Fastest plane...hmmm

Well as far as props go (I agree with the BI-1 and 262 posted in previous thread) in level flight I think it's probably the FW 190 Dora, and maybe the La 7?

Down low the La-7 and Fw 190D-9 ´45 are the fastest prop planes in FB. At alt I think the D-9 '44 is the fastest with 715-720km/h TAS at 5500m. In RL the D-9 '44 would have been faster than the D-9 '45 down low aswell.

Was that IAS or TAS? And was it in a dive. It's kind of hard to believe that his machine was 40km/h faster than other La-7's. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

TA152 will be fastest prop when it arrives... DO335 would be even better... but not getting it...

but right now, i would have to say LA7 and a D series, although i think the yak3, 51s, and k4 are fast as well...

"So when Diogenes perceived that he was greatly excited and quite keyed up in mind with expectancy, he toyed with him and pulled him about in the hope that somehow he might be moved from his pride and thirst for glory and be able to sober up a little. For he noticed that at one time he was delighted, and at another grieved at the same thing, and that his soul was as unsettled as the weather at the solstices when both rain and sunshine come from the very same source."

I'll show you witch ones.
TOAD and I have been doing some speed records tests. I've try all the planes and none of them comes close to the Me-262 and the good old P47. The test consist of going the fastest as possible with out breaking anything and still controllable and precise.
I'm so Proud of the P47, this plane is in many times forgotten for his very good quality.

So i'm calling out the Hardcores pilots to do their own tests and post their tracks here to share this experiences that i think is challenging and a great fun.
It is easy to go fast but trying to stay safe at high speed it's an other story

Check this out and give it a try.
Here are the 2 tracks (http://www.french.themotorhead.com/themotorhead_fighters//showthread.php?s=11b5b69a7a8bfae270cf7251b4482cba&postid=726#post726)

Also TOAD's track in page 1 ( fantastic pilot )

The Mustang was not the premire high alt fighter for the US. It was the purpose built P-47. The biggest advantage of the Mustang over the Jug was range. Otherwise, the Jug had more firepower and higher speed at high altitude. Top speed of the P-47N (official) is 467 mph. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Ok, so we're talking max diving speeds here! Then the Jug and 262 are the fastest, with the Bf 109, Fw 190A/D, P-51 close enough behind.

Hey Cajun,

Remember though, the N's contemporary was the P-51H at 487 mph, not the P-51D. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Also, no P-47D model could do the 435 to 440 mph (or 450 according to the USN) at 29,000 ft that the P-51B could do. Above 30,000 might be another matter though!

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif I know about the P-51H. I was talking about a/c that saw combat. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif And I didn't even mention the P-47M, which was faster and better climbing than the P-47N. They also saw combat. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Officially the P-47M went 470 mph. Common tweaking and overboosting techniques used in the field could get 15-20 mph more.

In my first post in the thread, I mentioned that no other prop fighter in the game can seem to catch a Jug at 10,000m. So my post responding to the high altitude capabilities of the Mustang might better be explained.

My main point in all this is to debunk the myth that the Jug couldn't compete with other a/c. It always seems overlooked. The Mustang is the glory boy, but it was the workhorse P-47 that helped the US and Allies win the air war.

One last thing,

"Also, no P-47D model could do the 435 to 440 mph (or 450 according to the USN) at 29,000 ft that the P-51B could do."

I really need to get "Thunderbolt." There may be a quote on the web somewhere, but Robert S. Johnson believed he had a Jug that could do at least that (440mph), if not more. His claim may be exaggerated, but there was no doubt he had a fast ship. He insisted on flying Razorbacks, because they were faster. Mebbe someone has the quote handy?

Hey Cajun,

I fully agree with your views on the T'bolt.

I think that Johnson's Razorback was running at 72' WEP (or more) and since the R-2800's critical altitude was so high, it very well could have done 440 way up there.

Also, I think johnson's tour ended in May '44 so I don't think he ever had the option of flying the Bubbletop while with the 56th.

You're right, Irrp. Johnson did leave in May of '44. The first BubbleTops started arriving at the same time. I think I was remembering an account when one of Johnson's first hotrods was crashed by another pilot. When it referred to his new ride, it gave me the impression that another version was availible, but not chosen.
