Dex did you do something to those screens? I could never get CFS3 to run so well lit. It always seemed dim and grungy...and blurry. LOL..Maybe it was my eyes!!!

No doctoring at all. They're actually 1% screenshots, the team that did those planes.

Funniest of all (and perhaps why I'm posting CFS3 pics in an FB forum) is that I get better performance with CFS3 and have higher visual settings in CFS3 all the way around.

CFS3 failed. Sure it has some nice aircraft 3rd party but with such crappy FM and lacklustre combat it feels false and for want of a better word crap so they are aircraft in looks only.

CFS3 is a cardboard cutout of something it espired to be but could just not pull off. Sure the DC is nice but then so is FB's.

However, the microsoft sea looks like something from a 1996 flight sim and the horizon at sunset is a bag of bolts. its a vast clipping mess with no haze and no real sense of work to add atmosphere. In fact it feels like they just rehashed MSFS2002 and repackaged it with a few extra bells and whistles.

Now each to their own but CFS3 is a POS in my house and I can say that after having no problems with frame rates or anything else. The game sucked big time and was confirmed the moment I got into my first dogfight.

Yuck to say the least. The disc now lies somewhere nearby, scratched and unplayable and I could not care less/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

CFS really does look sh!tty compared to FB. No matter how many times I try to convince myself It looks ok I always come to the conclusion that it's graphics are sub-par. I'm glad I didn't buy it.

I played FB for the first time (not screwing around on a dogfight server) and I tried to learn the P-47 cause it's my favorite a/c. After looking long and hard (and being fvcked with look at instruments view, where IL2 would look at instruments with down command FB looks down at your pants to see if your flies undone and you **** is flapping in the breeze, for why I don't have a friggin clue?!) for the RPM counter I finally found it, and I noticed it doesn't work. Um, CEM?? So I promptly turned off the game.

To each their own as you say SJ. However, the 1% flight models and all new planes (above) have dramatically changed the way dogfights work in that game.

FB is far more hard core and perfected, no question but I would no longer say CFS3 "failed", now that better planes have been released.

Anyways, I'm just peeved waiting for FB to get fixed and came here after a few good flights and wanted to share some of the planes that are there.

That makes NO sense. You concluded its graphics were sub-par SO you didn't buy it? Talk about a qualified review. You and RBJ should get together and review CFS3 and trackIR from the "non-user" perspective /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

FYI, the aircraft textures in CFS3 are far better than FB. The cockpits are much more useful than FB's where your view centers on the gunsight, thereby moving all gauges out of view.

Yadda yadda... Each of the two have their better features. FB has more for sure but sometimes playing the same !@#$ over and over again gets tired a break is needed. At least for me.

bit of a broad statement there !!

FB has no heavies no P38 lightning or mosquito and even the Spitfire is still a fair way off http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

but yeah .. if the only thing CFS3 has going for it is non eastern front aircraft it is slippin fast

I certainly respect what the 1% guys have done but it still did not work for me where as FB (unpatched) stunned me from the word "go."

You should not have to hunt down 3rd party updates to complete the game IMHO.

I still remember the first time I got into a dogfight in CFS3 it was just a case of throwing FM out of the window, swinging my sights ahead of the target and squeezing of a burst of what looked like oranges or tennis balls.
Instantly the enemy fighter fell apart. there was no damge or anything else. It just fell part. Granted the fireworks looked very nice but they also looked very overdone and unrealistic unless you have been brought up all your life in on Hollywood BS.

I use the word Failure purely in a personal context. I say failed because from the moment I heard of CFS3 I had high hopes that Microsoft would finaly pull it off this time. Its a massive company with massive resourses. There was no real reasons to think they would screw the customer again.... Wrong!

Nice pics Dex no getting away from that but those pics are spoiled (for me) only because the eye candy seems to be the main substance of that so called sim and that is just sad because with more work and more time in development CFS3 might just have made it.

Yeah I can dig that. With summer here I am in gardening mode myself and working on my website with the laptop.

Then there is the chilling in the shade tactic with the beer, watching my kids play.

Then off to the beach or the hills for some quallity time.

Dexmeister, the IMO bad graphics was only one of a multitude of reasons I didn't buy it. You might have noticed that it got less than stellar reviews from well, just about everyone. I've never said I based my decision of not buying CFS 3 purely on the visuals. You're right. THAT would be silly.

And about the cockpits, I usually fly the Fw and and all the gauges I really need are clearly visible in normal or wide view. No problem there, at least not for me. I'm not trying to flame those who like CFS 3.

CFS3 makes a great Screenshot program, but that's about it.

Never judge a book by it's cover...

IL2/FB has it's own short-comings, but overall it is a deeper SIM and keeps ya coming back for more fun.

I think the most frustrating thing about CFS series games.. is the fact that some many people spend endless hours tweaking, building, fixing, that they forgot why they started doing this Flight Sim thing for in the first place... To have FUN, and try to represent a relistic battle simulation.

What I have found with IL2/FB is that I write a mission, and even if I didn't do something correctly, it still works!!!! Sometimes the screwups are even more fun that the perfectly written missions!

Now I can fire off 5-6-7 missions in an hour or two, and our group can have fun for 3-4 hours!

Cheers Oleg celebrate... cheers Microsoft Drowned your sorrows...

(Note.. This is coming from a DieHard CFS1-CFS2 X-Junkie, I want CFS3 to be as good as they promised too, but it isn't)

I just picked up MSFS2002, mouslook may not be in there, but TrackIR certainly works.

To bad the cockpits are so damned ugly and have such wierd FOV. I finally figured out how to zoom out in the virtual cockpit.... the only way i could get it to look proper was to unzoom to the point that the pilots head was in the back seat. lol. I will say one thing positive about FS2002: I found my home town, may favorite lake, and the creek that my brother and I fished in as kids. I also flew over Ft. Knox without an escort /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif That was, well, very gratifying.

FB is golden. I've tried playing other sims, but I just can't get into them... including IL2!

"Soon FB will have all CFS3's best planes"

Could be the other way round...it's considerably easier to add new planes into CFS3. Whether they'll be as good in CFS remains to be seen.

Third-party add on planes will save CFS3 if anything will, personally I'd probably have given up on it if not for the 1% planes.

Meantime FB is miles better, and I chose it after recommendations on a CFS3 forum!

but then again cfs3 has a massive ammount of cheaters and fb does not http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The bomber is a B-26 Marauder. Just look at the tail and nose/cockpit.

Dex,

No CFS3 doesn't have mouselook and neither does FS2002. However, my older brother is a FS nut and downloads all kinds of utilities. He showed me one that allows you to use mouselook. If you could transfer that to CFS3, you might could even use TrackIR with CFS3 in mouse emulation mode.

I remember you gave me some tips on tweaking CFS3 on my old machine, a 1.2GHz with SDRAM and GF4 Ti4200. After I updated to 2.4 GHz, 1024MB 333MHz DDRRAM, and same vid card. It was still stuttery and I *had* to use reduced resolution, about 800x600. After the patch it finally worked smoothly enough to play, so I gave it a go. I never even flew all the planes, but I did have some fun with it.

I tried a campaign and was simulteously disappointed and charmed. I wasn't very impressed by the ship attack missions or their number, or how quickly the front lines moved. The role playing was a novelty. It was not reasonable to fly with icons or the radar off, though I didn't stay long enough to get used to things, and I agree with Smokes on the combat aspect, even though this doesn't ruin all the fun as a game. I think the thing that made it the most interesting for me was being able to be in the West, as it is my first Western Theatre sim. This great aspect is nearly spoiled by the tedious ground textures. Just look at the screenshot with the Bf-110. It just about ruins the fun of being able to fly around if you can't enjoy the sights (the clouds are a notable exception). The way ground objects contrast to the ground textures is hard to like. There is also seems little chance of having fun with navigation, unlike CFS2 and especially IL-2/FB. Had they added interaction with ground control, which would have been *very* appropriate for the period and theater, it would have greatly increased my fascination.

CFS3 with the patch has enough going for it to not make me sorry I bought it. That is without 3rd party add-ons. I still am disappointed because I anticipated it for what, 7 or 8 months and expected more.

I still look to IL-2 and FB for simulation and exciting combat, and regard CFS2 and CFS3 as fun games. I have more fun in CFS2 flying around, navigating, taking off and landing than I do combat. I started with CFS2 and it never forced me to learn much beyond stick-yanking. I got so frustrated with stalls and not being able to climb, because I didn't know how to fly. I flew with the hard flight model settings but never did wean myself off the enemy indicator and radar. When I started with IL-2, it *forced* me to learn how to fly, and going back to CFS2 months later showed me all that I had been doing wrong.

Cheers,
Mike

I like FS2002 Pro a lot, I find it's very useful to keep familiar with navigation aids, etc., for the portions of the year when I can't afford to fly for real. The detail is such that places familiar in the real world are fairly well represented (especially with all the freebie 3rd party scenery downloads). The flight models may be a bit bland but the environment itself is great, immersive.

Edit : And FS2002 DOES seem to work Ok with TrackIR - the naturalpoint drivers add a .dll to FS2002 on install (as an option) and it seems to work perfectly well with the virtual cockpits.

Unfortunately CFS3 doesn't have those other things going for it, and in a fighter sim you want good FMs above all else.

I bought it, and I really wanted it to be good. I wanted to fly the Mosquito and Spit. Having come off IL2, clearly expectations were high and I was sorely disappointed. I gave it a shot, but on high graphics settings and full realism it just feels lousy. It's got that whole plane-on-rails going on, it doesn't feel at all "live" in the places where it needs to - on the edge of the envelope, in the stall or spin, taxiing, takeoffs, etc. IL2 is a whole different world.

I gave it a week and then sold it on Ebay.

You can add eye candy add-ons indefinately but it's whats under the hood that counts.

Current TrackIR drivers are 2.01 final, MSFS2002 support has been in since version 1.22 I believe - watch for it during the install.

If you're updating existing drivers it MAY be best to uninstall the old ones first to ensure you get the full set of install options rather than just a refresh.

I forget where in the process it popped up but there's definitely a FS specific checkbox or something during the installation (you'll need to specify the FS directory, I think, so ensure this is installed before the trackIR drivers).

This enables you to run TrackIR in ENHANCED mode for FS virtual cockpits.

Well, how about this question? You can own either FB or CFS3 but not both. What is your choice?

FB for me...not contest.

Yeah, me too. I tried owning both but FB pistol-whipped the pretender out of town. Even if it did take my Mosquito with it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Go here, and scroll down till you see the mission that was created for FB. Make sure you look at the "compare and contrast" pics all the way at the bottom, and you'll know why I feel that the $100.00 I spent for two copies of CFS3 was nothing short of my being robbed! That's why I made that mission.
