With which software program can I open the sound archives e.g. fbsounds_SFS? My goal is to try to change the sounds of the aircrafts.

Can be this be done?

It's impossible to decypher the sfs files and change their content.

hmmm...

i wonder if replacing fb_sound.sfs with the sound.sfs from the original il2 will make any difference.

probably not, but will let you know.

p.s. i think its this haphazzard file messing that leads to me reinstalling windows every 2 or 3 weeks.

It's reallt a shame that we cannot get inside the sound SFS files. I wanted to put my Merlin Engine sounds for the Spitfire!

adding original engine sounds to FB should be the primary task for the developer, not for the user http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Not impossible. Just mathematically "hard".

Even if you succeed in altering the SFS files you will not be able to play online.

Every crypted file can be decrypted, but we don't know how long crypting key Oleg's programmers use, and finding it out by brute force can take very long time (months at the very least). So saying it is impossible is not the exact truth but there's no one capable of or willing to devote so much time to the task. If there was, there would already be mods at least for the offline play.

cfs2 had files around on the web to replace stock (read: lame) engine sounds. some1 managed to record actual engines of corsair, p-38, the radial engine for the zero's and they sounded much better. especially the corsair sounds; even had the sound the corsair made when the plane started getting over 190 knots and would increase in volume with speed. some1 also made the actual 50 caliber gun sound....and that was a biiig improvement. too bad u cant do that in fb, there's alot of sounds that could use changing. not just engines, guns also. seems some of the 109's cannons almost sound like ur fryin bacon LOL http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/354.gif

I thought this had already been done? A guy posted here about 3 months ago saying he had de- crypted code relating to the flight model and gave all sorts of details as to what it included (a parameter for 'rain blown under the engine cowling' being one of the more remarkable). He later politely requested Oleg's permission to release a utility for removing icons from tracks based on his decoding work- without any response, I believe.
