So in this article http://www.examiner.com/article/ac-iv-black-flag-a-quick-history-of-1715-and-why-it-is-a-good-starting-point it talks about why 1715 was the perfect year to start the game. Basically that the end of a major war in which navies for many nations were built up to never before seen levels created a massive amount of unemployed sailors through Europe and the New World. Conditions were bad and many of them were starving to death and had no means to support themselves. When a treasure fleet sunk off the coast of Florida, sailors from all over the world flocked to the Caribbean to get a piece of the treasure. While most didn't get any of it, it left the Caribbean full of highly trained sailors with military experience. Most of the pirates you have heard about in legends and history were all in the same place at the same time. It was really an incredible period of time. All the conditions lined up just perfectly to spark the final phase of the Golden Age of Pirates. I for one am excited to explore this time period. I liked the naval missions in AC3 and I think this will be a good game set in an amazing period.

Not to mention they needed to set it during the era when Blackbeard and Calico Jack were active. Otherwise... well, what's the point of a pirate game?

Yeah but that is the point of the article... 1715 is the year when all those guys were in the same place at the same time... along with Sam Bellamy and a lot of others. What happened in 1715 is what brought many of them to the Caribbean
