.125" wall aluminum box at 1"x1"x48 inches, assuming the weight is at center.

How about 1.5" x 1.5" x 48" pine?

Where does one find this kind of information?

This has to do with my cockpit. Thanks in advance.

Best I can tell you is go online or to your local library and look into a book called Statics, Strengths and Materials. I had this book when I was taking Engineering in College and I'm Pretty sure it will give you the Info you seek. On the down side, you better be pretty good at math, because you'll have to use advanded calculus and trig to figure it out, but it should supply you with the equasion or formula. Or you could just call the engineering department of the closet college near you and as them, they might be nice enough to figure it out. Hope that helps you some.

I'm guessing the aluminum, although much more expensive, will give better strength to wieght.

The problem is: I don't know how much strength it has compared to a good old, knot-free pine 2x2.
