The BOB campaign, after so many years, remains one of the most immersive single player flight experience, IMO. For the many of you (me included) eagerly waiting for Oleg's next flight-sim, try this game that had BOB done right.

Oh, the name is European Air War by Microprose for those who don't already know. Out for 5 years and still great.

Yeah, it's great.

I tried to get it to run on my home computer, an Athlon 2000+ laptop, but I keep getting that dreaded "error 7217", that I can't seem to fix. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Yea, I was as addicted to EAW as I am now to FB. It still does a great job of immersiveness, chucks loads of aeroplanes in the air and the wingman AI are pretty good (as good as FB`s I would say).

The missing siren sound sound over the airfield annoyed me and of course it`s hard to get used to the graphics after FB, but it`s still great! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

It's just that once've been "spoiled" with FB gfx - it's hard to go back to an earlier game - but yes - it was great back then - I liked the atmosphere. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif It's the same with RB3D - I installed again it a year ago just to see how it was - but I just couldn't live with the gfx level... Sad.

Well, I was getting the run around. First I was told that only Starshoy could do it. Then Starshoy said that only Oleg could do it. I was being sent back and forth like an idiot with noone wanting to take responsibility for my simple request. It was put him off by messing him around... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Then I had a heavy dose of work.

I mean should it be this hard? I`m not asking for complicated FMs, just a chance to escape like in EAW...

I haven`t given it up, but I get the feeling that Oleg simply will not incorporate the `possibility of escape`.

I`ve sent him a private letter.... maybe that`ll work....

maybe...

p.s. hmm, actually, you`ve given me an idea.... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Posted by RAF_Black Adder on the SimHQ EAW forum.

You guys have been away from EAW for TOO long.

The 1.2c patch fixed the Dumb AI.

All the campaigns you want are available in Hi res quality.

Don't think EAW is what it was. It WAS crap.
Over the last 5 years though, it has improved no end, with thousands of upgrades.

You want Desert war 1942, the Med, Italians, Tomahawks, Folgores, FIATs etc? Look here, all in hi res, campaigns, maps, planes, infantry, the lot.

EAW Hi Res Campaign additions.

Campaigns

New sounds, corrected language radio chats etc.

Take a look here, I think you'll be surprised at how good it has become.

I admit Il2 Fb is of a new generation as far as graphics go, but still, take a look. That's why the EAW community is still as big and as ardent as ever.

If you ever owned this game, re install it, and see what I mean.

HiRes North Africa, Aegean and Mediterranean.

Includes convoy bombing, maps, skies, terraine, troops, Desert Cam vehicles, all relevant planes etc. IT's all there, in one simple install.

MiloMorai,

I use a Saitek X-45 and CH USB Pro-Pedals. I have EAW but have never been successful flying it because I have trouble with my control inputs. I know it doesn't support two devices. If I just unplug my pedals will it work? Is there anyway to use pedals without going to all CH products and using their control software?

Finally, do you really ride that radical looking bike? Looks great but it must be a trip going around a curve.

i always hated the empty enemy bases, No planes on the ramp. I longed for the airfield being attacked missions like in the aces series. It was too easy to wasted an entire tank conoy w/ just guns, even heavy tanks. other than that it was a grat game. I really hope they do come out w/ Version 2

Give Emil's BoB a try.

Then try this:

Take your Me262
Jazz the throttle as much as you want.
Line up on those bombers, fire your R4Ms
Enjoy the lockup.

Ever since i hooked up my Throttle for FB i can get either the Joystick or the Throttle to work for EAW, Shame though EAW was a blast to play, Especially with all the Mods & upgrades available, Still a great game.

I've got a lot of respect for the EAW.

Frankly, it doesn't do that much for me. Not because it's a bad sim, it's just that mission building is practically non-existent. The sim was definitely a front runner when it came out, but IL2 made it a non-consideration for any Combat Flight Sim enthusiast with a penchant for accuracy and history.

It is great EAW has all the theatres to enjoy the sim. It's just that different war theatres aren't what really makes a great Combat FLight Simulator (to me). The EAW has a campaign generator, which is pretty lame, and overall the EAW just lacks the class it really needs to make it viable.

The FM and DM are poor as compared to IL2-FB, and the graphics aren't even close.

I've got Rowan's BOB and with the new updates/add-ons it is much better than EAW. The BOB has the best of all campaign generators, which I hate, but still the best.

My take on this...I've found that the ability to choose theatres is not that big a plus when the sim is just not up to the IL2-FB in just about all respects. Since I don't have a lot of time to enjoy Combat Flight Simming (CFS) I've just decided I'm better off to stay with the IL2-FB.

The mission builder in Jane's WW2F (5+ year old sim) is the best for getting the most out of any WW2 Prop sim. The flight models and AI are better than the EAW (my opinion) as well.

What I'd give for a Full Mission Builder (FMB) in IL2-FB with the toolkit to build missions equal to the Jane's WW2 Fighters. I think I could build missions for months on end, reading my history as I go duplicating all those great combat scenarios. The IL-2FB community of users would see and enjoy a whole new Combat FLight Simulator, if Mission builders could really do their stuff.

Mission building is just an awesome way to enjoy IL2-FB. I really get off on building and re-playing the historical missions as possible. Frequently, I click on Chase views and just let the missions run on Autopilot. When the mission is taking place in the same places with the same aircraft, and circumstances which are as similar to historical as you can make them it really makes history come to life (so to say).

WW2 was truly a world war, and I don't think any theatre was dull by any stretch of the imagination. I've been building missions in the Kuban, Spring-Summer 1942 for over three months. Think about that...I mean the possibilities with all the maps and aircraft available are just amazing. I don't need more maps, more aircraft just give me a mission builder that let's me implement the fantastic array of aircraft, objects, terrains and scenery into missions.

I see tremendous possibilities for getting so much more excitement and immersion out of the IL2-FB with a more excellent set of programmable logic tools in the FMB.

I'll grant you...the BOB and EAW allows for huge numbers of planes in the air simultaneously. Ok, so you're able to get shot at by a couple hundred aircraft at once. The fact is most real life WW2 pilots rarely encountered a dogfight (real world) very often. Ground Support and targeting, transport, ferrying, escort, reconnaisance, rescue, overhead cap duties were a mainstay of the missions flown throughout the war almost altogether. There were large numbers of pilots flying fighter aircraft, and some were never in a dogfight, and some only a very few at most. There were some that had a lot of DF, but I'm almost persuaded that many jumped into air combat unhesitatingly...when it might have been possible to evade.

The possibilities for great Missions are within the IL2-FB like no other Combat Flight Simulator before or now. If you're beginning to get bored, looking for the always coming new aircraft...think about getting some reliable historical books on WW2 and build some missions with a realistic flavor. You'll be amazed how your interest will revitalize in the IL2-FB.
