I found this while researching the P-61's radar. I thought it was an interesting read.

quote:
We had 450 rounds of ammunition and used them all. By the time the gleaming bomber had steepened its turn and started to spiral toward the ocean, we were on the edge of defeat, whipped and disgraced. In full view of 10,000 men on Iwo, an empty ship had all but beaten us. We had never heard of an aircraft absorbing such punishment.

That proves that bombers are overmodeled!!

And the P-61 won the war!

That was a good read. Thanks. Now, there you have a remarkable and fairly detailed description of how tough those B-29's really were. Seems that flak was really its true nemesis in 1945.

In WWII the USAAF lost more aircraft to ground defensive fire than to enemy fighters.
that's a fact.

Good reading that story agin. I found it awhile back while reserching the P-61 for Plane Eater....who is doing the blackwidow for FB.

I'd love to help out with the radar interpretation. Hell, I'd do it for any plane, really.
