Hi all,
I have always read about the bomber 'box formation' and 'coverage.overlap' of fire and I wanted to test it and go against them.

I have been trying to improve my skills as well by going 'solo' against 4 B-17s and in more cases I am only able to bring down 2 if not just 1 and then I get either oil or fuel problems. The only planes that I could survive and kill em all are the uber Komet Me-162 and Go 229 along with the Il-2s and the BF-109Z. I tried the FW-190s/Ta-152's with limited success even with B&Z approach.

I also tried using the Yak-9s and the LA'5s and yup only 1 or 2 since they always could shot either oil or fuel lines. Anybody try to do this? I didnt think it would that hard to bring down B-17's since there were lots of bomber loses with the Mighty 8th's.

if a bomber was hard to bring down in europe in ww2, it would be the B17 G, the version which we have in the game.
so i guess you have to be happy, if you get 2 bombers without serious damage for you and your plane.

The first Time i saw Chuck Yeager, i shot him down. Petrosillius Zwacklmann ( WW2 Hero ).

Somebody asked me, what i liked most, my chromium-plated Colt or my Helmet with the 4 Stars. I said : you damn Bastard, none of them, the most important thing in my life is my pink underwear.....a well know WW2 General http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably worse to the Uhu Segelflieger aus Balsaholz. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an Uhu Balsaholzflieger pilot whose plane I failed to down.

hmm actually I am not this is why I asked here to see how others fare in this exercise. Those AI bombers seems to be able to hit me quickly even at upper 480-510 speed on the BF-109's/La-s and only the Komet/GO 229's the AI bombers cannot hit that well. I also tried the He 162 with limited sucess.

try the me-262 with that huge 50mm gun. one shot is enough to destroy a b-17, if you aim fine you can shoot down an entire formation in 3-4 passes firing 4-8 rounds. that thing rules!

Sounds about right to me.

In RL there would have been several Schwarms going into the bomber stream...

Try the FW-190 A-9 with MK-108 cannons. It's also a matter of tactics. Here (http://home.arcor.de/rayluck/sturmovik/030401-FB20-2-FW190A9-8B17-8kills.zip) is a track for FB/AEP 2.0 where I shot down 8 average B-17s. I was getting too careless in the second half and had to glide back to my base.

Just tried it against 4 Ace B-17s in the QMB, shot them all down and got only slightly damaged myself.

Believe it or not, I can shoot down one or two ace B-17s with a 109F2!!! The DM of the 17's engines
is fairly light weight compared to the PE-8, so downing them is not really much to brag about. They should toughen up the B-17 DM some, IMHO. I can only take out ( or only severely damage ) one PE-8 in a 109F2. But if you can down a 17 in a under-armed F2, you can do it in any plane.

I guess more important than a good pass is a big gun, at least against these 'flying fortresses' (as its name sais). there are at least four 12,7mm guns on each bomber that can track you from any direction so going into a formation is almost suicide.
Anyhow best attack angle is from high above - you are hard to hit because you're fast but you'll need some practice to get in good shots.

If you manage to hit the wings from above or below angle two 20mm guns should be enough to set a fuel tank on fire in a single pass.
when attacking from behind you'll need either A LOT of 20mm's or some bigger gun.

I found the 30mm MK103 to be very effective. It's the standard gun on the Go229 and can be taken as a loadout on the FW-190A-8/9. This gun can easily bring down a B-17 from about 1000m distance (outside the range of the defensive gunners). MK108 is less effective and you need to get in closer.
For some reason i never hit anything with the soviet 37mm gun but it does a pretty punch.

One of my most favourite B-17 killers is the Bf-110 with additional MK108 and MG151/20 Ruestsatz. I open fire with the MG151/20 at about 600-800m and use MK108 at less than 500m.
Me262, Go229 and Fw190As are good, too.
I have low success with other planes mainly because of engine damage.

In reality....B-17 box formations were attacked by groups of FW190's armed with gunpods of some sort (MK108, MK103, MG151/20 pods) or rockets and they were attacked by groups of thirty fighters. Either that or they waited for flak to damage a few of them and pick on those that fell out of formation.

So a single fighter, BNZ, or straight in...is going to loose every time.

Ok thanks for the replies. I will fly with the suggested armaments for the FW-190.

I also was beginning to doubt it was my flying although I am not as good as the others yet but it is good to know my experience is not far off.

It does give me new respect for the Mighty Eights...S!
