Guys,
I know this isn't the best place to be with a bf109 in a p51B but am wondering what is a good evasive strategy? I have been dropping down flaps and turning near stall speed and it works sometimes. What does the p51 have in this situation that will get him out of there to fight another day?

Thanks,
Todd

i think fb p51 has better roll rate than the bf 109 try rolling scissors.

dont try it against the 190 tho

A good wingman?

Seriously, That's not a good place to be and survivability is usually predicated on the experience of the 109 jockey...period.

P-51d or P-51b?

Which model 109?

All these things make a very large difference in what will or will not work, although pilot skill should, as usual, dictate who leaves the engagement alive.

Against early 109s in an balanced-advantage slow turning fight (why are you here in the first place?), dive/accelerate away and extend.. turning with them will only get you killed unless you have enough of an energy advantage to Yo-Yo or otherwise get on top of him in a dominant position.

At speeds from 200km/h up to 400km/h the Bf 109 can roll as fast as the Fw 190 in-game, ~180deg/sec. The P-51 is quite sluggish in the roll at these speeds, it gets much better at 450-500km/h. I'd suggest that if you have a 109 on your tail try to build your speed up in a dive, the P-51 in FB/AEP has much better control authority at high speed than any 109. The P-51 also turns very well at all speeds.

Oberleutnant Oskar-Walter Romm thoughts on his aircraft.

"I found the Fw 190D-9 to be greatly superior to those of my opponents. During dogfights at altitudes of between about 10,000 and 24,000ft, usual when meeting the Russians, I found that I could pull the D-9 into a tight turn and still retain my speed advantage. In the descent the Dora-9 picked up speed much more rapidly than the A type; in the dive it could leave the Russian Yak-3 and Yak-9 fighters standing."

Dive on the deck and throw on full power, once you hit 350 kph, pull hard left or right and try to extend. Open your radiator all the way. If the 109's a good shot, you're dead, but if you can maneuver in any way WITHOUT rudder, do so.

Not many chances for P-51 against 109 on the deck. Best thing is to extend away and avoid turnfight.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

If the BF pilot knows what he is doing, then you is dead.

The pilot will take advantge of the BF's stall speed in a slow turn fight.

Sure, you can drop to combat flaps, take off flaps, and even landing flaps. However, if he knows his plane, you'l lose.

Try to keep you'r speed higher than 500. Try pulling some hard manuevers at 600km/h TAS. This may help to lose him. If you go any faster, you might lose a wing.
