I didn't catch from the commentary...why did he do a rolling landing instead of a vertical one?

Strange landing... I mean helicopters are not gliders.

They don`t say what actually went wrong.

I think there was something wrong w/ the tail rotor. the commentator said that he was attempting to avoid yawing.

Great footage!

I would guess he had trouble with the rotor pitch control and could not hover. Then he would have to keep RPM up to come in straight and still be able to pull up if the aim was off.

I'll bet a few of the passengers need clean shorts when they got out! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Standard emergency landing procedures. Used to see them all the time at Fort Indian Town Gap.

"So when Diogenes perceived that he was greatly excited and quite keyed up in mind with expectancy, he toyed with him and pulled him about in the hope that somehow he might be moved from his pride and thirst for glory and be able to sober up a little. For he noticed that at one time he was delighted, and at another grieved at the same thing, and that his soul was as unsettled as the weather at the solstices when both rain and sunshine come from the very same source."

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Hey guys,

Great video. That took place in Las Vegas obviously. If you have ever been there you can see these tour choppers flying all around. A couple have crashed in the desert over the years, but I have never seen one do that! The commentator is Gary Wadell. A long time Vegas news anchor. He's a tool. Absolutely the biggest talking head I have ever seen on TV. Anyways, waching that clip was like being back in Vegas. Thanks for sharing it.

Loss of tail rotor, a helicopter can be landed with fwd a/s of 40kts or better.

For those people who made comments saying that helos are don't normally land like that, you are right. they don't. But they can land like that and all helo pilots are taught how to land like that. It's call autorotation. What do you think you'd do if your engine quit, you'd have to glide in using your main rotors. Auto-gyros and gyrocopters fly like that. The forward speed keeps the rotor blades spinning, even without engine power. You only have to nose her down while she still had forward speed, then you simply autorotate to the ground. Hopefully you'll find a nice open field or something on the way down.

I take that back, I shouldn't have posted before I saw the video. But it wouldn't load for me for a long time, even though I have DSL. But the pilot still had plenty of power, so it was not an autorotation. He just kept his speed up high enough to weathervane the tail, which apparently had no or little power power to the tail rotor.

Hmmmm, that is the ONLY way I can land choppers in MSFS ... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif
