View Full Version : P-51 Explodes in dive

I've noticed on several occasions that in a dive a P-51 D will explode even though the speeds are under 500 mph. They are not hit by enemy fire, they just explode. Can Oleg respond to this or is it an issue for an upcoming patch?
Thank You Sirs.

Could be the LW's secret plane-destroying beam weapon, modeled in AEP but too secret to mention.

???? I've never exploded before, maybe flak? What are you doing when it explodes, how high are you or how low are you, and are there any flak batteries around.

Yep had it happen to me once in Pony at about 700-800kph; reviewed track, no flak no other a/c in vicinity other than a/c I was chasing 700 meters in front and there was absolutely no lag or collision, or errant fire: just blew up

Happened to me once. I was chased a 51 in a shallow dive - I passed a Yak going after him too. I began peppering him with the .50's, and suudenly - BANG - up in smoke. Lol, I shot him down just before I blew up. Hollow victory I guess they call that.

Several of our squad members have had 51's explode in dives when they pulled up. I've also had the P-40 explode when I lowered the gear at high speed. I think these are bugs.

i have noticed the same thing. But im not shure if it happens to all the P-51's.

I know the P-51D-20NA explodes at or around 840kmh. I havent tested the other mustangs yet though.

Prior to the addition of the fin to the vertical tail of the P-51 there were a number of Mustangs that exploded in mid-air during high g turns or in bad weather, on 79th. Ftr. Sqdn. pilot earned the nick "Lucky" for being the luckiest man alive when his P-51 simply exploded around him sending him (still strapped in his seat) into thin air. His chute somehow managed to open and he glided down to earth, seat and all. He received only minor injuries and was soon back in combat and completed his tour. Though it was orginally thought that his plane was struck by lightning it was later determined to be a design flaw and helped to bring about the necessary changes to the aircraft.

Is this since the addition of AEP? I dive tested the D5 and the plane started to come apart at around 1100. Havent tested it or the D20 since AEP tho.

Here's your answer:

"Several of our squad members have had 51's explode in dives when they pulled up."

When you pull up too-too hard in the 51 you will explode. When you really get trucking you have to be even more slight and deliberate.. Instead, use your trim and baby the stick... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yes N20 explodes when you dive. Bums me out. Shallow dive is all you can do till they fix it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yes I have experienced it too..

I think it is just with the 20NA variant..

the new one with the K-14 gunsight..

It happens on steep dives if one has to much speed and pulls back on the stick the plane simply explodes..

It may be a real limitation of this type of P-51 variant or a bug..

I never noticed this with the previously released variant..

I have noticed this on the HE-162 as well, although with this aircraft I believe this was a real occurence due to flaws in the design of the plane..

I was not aware that the Mustang had such a serious flaw in its airframe.

I just ran a test with all the P-51's. At 800kmh IAS they will explode if you pull back on the stick lol.

YES! This is true it has happend to me twice now. It reminds me of the AI version of the Mustang. For some reason this bug made it way into the expansion. (And is not accurate...Oleg even stated that when people questioned the AI version.) I seriously hope this is corrected in the next patch.

Didn't this happen to the P-40 back before the patches? And didn't this get fixed? Why wouldn't it be fixed this time around?

>>K

Yes and it was fixed. To avoid it put your pitch all the way down in a power dive.. the engine wont overrev. Still be carefull on the pull out though... too hard and the engine will break loose from its mounts..... keep the rcovery shallow and you should survive.. I do it all the time.

It never happened to me. I guess I don't pull hard enough on the stick

I haven't exploded one...but high speed dives in Mustangs are a bit scarry as I worry about breaking the wings. Even so, I haven't done so in 6 months.

Its like the pilots said...the Mustang dove faster but with a Thunderbolt you always knew you were going to pull out at the bottom.

the P-40 used to detonate as soon as 500 kmh was reached.

Made it fun to fly . . .

Because American fighters are so good at diving you have to make them explode to make if fair.

Perhaps the speed must be under 1200kph..

Just kidding. LOL.
