Looks at souncard (SB Live), horror.

I think it's sound related. Got to your il-2 setup and disable sound as in picture below.

When your troubles are gone you know it's your sound(card).

Don't panic Iceman.I have a PIII with win98 and GeForce4MX440 It took some tweaking but I get good framerates now and good graphics too.
Enough small talk.
Go to www.mudmovers.com (http://www.mudmovers.com) and you will find the set-up specs for your rig or at least something close enough to get you going.

When it is your soundcard, lower your hardware acceleration. Also try a different/latest driver. And in the il-2 sound tab go to custom sound settings.

Try to play with the settings. Like 3d engine balanced, and try different speaker types (headphone, desktop speakers etc).

ok tried it with sound disabled and still freezes/locksup after about 20 seconds, in a mission, in campaign, in multiplayer, and in quick mission! everything! it just lockups causing me to restart computer every single time!! the fps is perfect for the 20 seconds that the game runs! well hopefully i can get this fixed, cause i didn't want to spend $70 CN for a game that doesn't work.... thanks for your suggestions for now, but hasn't worked yet

Maybe your cpu overheats, but that is a wild guess. You got any lockups with other games? Did you download the latest nvidea drivers? Did you try running it in directX insteed of in opengl or the other way arround?

Iceman have you checked your BIOS settings. Also what chipset are you running.I had to install via 4in1 drivers to get the 4403 graphic drivers to preform.

i have the latest nvidia drivers, it locksup in both opengl and directx, it doesn't happen in other games, by the way, Il-2 Sturmovik the original runs perfect on my computer at full settings, no freezes what so ever... i am thinking it also might be overheating but im not sure... and one last thing, when i did borrow from a friend i tried burning the game and running it on a no-cd crack, but the same thing happened, it would freeze... i was wondering if that was the anti-theft thing kicking in, and maybe its in the system registry??? that is also a wild guess but for this game does it have something like which causes it to freeze if not the original copy??? but i just bought it myself today at a store and its all legit and legal... so is there any files in the registry that i may have to delete which cause the game to freeze like this?? also i am not really familar with the registry so if this is the problem then i may need guidance... thanks

It could be any number of things but I think Sletchvalk may be on to something there (re: CPU overheating)...
My rig was fine with all applications but would crash when I tried IL2, usually within the loading screen, sometimes during the intro... ultimately I troublshooted down two avenues 1- power supply problems (low 3 volt rail) and 2- overheating.

IL2 is very CPU intensive... one way to test this theory would be to use one of those "stress test" applications. I have no experience with them, but others may know more and help out if you ask.

Keep posting and we'll probably make some progress /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
CG

PS- I just re-read your post and you state that it crashes early on, no matter what (something like that), this is what reminded me of my power supply problems (it would crash soon, even from a "cold start"). Check your voltages in the BIOS and see if any are more than 5% off.

PPS- It could be any number of things... these are only a couple of minor avenues of solution finding.

im not sure what my power supply is, and how to see if its overheating and all that stuff... can someone tell me how to find out my power source/supply, and how to find out if its overheating... also i have my video card clocked, think its clocked too much??? would this cause overheating for the video card?? i still might think it could be this registry thing... anyone know??

XyZspineZyX
06-23-2003, 09:32 PM
i would try clocking down your video card to its normal specs it sounds alot like its over heating to me also on a side note if you have the spare cash you may want to get a newer card i had the mx400 and it would stuter like a chevy. also make try to make sure you have at least 512mb of ram

XyZspineZyX

Could be an overclocking issue, mine is overclocked, but runs very well.. Try setting video card speed to default, then see what happens.

its not the overclocking thing just tested out, i have 512mb of ram also, i will check the voltage thing in my bios in sec... i can't upgrade video cards at the moment, just spend 70 bucks on this game lol... so does anyone else think it could be something in the registry??? maybe i have to delete some stuff??

ok guys im clueless... i still think it might be and probably is the issue in the registry... or somewhere... cause i did burn this game before and i had the exact same problem, but that was because the game was burned... this happened to me when i tried burning another game Rise of Nations off of a friend... it would freeze up my whole computer after a few seconds of playing... well now i bought the game... and still same problem... is there anything that i can get rid of thats on my computer still saying that the game is a fake or whatever??? if this isn't the problem then please someone help me... but i am very very sure that this is the problem... it only happens with the several games that i have tried to burn... but games i just go out and buy run perfectly fine... so i did burn this one, uninstalled cause i got the anti-theft fade thingy, now im getting it with my bought copy from Wal-Mart... IceMan, this might seem like a real strange suggestion, but I had the EXACT same problem that you are having and I managed to solve it. Ok, here's what I suggest:

1) Get DirectX9 if don't have it already. Go into to the il2fb setup program and set the resolution super low (something like 800x600 @ 16 bits). Make sure you are using DirectX (not OpenGL). Then Under Video Settings, go with the safest settings and disable all extensions.

2) Run the game. Go into the video settings. Go to custom settings. Make sure and set the "Landscape Lighting" setting to the lowest setting.

3) Try to run a training mission track or something. See if it freezes up. I hope it's not going to. If the game runs, you can go back into the setup program and try higher resolution and normal Geforce2 settings. Just make sure that you keep that landscape lighting to the lowest setting.

This is basically a driver problem in nvidia drivers past 41.X. I actually called up ubisoft tech support to fix my issue. Anyway, I hope this works!!!

this sounds promising!! im going to try right now, thx!

XyZspineZyX
06-24-2003, 02:35 AM
ok i just tried with it set to 800x600x16 in direct x mode, with video setting set to safest and with sound disabled and with all video options in the game set to lowest possible... and it actually played through a whole track!! now to go up from there, what are you current settings for everything??? and thx dude! this may be the thing that will work http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

XyZspineZyX
06-24-2003, 02:49 AM
glad to help =)

Well, I've got a Geforce4, so I just set my video settings to the Geforce4 presets..but basically, if you got it to work, go into the setup program and use the Geforce2 presets. You should be able to enable sound too. Then just go into the game, start setting those video settings to something reasonable one at a time. For me, the setting that caused the big problems was the landscape lighting. So I just leave landscape lighting to the lowest setting, but I've got everything else up to medium/high. Game runs great! I suspect that your issue is that landscape lighting thing too. Anyway, good luck!

XyZspineZyX
06-24-2003, 02:51 AM
just tried setting the settings back to normal... froze at 20 seconds into the track... this is wierd because how much different is the game il-2 sturmovik for il-2 sturmovik forgotten battles?? i have the original il-2 and it runs perfectly with no stutters and with all visual detail max and sound detail max, with like 30-50 fps!! and il-2 fb wont even run on near lowest settings... so what do you have your settings at?? right now mine only works on lowest possible... but it still even freezes sometimes!

XyZspineZyX
06-24-2003, 02:58 AM
Dude check out this site for settings http://kpush.tripod.com

You're not having fun 'till they dial...911!

XyZspineZyX
06-24-2003, 03:09 AM
Ok, see when u reset with the Geforce2 presets the setup program is gonna override your custom settings. What u should do is go into the setup program pick a higher resolution and use the geforce2 presets. then when u run the game, go back into the custom video settings. Your landscape lighting and all the other stuff will no longer be in the lowest setting. They'll be whatever the geforce2 presets set them to be, which is obviously not the lowest settings. From this point, leave everything as it is but MAKE SURE and change the landscape lighting setting to the lowest. So everyhting should be normal except landscape lighting. Now try running a mission. You should get decent graphics and hopefully no freezes. If it still freezes, I've got some more suggestions =)

But I've got a feeling that this will work.

XyZspineZyX
06-24-2003, 03:29 AM
ok dude slow down you way ahead of me! now it just freezes again like before no matter what settings! i put it in 640x480x16 with sound disabled, and safe video settings, with all the ingame video setting set to very low! and it still freezes now! that time must have just been a fluke... well... i am starting to think it might be my power supply or overheating... how can i figure out my power usage, and how much i have of V's and if its overheating???

XyZspineZyX
06-24-2003, 03:36 AM
more suggestions eh? lol... lets hear them http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif but im pretty convinced that this problem does not have to do with graphic settings in the game... or sound settings...

You have newer Via 4in1 drivers installed on your system. Abit and other mobo manufacturers do not reccommend 4in1 drivers past version 4.35 or 4.38 for the Via 133 chipset. Having a Thunderbird core I'm guessing thats the chipset you have. Guessing is not reliable.
You have enough CPU to run the sim and the dx looks clean, so it may be some small detail being overlooked.

Edit: My friend Andy ran il2 on a 750 athlon with the same ge2 video card and had no problems.

Steve_V might have a good point. I had a similar problem when I did a reformat & reinstall of windows. I have an older system that uses a VIA Apollo Pro chipset. I had a lockup problem in IL2 afterwards & wound up going back to VIA 4 in 1 v4.28s to cure it. Here's a link to VIAs older drivers page.
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300#old
They say that when you install these, install them one at a time. & don't install the AGP driver in Turbo mode. Use regular mode.

You may also be right about your registry having problems. Have you tried installing the game in a different directory?
You may still have some junk in there from the burned copy.

Also I see your OS is installed on drive E is that the same drive you're installing the game to? I've heard of people trying to install a game to a drive other than the one windows is on & it doesn't work too well.

Good luck!

Cheers......Smokin256

ok i've installed in different locations and still same error... i am sure its not a graphics or sound problem, im sure... it has to do with somethine in the game, like FADE or something thats anti-theft protection messed up in install... i have a normal cd-drive and a read and write drive... should i try installing on the read and write drive and see if that does anything?

Hey Iceman,

still having problems, eh?

If I recall correctly, you tried installing your friend's copy of FB before this one right?

"cause this seems like its some kind of anti-theft protection thing going on thats still hidden in my computer somewhere that says i have a pirated copy of this game... which i don't."

Two thoughts- 1- your friends copy may have somehow left a "residue" (not too well versed in software/software protection stuff) which is still on the machine and confusing it when it tries to load FB (the new copy you got)... I'm not sure how to get rid of that, I'm just guessing that the problem.

2- FB's copy protection doesn't like CD-write drives, I believe (but you've tried a CDrom drive already).

Unrelated: Since you have already had the original IL2 working fine, I no longer think that your problem is Power Supply related; but if you want to check your voltages here's how:

in the BIOS, you should have a "system monitor" option (or something to that effect) select that option and you should have information relating to the temperatures and fan speeds, and below that a listing of voltages:
10V+
10V-
5V
3.3V etc... (this is not accurate, just to give the idea)
the main thing is to make sure that your voltages in the column on the right match with the required voltages indicated on the left, within about 5%.

Keep plugging, if IL2 worked on your rig, no reason that FB won't /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Cheers,

ok my voltages seem fine, thanks for telling me how to check... i have been doing virus checks, registry cleaning, and searching through my computer for anything related to il-2 fb lol, i have also been talking with the ubi soft technical support peeps and asking them what exact theft protection they have and what it does, cause if the protection is designed to do exactly whats happening to me then it must be something doing with that, i just don't know where this "file" is and how to get rid of it or edit it... i will keep trying! thx for you support people, this is a baffling problem... but i think we are narrowing it down. Also one more thing, for some reason when installing when it says to insert disc 2 i insert it then it says error wrong disc, insert disc 1, so i insert disc one and it starts to install again, so i close the one thats trying to install again, then i insert disc 2 and the original install continues lol

wierd but could be a problem, might be thinking im doing some installing of "pirated" software, i don't know how il-2 fb's theft protection works, or same with my cd-rom drive... well... i dunno, gotta wait for a reply from the ubi soft tech dudes, until then... the original il-2 will have to do... man i really hate yak's... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hi I havent read the whole thread. But I realise you are using a Nvidia card, right.

I had experienced game stutter every second, and mouse movement in the menu was stuttering too.

What when wrong was I previously upgraded the graphics drivers. Windows work fine and also directX games too. Only openGL was crippled!!

Try both renderers DirectX and Opengl, to see if one works.

Either way re-install your graphics driver with a stable version. And check to see if it is working fine with games you know works.

XyZspineZyX
06-25-2003, 04:34 PM
I'm all out of ideas...

your rig is adequate, IL2 works fine for you, but you can't install FB- so it doesn't seem hardware related... which leaves the copy protection problem theory. But I know nothing about that kind of thing.

I understand that you've uninstalled it and re-installed it several times.

At this point, I would suggest starting a new thread with a title like "Hunter or Steve, installation problem- DXdiag attached"- as this one is getting long and confused, and probably ignored.

Really can't offer much more (other than suggest a complete HD reformat... which I'm not sure you want to do!!)
If anything comes to mind I'll PM you or post,

Cheers

I get the same crashes and have been trying to track down my problem for over a month. I feel your pain, but at least we are learning as we grope blindly through the technology forest. I have just reformatted (again), and after my last long chat with Microsoft I was informed that running Open GL with some ATI cards and Audigy gamer (new drivers out today, btw) causes crashes. I can ONLY run the game on Direct X video settings, usually running the Windows XP compatibility mode software. I've tried many different Radeon 9700 Pro Drivers, including the newest ones, to no avail. Game ran great on Windows ME, but I HAD to upgrade to XP(if it's not broke, don't try to fix it). /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Today I think I'm going to Multi-boot (XP on one drive, ME on another) or maybe just send XP Home back. I only bought it in hopes of improving FB and my brother-in-law keeps jabbing me with reason, suggesting I buy into console gaming after returning XP.

Little does he realize that it would be a personal offront to allow the machine to "beat me" after this long a struggle. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Maybe I should just buy the Falcon from Buzz.

Another item:

The Passmark benchmarking software also crashes the computer at the 3D tests, although it will run the program in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode. At their site they suggest a new Radeon driver stating that the problem lies with the "Themes" in Windows XP. May be something to that notion.

SYMPTOMS
You may receive one of the following error messages on a blue screen:

STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
-or-

STOP: 0x100000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M
CAUSE
This issue can occur when the display driver is caught in an infinite loop, typically waiting for the video hardware to become idle. This usually indicates a problem with the video hardware or with the display driver not being able to program the hardware correctly.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, obtain and install the most current driver for your video adapter or replace your video card.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
On the Settings tab, click Advanced, and then click the Troubleshoot tab.
Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, and then click to clear the Enable Write Combining check box.
Click OK, and then click OK.

NOTE: This procedure prevents the display driver from programming the hardware incorrectly, but results in a loss of some display functionality and performance. Although you can increase the hardware acceleration settings to a point above None to regain functionality and performance, this increases the chances of the issue reoccurring. For maximum stability, leave hardware acceleration off.

This is the only way I can get my P4 1.5 gig Gateway to play FB in Windows XP:

After reformatting, I loaded only the following to get the game to run at all in XP.
XP Home Edition with NO UPDATES
Audigy drivers only (that came with the card)
Radeon drivers only (that came with the card)

This may only muddy the waters, but perhaps it will eliminate some variables or give you some ideas. For me, it allowed me to fly a little again while I continue the tweak fest of my machine and XP.

Good luck!

OK, This is probably not gonna work but I'll mention it anyway. I once had the fan on my power supply to wear out and run more slowly than it should. This caused the power supply itself to overheat when it was under stress. A cheap replacement fan cured the problem. You can place your hand on the power supply and see if it feels unreasonably hot. Along these same lines, this time of year can be very trying on your PC if your room isnt well airconditioned. Try opening your PC case and setting a fan on the desk to actually blow into the case. See if this eliminates the problem. I had an old Pent 3 rig one time that had to have a fan on the side cover of the case all the time or it would overheat and lock-up.
