This may be old news to some, but I have only just heard about this research car from VW. It makes the Smart Car look like a gas guzzler: VW 1 Litre Car (http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/gw/vw1litre.htm) Gets well over 200 mpg US! Nearly 300 mpg Imperial!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Found another few links, but this one provides more details about the road trip made by VW's boss from Wolfsburg to Hamburg: VeeDub Ride to Hamburg (http://www.cartype.com/page.cfm?id=934&alph=ALL&dec=ALL) Plus, it features something near and dear to my heart, rear wheel drive.

FongFF, I see what you mean. Stick on some wings and armament and you have a ME-110.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Just after WWII there was a semi-popular vehicle

more of a covered motorcycle

front and back
2 spaced front wheels

The 1-Litre looks much nicer, I'm sure you would agree. Here is another article that goes into more detail about the development of this car: Development (http://www.auto123.com/en/info/news/prototype,view,Volkswagen.spy?artid=14613&pg=1) Amazing that they can get such economy. Much of it due in no small part to the weight reduction. This car weighs about 640 pounds, about the same weight as two average American adults. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Wouldn't take much of a hit to destroy that car. I don't feel safe in a "Smart car" because the only thing between me and the anything infront is a piece of glass. On the other hand, it is nice to see the many ideas that are coming up on the topic of fuel efficency...I'm looking forward to hydrogen powered cars.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

At some point in the not too distant future, fuel prices will go high and stay there. If Americans see prices of $5 to $10 a litre, they will soon change their minds about small cars. As much as I love driving my Dodge Charger, I think this will be my last kick at the can as far as driving a muscular car goes. I'll be happy if I can operate it for the next 10 years or so. But if gas prices continue to grow at the same pace as the last ten years, I'll be switching over to something very frugal for my commuting. We North Americans are very spoiled when it comes to gas prices. That is all about to change, and sooner than we think it will.

Not quite as vulnerable as may seem at first look. Watch this YouTube video of a Smart Car crash: Kabang! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju6t-yyoU8s) The time will come when most of the cars on the road are small and light. Because of the lower mass of the average car, the impact forces are much less and more easily survivable. But if you get hit by an 18-wheeler...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I wrote my last post before I had finished viewing that test crash video. If you drive any vehicle into a concrete barrier at 70 mph, your chances of survival are very slim. The rate of deceleration tears up your vital internal organs, such as your heart and liver. Your body may survive in one piece, but your insides will be jumbled.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

A concrete barrier, perhaps so, but I think if I ran my luxury SUV into your Smart Car, I'd be the one to have a better chance of walking away from that accident. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

well, if we figure out a way to phase out all suv's and keep trucks and busses on seperate roads, i'm sure we can have a safe alternative to travel in one of these small beauties http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Try driving THAT into a concrete wall at 70 mph and open the door http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/touche.gif

I wouldn't be happy to be in a Smart when colliding with anything bigger than a motorcycle. And even that will be a risk to your intestants...
