Does anyone fly the IAR 81? Is there a site for mediocre planes where this one might fit in?

i find the IAR 80 to be quite a good little dogfighter, against other 1940 aircraft... faster than a hurricane, fairly tough, more manoeverable than most fighters... armament is a bit weak admittedly, but aim well and it is sufficient.

The 81 is my plane of choice--if offered on a server at HL, I'll fly it. The problem is finding that server.

Just a note: The armament and bomb load are not modelled correctly, but Oleg promised to fix this problem in the next patch. Furthermore, the two 20mm MG 151/20 version, the 81c (not the 81a), was not available until 1942 or '43; I'm not sure if Oleg is going to remedy this historical mix-up or not. I'm also hoping a little bit more work will done on the plane's exterior: unlike the Hurri, the IAR's rearview mirror isn't visible, nor is the 81's gunsight.

I've flown it a few times...its a fun plane to be in. Very stable and forgiving.

Well, I have fond it to be little more than a flying target...Although it is marginally effective agianst biplanes if you use energy tactics...

against a 109E4, you'll end up with a dead IAR 81. Just a few well placed 20mm shells from the E4 will turn the 81 into a flaming chunk of metal. I do like the look of it though - sort of looks like a D9.

Yeah a few weeks ago we tried to organize a 1940 and earlier server. But it seems to be well supported in thought, but no one shows up to the matches, or those interested are in different time zones and unable to easily hook up.
BUT, the few times I hosted a "crap plane" server the few that did show up had a serious blast.
The TB3 is one hell of a warship when what goes up against it are pre '40 plane sets.
Dusk winter map, searchlites, 20mm Russian truck mounted AA, cable tethered AA balloons, it was a blast.
The IAR80, as noted, is the poor mans fockewulf.
The 81 has 20mm cannons and carries bombs, its a pisser!
Wish someone would have a dedicated server for such excellent, historic important planes.
Or at least a map that would revolve with historic maps from 36-40.

And to those who think its worthless, I flew in tandem last night on TS with another IAR pilot and we did some serious damage. Those have nearly an unlimited supply of machine gun rounds- its like any "lesser" plane, fly to its strengths. I wouldn't grab one in an open map and 44 planes certainly. But in the online island map those valleys afforded the stealth needed to waylay those on the way back to, or taking off from their base!!
