I really thought I was on to a great tactic. When disabling and allied merchant in a convoy, hide beneath the non-moving merchant until the enemy is out of range. Then take care of the disabled ship when the coast is clear.

It worked once, but the last time I tried it, it was a disaster.

Here's me lurking beneath a T2 Tanker I had disabled... The destroyers were pinging me like crazy, but they couldn't get in position to depth charge me... then someone called the air force!! They bombed one of their own before forcing me out of hiding! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Normally it works for me, im a few meters below it and ready. If i hear any more explosions above my head, i hit the gas and crash dive.

I too use this tactic when possible, never had my cover blown out of the water above me though.

I have heard of uboats using merchants to protect them from escort attacks.

But i don't think the uboat would hide under the merchant for a long time.

More likely it would break off the contact then return later.

But there were thousands uboat engagements during the war, so who can say what happened every time.

I don't know if you actually have to get under a ship to be safe, just get fairly close. The escorts can't exactly turn on a dime, and most sailors hate the thought of getting anywhere close to another ship. Probably anything within 100 yards would work on a guess.

I tired that a long time ago in loch Ewe, hiding under a Fiji. The DD's kept circling and pinging for hours, until i finally gave up and reladed a save http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's a good tactic. I use it to effect sometimes. In the training mission for convoys, I would surface next to the tankers and the DD's would fire, hitting the tankers and sinking them. I got the tonnage.

Well, very unfortunately, I got NO tonnage for them sinking their own ship. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

It was foolish to try for this convoy of all tankers as well, seeing as I had 20% hull integrity, and I daren't go below 40 meters.

Still, it's a good story to be told. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif
