Anyone know if the PV-1 bomber was used in the pacific? I saw a documentary on it being used from a isle call Attu or Atta or something to raid japanese islands to divert their attention from a strike somewhere else.

Annyone know if it was used apart from that island? and intensivly? looks cool http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The first PV-1 squadron into combat was VP-135, which was deployed to the Aleutians in April of 1943. In this theatre, they were subsequently operated by VP-131, VP-136, and VP-139. They flew maritime reconnaissance patrols and carried out strikes against Paramushiro, one of the northernmost Japanese islands in the Kurile chain. Since the PV-1 was radar-equipped, PV-1s would often act as leaders for USAAF B-24 bomber formations. PV-1s were deployed to the Solomons during the autumn of 1943. A detachment from VB-145 operated antisubmarine patrols out of bases in Brazil.

On the second day after its arrival at Tarawa, the Squadron started its campaign to neutralize the Japanese air bases in the Marshall Islands. The targets were on the atolls of Milli, Maloelap, Wotje, Kwajalein and Jaluit, which ranged from 300 to 800 miles north of Tarawa and on Nauru and Ocean (Banaba) Islands, southwest of Tarawa. According to official records, the 15 planes of VB-142 conducted 302 bombing attacks that delivered 541 tons of bombs, and another 88 tons were dropped on targets while patrolling an area of 600,000 square miles to blockade the Japanese bases. Eleven Japanese supply vessels were attacked; six were confirmed sunk and five were seriously damaged and probably sunk. The first Japanese supply vessel was destroyed by Lt. David Walkinshaw and his crew on January 1, 1944. "

Not only bombing! The PV-1s stationed in the Solomons were used as night-fighters as well (because of their radar, good speed, armament, and lack of dedicated night fighters http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif )
