I dont get it...You move your head anyway, but you still have to keep your eyes on the screen, sounds kindof uncomfortable, why would you use this?

they are very small head movements. your nose only moves a few inches in any direction. you can set the sensitivity of it. if you had 3 monitors you would set it a lot less so

If you have to turn your head more than a couple of inches you don't have it configured correctly. It isn't a 1 to 1 scale of movement. On my 19 inch monitor it's about the equivalent of me turning my head to look directly at each edge of the screen.

I'm constantly amazed at the number of people who assume this to be the case...

its definatly a nice advantage, and fun to use.

Its very overpriced and mines been collecting dust for months and sold it a to a fellow il2fb member a couple months ago, since it collected dust most of the time.

I do just as good with mouse cursor control on my x45 trottle.

People who are users of trackIR better be carefull if they get pulled over by the cops.

All that moving your head one way and looking the other will make you fail certain sobriety tests.

To each his own, however. If you are the type of gamer who can't tell while panning that trackIR doesn't refresh high enough (it's designed for handicapped people, not gamers) and if you are the type of guy who doesn't care the individual difficulty settings to make the game better, just "full real baby" then you might like it.

it doesnt have to be your head

i just attached my dots to a can of beer and control my view moving that around

for an interesting and challenging game stick your dots to your cat and have it sit and watch the monitor

Geeze, Ray can't you let it go just once?

Why do you always feel the need to take your little jabs?

Well think about buying it than! As many pointed out, it is not a 1 to 1 head movment, too look over your right shoulder in the GAME is equal to you moving your head looking straight ahead to pointing your nose to the right edge of the monitor.

Keep in mind that it does take a little getting use to! Espically if you are the type that is use to the POV HAT keys or leting Padlock do all your work for you. I found that the fist few times I used it that I was moving my head.. but I was still pressing the POV hat in the heat of battle! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Basically what Im saying is you have to spend a little time with it to learn and UN-LEARN some things.

As someone pointed out it was initally developed for handicapped people, where the idea is they may be disabled and can not use thier hands.. And thus is a hands free device. They also made mention of refresh rates while panning.. keep in mind that he has never actually seen a TrackIR in action, he makes that statment based on IL2 TRACK files. Basically both statments are based on some kind of bias and or ignorance. Eitherway, I recomend you buy and and see for yourself. Or try and find someone or some store that has one you can try out.

The good points are TrackIR provides you with the look and feel of the pilot moving his head around the cockpit.. just like the mouse and padlocks does.

The bad points is TrackIr is slower than the POV HAT keys or KEYBORD keys.. That is to say you can check six faster with the POV HAT and KEYBORD.

Summary the good outweights the bad! The sense of imersion is second to none! It is the best thing to happen to sims sense the joystick!!

I just opened one ordered from ED. Installed software, plugged it in and launched IL-2. Boom, two kills. Feels very natural. You almost dont even think about it, just look. I sewed a small eraser cap on the end of a baseball hat and covered it with the reflective dots. Works great.

not to be argumentative but...........HUH?
No problem with mine while checking my six.... track IR is very responsive, and faster that the hat switch.

Note.. I didnt say it was a problem!!

Hmmm.. Ok.. but tell me.. With a POV hat, I can be pressing the BACK LEFT view.. then.. I can press the BACK RIGHT view.. ie jump from one to the next WITHOUT going through all the intermediate views..

That is to say all I have to do is...

LOOK BACK LEFT
LOOK BACK RIGHT

That is to say I DONT have to do this..

LOOK BACK LEFT
LOOK LEFT
LOOK FRONT LEFT
LOOK FRONT
LOOK FRONT RIGHT
LOOK RIGHT
LOOK BACK RIGHT

But with TrackIR I *DO* have to look at all those views

So.. maybe.. just maybe you head can turn that fast.. but dont blame me if you go to be with a sore neck! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

tagert, seeing what you wrote, you have problem with your TrackIR.

Check yours again or upgrade PC. Hat can't be faster than TrackIR with six check.

No need, my 5900 works fine /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I disagree.. don't take it personal, I just think begin able to discontinuity jump from one view to the next with out hitting the intermediate steps is faster.

He's probably talking about the hookview cheat (conf.ini mod)

Then it makes your head go turbo. I don't use it though. In fact, I have considered slowing my hatswitch view down so I can see more while it pans.

It's just tagert trying to make something up about how trackIR is actually a handicap .. lol. So instead of cursing trackIR gear users and how they are hurting the game by lobbying to get rid of padlock and dividing the world into the have and have-nots, we should instead feel sorry for them because hatswitch view is better (according to tagert).

i find my trackir response is instantaneous and the few inches of head movement from right 6 to left 6 is insignificant ..

the one (minor) problem i had with trackir was i could not run trackir on the same USB hub as my FBB joystick or optical mouse as the current demand combining trackir with these other high current devices was too much for the USB

WHOOPS! MY BAD!! Dont know what I was thinkin.. got snap view and pan views mixxed up with another sim.. Been using TrackIR so long I forgot that IL2's *snap* views actully do *pan* from one view to the next! So, forgive me, I was wrong when I said you could skip from one view to the next without hitting all the views inbetween!! And I agree, TracIR is faster than the HAT keys due to that! Sorry for any confusing I caused!! Ill have to update my list! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
