None of the above. I fly the P-38, P-40 and P-47 because I like their performance and they're amoung my favorite planes.

None of the above. I fly the P-47 because ever since I was 9 years old and got to sit in one and hang around a restoration I have been in love with the old beast. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Other than that I just like the performace of the US aircraft and their looks.

Besides, the P-51 won the war.

I think the P/47, P-51, P-38 are very cool. But the P-51 is sweet and it's a very sexy plane. I think i just might marry her. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

I fly axis planes because they are better. They had good weaponry, were fast and easy to control. Not to mention they usually can outrun allied planes. And why dou u all say the p-51 is so good? It wasn't the best plane in the war u know. It had its flaws just like all other planes did. All the planes of the allies won the war, not just the P-51.

Nobody in this thread posted that the Mustang won the war (well, ok, Buzz is being Devil's Advocate http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ) or was the best plane, although as an all around machine, it does rate as a contender for the title "best". The same could be said for other aircraft as well, but surely you realise that a fighter aircraft that had the range to escort bombers 1,000 miles and still had sufficient manueverability and speed to battle enemy bomber interceptors on equal terms was a significant aircraft.

I would not say that the P-51 was the "best" at any one category, but as an all around fighter, it could certainly be described as a contender for the title "best". Don't confuse "best" with "did *everything better* than any other aircraft" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

No US fighter won the war, by the way. The most important US aircraft in WWII was the C-47. It allowed our Industrial Might to get used.

I hope you are just kidding. First off, John Wayne never fought in a war, not any one war. He just made movies about wars. Second, the P-51 didn't win the war. The P-51 entered the war 4 years into the conflict (that being for countries who fought the war from start to finish, 1939 to 1945 eg Britian, Canada, Germany, Austria, Romania, Austrailia etc.). By then the war had dragged on and many men had died. The P-51 is glorified too much. It had flaws, like for example, usually one bullet hit in the engin caused a fire which consumed the plane. This is the reasion for many USAAF mustang pilots deaths, by being burned alive in a flaming toumb. Also, the P-51 was good for escorting bombers long distances, but was ineffective against ground targes because its half inch guns couldn't pierce tank armour. The british typhoons and tempests and the russians Il-2, Il-3, Il-10, etc could pierce tank armour with there 20mm cannons and they did the majority of the damage to ground targets, thus allowing our troops to advance and win the war. Also you must not push aside planes like the spitfire, P-40, P-47 and others. It shows arrogance to say one plane won the war. The P-51 is just another plane that flew in WWII along with thousands of other planes.

The P-47 won the war, the P-51 just mopped up what was left and then upstaged the Jug. Classic Daffy Duck move if you ask me.....

Why do I like Alled planes? I like a well rounded a/c, able to perform a varitey of jobs well. Take the Jug. Known as a great ground-pounder, yet the same plane could perform at altitudes that left the enemy gasping for breath. You don't need endless special variants to do differant jobs. To me, this is one of the great strengths of Allied design, especialy American. One plane, performing multiple roles is a force multiplier. Heck, you can win wars this way.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Look, no single plane won the war OK. Each plane contributed the the voctory of the allied forces. Yes some contributed more than others and thats why they're remembered, but no single plane finished the war off.

No, you're wrong. Those movies John Wayne made were real stories. He was playing himself in the movies. He always flew a P-51, and always won. The P-51 won the war, and of course, so did John Wayne. It's true.

I'm not assuming anything. I just had a better knowledge than most people. My father is a history teacher, and as i grew up i learned much about history. It has been my favort topic and i love reading about it. Really, i dont have to study history to remember facts, i just have to read over it once and it sticks. Now if only math and science were that easy.

Because my first model plane was a F-86... the second was a P-51.. the third was a P-47. I have been into warbirds since I was about 8 or 9 and my dad brought home some aitlplane books. There was one book on aces and planes of WW1, a book on the B-17,P-51,P-47,Spitfire,DC-3 and Me-109. From the very first moment I saw one I thought the P-51D was the most beatiful plane I had ever seen. I still do....
