I host servers on UBI with what I would call medium settings. I host for 8 players on my DSL line and my server gets full pretty quickly.
People seem to like my servers and there is never any real complaining.

What I'd like to know is what do you guys think makes for a good server?

What level of difficulty settings do you use?
What Aircraft for each team?
Do use use the default net maps or your own custom maps (FMB)?

There may be a thread regarding this already, but search just doesn't work here so I'm starting one.

Would you gracious people mind posting what settings you use for your servers and what you think makes a good server?

I think people would like to share and compare /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Thanx in advance... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Map=mountains or small map with some AA protecting bases
icons=range only, dark blue and dark maroon (limited to 3000km)
clouds=there
padlock=on
speedbar=on
everything else full real
planeset=axis vs. allies (various ways..sometimes get rid of uber planes)

Tell people no skin download and no voice comms (both lag a server to hell)

Uhm... - here we go:

1) 1940 up to 1942 planesets.

2) Russia=Red - Germany=Blue & no enemy planes available.

3) Distance between enemy bases should be approx. 30-50 kms.

4) Not too much AAA as it causes lag. (3 pieces per base)

5) Difficulty setting must be as hard as possible: externals & cockpit off is a turn-off for me but I don´t mind padlock, icons or minimap even though I don´t use it. Speedbar only is fine with me. Important thing is that you can stalk.

6) A good briefing that informs you of the servers rules if any.

7) Maps: Crimea, Kuban, Prokhorovka, Berlin, Moscow or Stalingrad.

8) Plenty of time to play - don´t host if you are on your way out after 10 min.

9) A fair host who cares about everybody having fun.

Too demanding?

I like servers best when the host is present

I tell people they can have skin downloads on in my mission brief as long as they don't use 1024 skins. Whether they stick to this or not I'm not sure, but it doesn't seem to cause that much trouble.
I have limited the aircraft to the latest prop fighters with a few mods and no jets. These I have pre-loaded as stationary aircraft on a far corner of the mountain map. Seems to get rid of stutter for the most part.

I used to allow vulching until pilots started abusing it and vulched and nothing else without letting people take off at all. I no longer allow vulching.

I also do not allow bailing for points. Gets on my nerves when people kill - bail - kill - bail - kill - bail.

I also allow taking down RTB aircraft, they are fair game on my servers. If they can't escape that's their problem...

I haven't really dabbled too much with FR servers, either hosting my own or joining them.
I've noticed some pilots really are at one with their a/c when avoiding stalls. I know when they are coming and can ease off to avoid them but my problem is mantaining the turns that people seem to do in FR servers.
May need a pilot refresher course /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Thanks for info on your servers guys /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

When I do host on ubi.com, I generally use the online maps because the larger ones with towns cause lag when the houses, etc. have to be drawn ( or destructed).

I keep settings at medium.
I don't care for the no external views turned on.
A/C icons (tags) I keep on but the map icons I shut off--I like to sneak up on the enemy if possible.

I like to put ground objects on a map and create a mission 'theme' in FMB. Blank maps are okay for d/f but I quickly get bored with that. What is the point of dogfighting when there is nothing to 'dogfight' for?

I almost always add AI a/c into my missions also. Even though I host a dogfight server, I mainly stick with ground attacks.
