skins in their cache either). And that will be 10 x 10 MegaByte = 100 MegaByte of skins to UPLOAD http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif - now most upload speeds are WAY lower than download speeds - so this is VERY VERY bad... because AT THE SAME TIME the host will also sent the game data to players (all of them), and receive data from each player...

Now imagine the players have 56k http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif - See your skin next year I'd say http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
This is why sometimes in the middle of a game a plane will "change skin" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif it took that time to get there...

If Host and Player have the same skin in thier net-cache allready it will not be sent... But imagine HOW LONG it will take to have all player's skins in there (and they change them too)...

You see now why skin d/l should be off I hope...

I REALY HOPE:
Oleg will change the skin format to something else (anything is better realy) than that STUPID Window's BMP format - (no compression AT ALL)... that might help some...

OK...so according to LL, it is not feasible to have skins "ON" for online play.

I'm bummed, then, because some planes simply do not have adequate skin choices for online play. We've now got essentially four major terrain types (water, desert, grassland/forest, and snow) where you can typically have water mixed in to the last three. For adequate (IMO) camouflage, you'd need seven default skins per plane type:
1. Water
2. Desert
3. Grassland/forest
4. Snow
5. Desert-water
6. Grassland/forest-water
7. Snow-Water
I think using bitmaps (BMPs) isn't the wisest choice, either, due to the lack of compression.

I guess that in the mean time, picking "void" for all snow conditions would work. But generally for online play, I do NOT like sticking out in a shiny P-51 or P-47.
