Well, its been confirmed again, lifeboats will not be in the game, for me that is the final word of the matter, nothing will change their minds now to include them.

Fair play to them, they list how it would consume to much development time and processor power, and given how much they're breaking ground in other areas i can certainly understand why this is the way they've decided to go. At the end of the day i would of hated it if they'd given into pressure, but only to do it 1/2 as well as they would of wanted, and for it not to be in keeping with the rest of the game quality.

It would of however added a significant amount of realism (as they admit), and out of all the things that have been suggested to add to this game since the original 'overall' plan became known, it would have right up there (although still comfortably behind) the impact of a dynamic campaign in terms of benefiting this game i believe.

It really would have been the 'icing on the cake' if we could of had accurate dynamics of how escorts had to cope with the dilemma of rescuing survivors, as this was a truly significant (not cosmetic) part of convoy operations and with it not included we really will be escaping a significant part of the simulation.

Needless to say though, it would have been a minefield of difficulty, and been an appalling blot on the game if not done well (potentially open to huge player abuse/lack of realism if not programmed accurately).

When it comes to SH4 (or SH3 expansion pack!) i'm sure you know what the community will expect you to include though. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have lobbied in vain for this feature even with a very succesful Poll on the topic.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v463/RedTerex/lifeboat-titanic.gif
The results of which I proudly present here for you and let the figures speak for themselves.

Results (172 votes counted so far):

67%
YES. include life-boats with full realism.

17%
YES. include life-boats that cannot be shot at

6%
NO. I dont want them.

10%
I'm not fussed either way.

Well Devteam it will not just be myself who has to understand your desision not to include lifeboats but 84% of your community as well and 84% of anything is a lot.

On the side of resources and CPU power I would not like to see the game abridged or consised in any way to accommodate lifeboats, so on that angle and its a nice anglehttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v463/RedTerex/aniwink.gif I will agree.

Lifeboats would not have been an essential part of the game in any way but just a nice feature to complete the overall excercise of sinking vessels in a graphical type of epilogue.

The moral dillemmas are up to the player as I see it and not up to the game developer. The lifeboat feature could have been activated on a parental or violence control feature.

I'm sadhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v463/RedTerex/rain-on.gif to see this feature has not made it. I will still purchase the game though and I still hope to enjoy the game.

I would like it known that I still thank you the Devteam for all the efforts and hard work that you are putting into SH3.

And there's me buying a top end new system in Dec or the New year for the lifeboats alone http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

do you think we could move away from this topic once and for all and try new ones, I'm all for the more smaller boats being added to http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You can. Go ahead and start a new one. No-one is stopping you. Make it a good topic and we'll discuss it. But will it be worth over 300 posts/5000 views like this one? I hope you can. I'll support you in doing so if it's worth it like this one has been.

Good Luckhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/hauitsme/target.gif

Yeah, maybe so Taskforce, but This " moral dillemma" BS will still be a thorn even in SH4, its one of those things that wont go away.

SILENT HUNTER 4
WARNING:CAUTION:WARNING:CAUTION
THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS SCENES OF LIFEBOAT RESCUE AND PLAYER DISGRESSION IS ADVISED AS SOME SCENES MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR YOUNGER PLAYERS!http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v463/RedTerex/bit-fall-off.gif

I am now more inclined to think that lifeboats for those intrepid pixel fellas, yes those brave little pixel geezers who crew those ships in U-Boat infested waters will have to hope together with us that a patch or mod comes to their rescue.

The ship is sinking! the ship is sinking!...quick...wheres the patch?
OR
The ship is sinking! the ship is sinking!...is...is...the MoD installed??

While I don't like the decision to not include lifeboats in the game, the devs reasoning might just be not wanting to deal with any bad feedback. Media might attack it as somehow supporting barbaric behavior or something. I don't see how included lifeboats would somehow greatly increase processor requirements. Whatever happens, though...hopefully we'll see a nice mod for them come out. SHIV has a lot to build on, and looks to be the ultimate subsim game of all time. Pick any side, anytime, anywhere during the war. Go anywhere, do anything, choose any option. Until then, I'll just have to assume that the lifeboats were left in port I guess.....

Long Live Prussia!

Is there any news at all on anything about SH4.
Any links etc.

I have heard SH4 mentioned a lot on these forums, is it under development? whats the gist?

I like the idea of sailing anywhere, anytime for any side, sounds fantastico!http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v463/RedTerex/boucyblue.gif

With no lifeboats, it`s easier. You sink ships, not people. Just a game, I think it`s much better that way.

On the Poll thread I voted for non-shootable, but my thinking was a bit different: I reasoned that if a lifeboat could be shot (or aided), it would require a graphic showing the wrecked boat parts floating in the water, or a cut scene of some sort showing the U-boat crew giving the survivors supplies, and either one of those would indeed tie up resources. On the other hand, a non-shootable (i.e. non-real) lifeboat could be just part of the flotsam that they said would already be there. If there will be junk floating in the water after a sinking, there should be no problem turning some of it into boats (or modding them later).

What are those 'manning' the depth charges on those Destroyers? And just what do 'Troop Ships' carry? Got to have crew on EVERY ship to function. And the question I've been wondering. What about your crew(and yourself)if you have to 'ABANDON SHIP'?

This is something I've always found difficult to understand in subsims, the lack of lifeboats.Being a flightsimmer for years now, I've gotten quite used to the sight of pilots bailing out and dangling on their chutes. And yes they can be shot http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif. So the moral aspect really should be an non-issue.

But really, even without lifeboats, SH3 is still gonna rock. Big thumbs up to the devs http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif
