Ubisoft has confirmed that the former THQ Montreal project codenamed 1666 has been suspended. During a call reporting earnings for Ubisoft’s 2013 fiscal year, CEO Yves Guillemot said “we have suspended project 1666 for an undisclosed period of time.”

Guillemot also commented on Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Desilets - the former head of the 1666 project - noting that “After more than two months of discussions with Patrice, we couldn’t align our visions both on the project development and team management. Consequently, our collaboration has ended.” Last week, Desilets was fired from Ubisoft and called the company’s actions “baseless and without merit.”

At the time, Desilets said he intended “to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game." 1666 is the codename of a project originally in development at THQ Montreal that was acquired by Ubisoft in January. Beyond its codename being revealed in court documents and a trademark, little is known about the project.

The reson they suspended it according to Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/the-mystery-game-from-assassins-creed-designer-is-offi-506929108):

"Ubisoft "indefinitely suspending production" on 1666 is way for them to cancel the game w/o giving back Desilets his IP as per his contract. Desilets contract specifies that IP rights revert to him in event of the game's cancellation, similar to the arrangement Del Toro had w/ THQ. Hence the talk of why Patrice is pursuing legal options in order to assume control of the IP Ubisoft optioned."

Kind of a crappy thing to do towards an artist. Buy his creation and then lock it up, guarded by lawyers, so he can't work on it anymore. And so AC remains alone in its genre when it so desperately needs competition :(.

Just reading that pisses me off. So underhanded for Ubisoft.

I won't sponsor this corrupted publisher anymore. I'm sorry for all the great artists working on these games.

I can't sponsor a publisher that treats creative minds like this.
