Hello,

I already participate in another online flight sim, but since everyone here raves about Il-2 so much, I'd like to try it.

However, I can't find any instructions on the website about how to get started if you are new (and I really looked), I see no demos to download, and the link to buy Il-2 is broken. I figure that friendly forum users can help me makes sense of how to proceed.

Thank you.

You can find the DVD at Amazon.com. You could buy the downlaod version from Ubi (http://www.ubi.com/US/Games/Info.aspx?pId=5163), but if you want to use any mods you have to have the DVD version.

Once you get the sim, you'll need to patch it to version 4.08m.

There is a demo but it is for an ancient version so forget it.

The version to get is the IL2 1946 game on DVD or by download. Make sure it says "1946". I am noit sure where to get the download but many online game stores stock the DVD version.

The preferred DVD is the US version because many non US DVD's of the game use the evil Sony securerom root kit. I have no idea why they are different.

Once you have the game download the 4.08m patch and upgrade.

If you are nopt playing online get the 4.09 beta patch as well.

If you intend to play online just stick with 4.08.

You will also want to install the hyperlobby client as that is where most people play.

One more thing. if you intend to play online join a squadron (see the squadron thread) . They will teach you to fly, help with technical problems and provide an instant group to fly with,

You should buy IL2: 1946, which contains all of the previous IL2 content as well as new campaigns and planes, etc. You should be able to find it on Amazon.com or at some retailers. It's dirt cheap!

Or you could sign up for Steam, the online game distribution service, which I believe is selling the game for super cheap right now (that's how I bought it.)

Wow...I envy you, your just starting out on a really fun adventure. I still remember the excitement of shooting down my first AI fighter, and the thrill and "Blood LUST" of my first real "live" pilot...Oh, that feeling of accomplishment the first time I landed my fighter without crashing (last week_LOL). And all that fascinating research on "energy tactics" and "Boom & Zoom" vs "turn and burn"...gosh, what fun you have a head of you.

Here are a few things to get you started:

Cockpit Arrangement Guide (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=3265)

Aircraft Reference Guide (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=316)

Air combat Maneuver Visualization (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Knowledge_Base&op=show&kid=330)

Here is a pretty good guide to air combat...its called In Pursuit (http://web.comhem.se/%7Eu85627360/inpursuit.pdf) and it is a PDF so right click and save the link.

One last web site you should (must) visit, once your ready, is "Darts" (Don't worry its only the Internet) video guides...the man has made some top notch video lessons on a variety of very useful topics like "Rangefinding with your static gunsight", "Bomb Skipping" and "Taking out FLAK batteries by yourself"...find his website here. (http://www.darts-page.com/) I can't begin tell you how good his videos are (I doubt you would find one person here who would disagree with me)...

...here is the demo, final version (IL2 1946) contains somewhat better graphics and a great number of aircraft (more than 200!).

If you are warbird lover I think you'll enjoy it.

Once you have the game set up you might want to try some totally fun training missions to get up to speed. Find some at the link in my signature (there is advice for newbies in there too).

Welcome to the game and to a great community.
