View Full Version : Why the blandness???

Hi peeps,

This is directed at the art-director of Assasin's Creed...

I'm a bit worried that the final game will have the same bland color scheme as pictured in the previews.
I must ask you, why?
Reality is so much more colorful and rich in contrasts.
Lately there have been a number of games that depict a reality that is much more bland than, well, reality.
To be honest, when i play these games i get a feeling of emptyness and sadness.
It makes me not want to be in that world. I get depressed.

Now, why would you want to give people that feeling?

I understand it costs a bit more texture space, but its nothing creative minds can't cope with.
I also understand that it is in some way stylish.
Well style like that evaporates pretty easily.
I already take the style for granted after just seeing some promo material.

So please, pretty please,
put some color and contrast into the picture.
It will make that world a more natural place to be.

Jade Raymon has said something about a colour scheme for each city. I.e. a blue and cold one for acre(I think it was that city). It's probably to make it fit their ideas about the game. Adding strong colours might ruin the medieval feeling although it probably was more colorful.

i'll tell you why, Its because its in the third crusade and in that time there weren't many colours for clothing avalible, people are wearing wool alot and that has those dark, sad colours you talked about.

You are fooled by your imagination.
Even those surroundings had a lot more depth to them.
There are no real circumstances under which a normal person would perceive the world to be like that.
It's an overhyped blandness.

EDIT:
It's not nessesarily the colors of the clothes.
There seems to be an unnatural lack of contrast and color nuances.
There is a lot of gray/white, but in reality the sun gives a yelowish color. On highlighted areas it seems white to your eyes, but in shadows it adds a bit of orange to the toning. In this game it seems the light produces only uncolored white or even blueish colors.

I believe this is called tone and symbolism.
it works on a subconscious level.
So if that is what you are feeling. then it worked.

I know, but again,
Why would the makers want me to feel unpleasant while playing a game?
Especially as one usually invests more time in a game than, say, a movie and especially when its such a persistent narrative tool as toning.

It's not like reality beacause we play videogames to escape that very same reality..

I actually like the way everything looks. Les g˘uts et les colours, I suppose. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Because just like how films use filters to give it a distinct look, Assassin's creed is also using certain colors and low contrast to make it more cinematic so to speak. Not every game has to be like viva pinata, I really like how this game looks and like the approach that the next generation games are taking like MGS4 and etc to really distinguish the look of the game.

True, but movies usually play for just 1.5 hours.
I expect to get much more time out of a game so i will be experiencing the 'feel' of the game for a longer period. Hence my concerns.

What i have noticed is that game manufacturers start slapping some toning on games just for the fudge of it.
Its a cheap way to give the game a different feel.
A trick.
It works when used properly, but in recent years i have seen games that make me feel apathic about the game world because of the lack of colors and contrasts (presumably done to simulate 'real'-ness).
I cant imagine a game designer wants me to feel apathic about their world (and game as a whole), let alone depressed.

I think a good compromise would be to be able to switch between 'normal' and 'bland' mode.
Maybe even a 'less bland' option would suffice.

I liked the looks too, untill i saw that every screenshot had this look.
Then i got worried about the rest of the game.

I love the art style. It says "killing time" to me.

Also, Jerusalem today isn't all that colorful, so I imagine it wouldn't exactly be a rainbow in the 12th century.

no, no, dont get me wrong! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I dont want it to be more colorful than life,
but i do want it to be a bit more life like.
In reality there is a lot more color stuff going on. I dont mean bright colors, but subtle color dynamics.
I'm pretty sure that even the blandest place on earth has more color in it than AC.
And that's a shame because i'm realy looking forward to playing this.

Screenshots on the site are all from the same city, Acre. Jerusalem and the other one have their own, different look.

i agree wit ZilDoggo i dont wanna be feeling depressed while im playing the game and i think the only thing the game needs is a bit more of an orange glow from the sun... in the new teaser you can see that in one area it was very orange as Altair rides up and slicers that dude who chucked a rock at him. but im not saying i want the whole game like that but just a bit of a more warm feel to it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

i think if we start cutting the guards heads up like in the teaser we're gonna get all the red colour the game needs

Well it's not supposed to be a happy game. It's during a war...and wars are never fun.

I for one love the artistic style. Let's leave it to the people who are actually making the game...they know best.

Again,(and this is only about the 4th time i'm explaining this http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif ) i'm not looking for candy-land happy-happy-joy-joy stuff here.
I just feel that the bland toning will work against the game after one sits with it for some time.

There is just so much wrong with what you are saying here that i need to break it up...
- Noone knows best. We are humans, accept it.
-Why do you think the makers have better ideas than me, per se?
- I'm a potential paying customer looking for entertainment. I'm just telling the creators of entertainment what kind of entertainment i like. It's up to them to listen to me or not.
- Saying that one should shut up because someone else knows best is basically stupid.
Noone gets to know anything without asking questions, poking around and starting a discussion.

Again, one might expect the sun to shine from time to time. Cities do look different depending on weather.

Zil has had one of the calmest approches to to the game's "flaws" that I've ever seen, lol. Much respect for keeping composure, my friend http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

I'm glad to see you think it looks good now. I, for one, I think the game looks amazing! I think once we all have it playing on our HDTVs and 23" LCD Monitors, we'll all be impressed by the artistic design, regardless of how highly we think of it now.

Edit after reading post right before mine: I'm certainly not a geography major, nor do I claim to be one, so I'm not sure if it snows in these cities. But how amazing would this game look if the city was covered in snow? Seeing the trail of footsteps & blood-stained snow. That'd be so awesome!

Well... Several things may attribute to the bleakness... Smoke, pollution (not as much as now, I know) pouring out of homes... You're not exactly in a tropical rain forest... War, depression, poverty are probably concepts that the art guys want you to feel... Say... Did you see Kingdom of Heaven? I believe it was during the crusades? Pretty bleak movie...
