is so cool! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Those of you flying IL-2 can relate to this. Those of you who don't might just like the screenshots.

Obviously, cargo ships (unarmed) are easy prey & warships are extremely hazardous because of their defensive fire. But its so darn satisfying to watch your bombs connect & then detonate if you're lucky enough to emerge unscathed! Likewise, its a real drag if you not only miss but you have to nurse a wounded plane home too (& even more so if its not able to make it home).

Here, (from last night) one of my JG52 squadmates in a Bf110 using 2 SC500 bombs skip-bombed a British Destroyer.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/JG52MadAdler/6.jpg

Another good tactic against a large warship is to dive-bomb it by approaching bow-to-stern (or vice-versa) so that you reduce your chances of missing by overshoot. That is what I did here in a Ju87B-2 using 1 SC1000 bomb against a Russian destroyer.

Anyone else flying IL-2 got any screenies of you bombing ships? Or anyone just playing SHIII got screenies of planes bombing ships? I know I'd love to see them.

I love bombing skip-bombing ships in IL2, there my fav targets... There's nothing like skimming the water in a ju88, flak fizzing past you everywhere and nail that SOB.. Ill see if i can find some screenies I made. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This reminds me, I remember reading that in the Falklands Conflict in 1982 the British ships would always try to turn side on to approaching Argentine jets, shich you'd initially think would be madness, but because the chances of a bomb that missed would bounce OVER the ship, as opposed to being head on where a bouncing bomb would probably have hit further down the length of the ship it worked.

one of my best bomb strikes was il2 online.

after evading aaa fire from 4 carriers and escorts, i dove 90 degrees on a smoldering carrier the ijn had been working over. only seconds prior to release, 2 enemy planes spawned on deck to meet their fate. and my crew met its fate moments later after leveling out and getting jumped by multiple fighters...pilot and gunner lost at sea.

man, i wish i had mapped screen capture to my hotas.

The He-111 makes for a decent and fun torpeedo bomber, shame the JU88 cant carry torps in IL-2

i'm thinking of buying IL-2
is it still a good buy even though it's fairly old?

Absolutely! I am playing the original IL-2 right now, little outdated but still so much fun. You can buy IL-2 (original) for about $2.95 off the internet, amazing when considering what a great game it is.

Happy someone brought up IL-2 on the forums, I was going to but thought it might be a bit http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/353.gif

Either way, I am looking to buy IL-2: FB's, unfortunately it is discontinued in my part of the world and online its about $20.00, not sure its worth it but after reading about being able to perform long range level bombing in HE's I've changed my mind. Does anyone know of a cheaper way of getting FB's? Maybe a used copy nobody wants anymore?

Even the older version is better than the rest of the rabble!
There is the 'gold pack' which has the latest patches etc..

Be prepared for absolute dissapointment (cos you expected a MS flight sim) to extacy as you actually learn to fly a real combat sim... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

theres just certain games even though theyre old theyre still good. IL-2 is one of those games. OFP is another one. but i like some IL-2 . that HE-111 is just sweet, my roommates are lucky that thing doesnt have nose guns or they would be even more toast.

They do have guns in the nose (& the H6 has one in the tail) but I know what you mean... there aren't any that you can fire from the pilot's seat like you can in an A-20 or B-25.

Anyone got screenshots (IL-2 or SHIII) of ships getting bombed?

As mentioned above, I am thinking about buying the FB's gold pack, I found one online for $30, comes with Aces Expansion. My question is Ace's expansion worth the extra $10? And how realistic is the level bombing campaign in FB's, because thats all I'm really buying the game for. I am a huge fan of level bombing and the type HE are some of my favorite twin engine bombers in WWII. I hear that IL-2 is releasing another game soon called battle of britain, supposedly a standalone game. Don't think its the same as this http://www.airwarfare.com/images/amazon/WOV_Large.jpg

Interesting...

The Aces expansion pack is definitely worth $10! It adds so much more to the stock game; lots of flyable AC, ground objects, etc.

As for the level-bombing campaign... I can't say for sure. I've not flown much of the offline campaign stuff. I've mostly flown online with squadmates doing custom co-op missions. But I can say that the He111s are great planes & are excellent for high altitude level-bombing. The only problem I have with the H2 is that it's bombsight is highly sensitive (true to life, I hear). The H6's bombsight is rock-solid plus it has an additional gun (a LROF 20MM cannon) in the tail for defensive armament. The H6 is thus the model of choice, although I wish it had the 30xSC50 loadout that the H2 has (great for carpet bombing)... but then again, it does have much heavier loadout options than the H2. IE: up to 2xSC1000 bombs (devestating!), 2 torpedoes, etc.

yayyaaa http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif i would get the cheaper, too. just used that link to make sure we were talking about the same release. there are a couple different bundled versions out.

Play.com ($30 even) doesn't ship to the US http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif So I ended up buying off a different UK website which does, called Gameplay. Ended up being a total of ($35 with shipping). Not bad considering FB's alone was probably $45 when it first came out.

Some of you might like reading some of the after-action reports some of my squadmates have made. These (Edit: the really good ones) were posted under our NEWS section here:

and
Stab/JG52 The ButcherBirds News:2005 (http://www.geocities.com/jg52thebutcherbirds/News2005.txt)

I guess nobody has any screenies of ships getting pounded from the air?
