As we all know, Assassin's wear hoods, but why, here are some reasons the player characters might wear them!

Altair - He may get confused for a scholar

Ezio AC2 - If the colour was brown, a monk maybe?

Ezio ACB - Same, or the red robed guys?

Ezio ACR - Absolutely no idea why he would!

Connor - Don't know if hooded people were around in the 1700, so please enlighten!

Desmond - Hoodies are more or less a common piece of clothing now, so he could be mistaken for a normal person!

Please feel free to put your own reasons or add to these!

yeah i dont know, i dont really think there is a "good" reason anymore, but it is iconic to the assassins in general, there for its probably just because it looks cool. Plus could you imagine what it would be like if Connor didn't have the hood! Good god would people be pissed

Hoods have been common pieces of clothing for millennia, especially for travelers.

Because Zelda is Robin Hood in disguise and Jedis have self-esteem issues.

^This.

How about so they can't be recognised by face when "off duty"? Also in the earlier times, not being able to see the eyes likely contributed to people thinking Assassin's were supernatural (therefore they were feared more)

frogger504

I believe that the Roman Attire was just a sign of nobility. By ACB the Assassins had a strong presence and they could walk with pride in their Noble Assassin Attire.

As for ACR/in general, well the hoods aren't just for pretending to be someone else, they help keep you hidden, makes you more conspicuous and hides your face. It's much harder to see a person in the dark when they have a hood on, particularly grey, than when their entire head is sticking out. Peeking around corners would also be easier, if they look at the corner they will just see a piece of cloth and not think much of it and look away. If they see a face they see that someone is watching them.

We don't know much about AC3 so until we see what we are dealing with all I can say is that it'd be useful for keeping his head warm in the Winter while in the Frontier. He was said to be able to freeze to death if you didn't prepare for it (which I assume is the fur cape). So yeah.

This.

I wear a hood mainly to keep the sun out of my eyes. Or to keep my head warm.

So other Assassins can easily spot them. That's probably at least one reason. Also, they're cool to wear.

freddie_1897
03-20-2012, 09:30 PM
yeah, they really help, i mean, what if he got skin cancer or something?
but seriously, they keep you warm in winter, and cool in summer, plus they kep the sun off his eyes, the rain from his head, and it helps hide his face.

I also think of it as helping them blend in when in other disguises. Also, you're less likely to remember someone if you couldn't see their face. Each Assassin outfit is in the style of the time/location, and wearing a hood is normal in almost every culture.

I think that has more to do with your choice of games than with games in general. There are more than enough games that are not set in the US. In fact, I can proudly say that over 90% of the games I own is not set in the US.

i'm not entirely sure what you're getting at, dude... but if you're looking to troll, you can take it somewhere else. connor's not a superhero, and the previous AC games had the same concept of the main character beating everyone else... and they weren't american. so what's your point?

Well, Connor isn't your traditional American, being half-Mohawk.
And you don't know if Connor won't face hard battles and almost loose.

And to Widow, yes I've always assumed that somehow the hoods were 'locked in place' but seemed to be untrue when I saw Ezio put his hood on in the ACR CGI trailer. It acts as regular fabric there.

Could his hood perhaps be made out of a special type of fabric or designed a special way?

I've always wondered about that with the beaks. No one I know can wear a hood like that.

Also, has anyone ever taken the time to look at Altair's hood? Even in ACR, the hood was much higher than his head should be. It's like his forehead is two feet long.

Epsilonyx
03-21-2012, 05:51 AM
The beaks of their hoods are made of a special fabric of which they can see through. The hoods are for concealing one's face, and lets be honest - if Ubi removed the iconic hood from ACIII can you imagine how much nerd-rage there would be?
Also, to you children out there disappointed by the new setting: The past four games have been set in Europe and the Middle-East. And its 18th century America, a setting hardly ever used in games.

Calvarok
03-21-2012, 06:01 AM
I think the hoods stay down because the beak is weighted differently than the rest of it, holding it in place.

All I'm saying is that it seems stupid, in ACB it made sense (nobility, etc) and so did AC1, but if most assassin's wear hoods, what's stopping the citizens from going, "A man wearing a hood, ASSASSIN!" and such? It just seems Desmond and Altair have the upper hand!

The unrealistic bit is that almost no other citizens seem to wear hoods (while they should).

Dear OP

In terms of Connor the Devs have researched the 1700s and turns out that wild nature hunters used to wear coats with hoods on the so that when hunting during snow season they would camouflage and not be seen by deers and thier prey. They took this concept and used Connors outfit.

for more information please check the Assassins Creed 3 Devs Diaries :)

hope this answered your Question

Part of what makes wonder why Desmond's hood is not peaked is due to marketing, Ubisoft wanted to market thiervclothesvwear by using in game titles.

Reason why Ubisoft shop clothing doesn't have peaked hoods, cause its cheaper to produce un peaked hoods.

reference: Assassins Creed 2 lineage production team never produced Giovanis Robe in the motion picture with peak for cost bubudget

I think only the truly bad *** assassin's wear hood's to show they're allegiance to the Assassin's. And only they wear hood's because it's so easy for them to blend with the crowd that wearing a iconic hood adds insult to injury in a sense. The trainees can wear a hood, but aren't limited to them and can wear disguises.
