I have owned both il-2 and FB for a while now and just noticed something weird. Sometimes when my plane is hit by gunfire the screen goes black. What causes this? Is it because the player is dead? Most of the time nothing happens to the screen when I die. It only happens occasionaly and stops as soon as I press escape. This only happens in FB.

Yes, Black screen = Dead pilot.

You can still see with externals if they are enabled.

This feature wasnt in Il-2.

I was flying the Out-of-the-box FW190 mission (which is to intercept a bunch of B-17s). I got killed while I was firing. I could hear the guns firing still. I switched to externals and I was going down all guns blazing, until the ammo ran out.

Guys it's a screen refrsh issue. It happens occasionally when playing. IT IS NOT THE SAME as dying (red first then balck out). This happnens to me when I attack and the explosion from the eneymy plane is immenant!

You'll go instantly black if your pilot is hit in a critical area - not red to black.

Notice that when you are on external view, none of the controls work after the "blackout." No throttle, no control, nothing.

I had a plane flying along perfectly level and fine -- with me dead. The engine started to overheat before I turned it off.

Playing the Finnish campaign I got nailed in my Hurri instant black, switched to externals to look at the damage.

Plane flew along nice and level at 800 meters.Had it not been for a fuel leak hard to say where it would have ended. It was headed for Leningrad but ran dry after 13 minutes. Which oddly enough is almost exactly how long it takes me to make a ham & swiss, eat it, drink a pepsi, check the speed channel for FIA updates and canned air dust the keyboard.

..............................
I always have just enough fuel to arrive at the scene of my crash.

Usually when I eat it--I get killed--my plane goes into a flat spin with the trigger depressed. The guns fire till they run out of ammo, and the plane just spirals into the ground. In the cockpit the canopy is usually full of bullet holes with oil sprayed over the windscreen. Once, the aiming reticule was knocked askew by a hit through the windscreen. That surprised me--very cool: but I was dead a moment later. The detail in this game is unbelievable.

I got nailed once in an IL-2 but the controls froze
at death and left the plane in a very stable circle.
I died at 1500m and VERY slowly clircled my way down to 800m,
and waited and waited but it kept on circling for something
like 40-50 minutes. I saved a track of it, good to have when

The intersting thing about the black screen is that I don't get it everytime I die. Sometimes I can can still see the cockpit when the pilot is dead.

Sorry, man. I have to disagree. IL2 AEP apparently models several degrees of pilot death:

- Instant death = instant black screen.
- Near instant death = red screen, then black.
- Slow death = red-tinted screen for a while, then fades to black.
- Wounded pilot = red-tinted screen.

I've experienced all of the above. Screen refresh has nothing to do with it.
