If I plug an Xbox360 Controller in my Laptop to play IL-2 cliffs of dover will it work? or do i have to use a joy stick or key pad?

This can be useful for other PC games http://joy2key.soft32.com/ With MMO and FPS style games a gamepad can significantly reduce risk of RSI' compared to using keyboars input.

(IMO none of these console controller gamepads are as good as the sadly out of production Saitek P880)

Of course nothing can beat a HOTAS for control and immersion. I recently got a spare Cyborg for 5.00 GBP at a charity shop.
If you buy used check there is no slop in any of the axes and that cables are in good condition.

Cliffs of Dover really does benefit from having full HOTAS for engine management etc.
Currently using CH throttle quadrant (6 lever)
Saitek yoke and pedals and 3 lever throttle quadrant
Logitech Wingman2 - solely for extra throttle lever used for pitch trim

G510 keyboard with profile for bombardier commands/Bombsight table( a 3rd party app for calculating TAS from IAS etc)
