I like the aggression of the destroyers in GWX, but lately I am thinking its abit "UEBER".

Detected a convoy, so I lay down a parallel apth to the convoy overtake it and trying to get close. First I tried closing in above water, but it seems that the destroyer always sees me first or my watch office doesnt tell me a destroyer is nearby so that attack run is ruined.

Second try I plott a course to overtake the convoy then try to get near while submerged with periscope barely above the water line (its late afternoon), I am running at 2 knots, but the destroyer closest to me picks me up on sonar and is heading straight at me, another attack run ruined.

Third try, I come in from the front/left of the convoy submerged again with periscope just above the water line, the destroyer infront of the convoy picks me up this time even I have taken every precaution, motor is running 2 knots, periscope barely above water line, my U-boat profile is as narrow as possible to the sweeping sonar of the closest destroyer and I still get picked up before I even get close to have a realistic chance to sink a merchant, so I was getting pissed and was heading full steam on a collision course against the incoming destroyer, our boats collided and I ramed my command tower into the DD hull and it sank quickly.

I dont know how you guys do it, to be successful with GWX, but I cant figure it out how to get close to a convoy.

To be realistic, I kow historical tha U-Boats did most of the attacks at night and above water with the UZO, but with GWX the UBER destroyers seem to find me every time and its only 1941, so the killer groups havent even been build yet.

Yeh ive used GWX before, which is a great mod, lots of good eye candy etc, Realism is the word it says in the manual. It seems there is a fine line between realism and super rock hard escorts and detection, i still use SH3 but now have reverted back to stock which seems more realistic to me, especially late in the war, all things to all people, still a great mod though.

Yeah, I ended up uninstalling the mod and re-installing the game with current patch and just play with that.

Having a blast with the original game and enjoying sneaking into a convoy and trying to take out 2 ships per attack run. The little flower corvette is the peskiest pursuer after the attack.

No it's not uber at all!!! The stock is far too easy. I have no problem making early war surface attacks..and to the OP the Brits already started getting radar during the course of 1941..when in 1941 are you getting detected??

Joeab, it feels abit "UBER" to me. Its only January 1941 and no matter what I do a destroyer always detects me. So if you do something else that a destroyer doesnt deteckt you while on a attack run on a convoy, please let me know.

This convoy has 4 destroyers (2 dido DD and 2 black swans). I realy tried to get close to the convoy (within 1000 meter of the outer row of merchants), but every time the "Ueber" destroyer picked up my signal.

If I have to dive to 150 meters then wait to the convoy to be on top of me then blow balast and shoot my torpedos on merchants and crash dive again, thats not realistic to me.

To me the approach is half the game not just the hit/kill on a merchant and most U-Boats attacked convoys from an angle in the front, rare occasions from the back and with wolf tactics it changed anyway, but since I am attacking alone in this game that doesnt count.

I mean the defense for this particular convoy is standard, a DD in front a DD on each side and a rear DD, so my approach is trying to either come from the side that the convoy is "leaning" to and make sure to approach way in front of the side DD to make sure he doesnt detect me, but also make sure that the front DD doesnt detect me. I watch careful and slowly creeping closer to my targets, but like i said before the side DD catches me all the time and 1 time the front DD detected me.

Then I tried to attack after the side DD past my boat, but usually thats not such a great idea since now I need increased speed to get closer to the targets and in my case the back DD found me and I had to destroy the damn thing with a magnetic torp.

Flashmax77: I don't play GWX but there is a sticky on subsim that helps explain sonar. Perhaps you will find it usefull.
I can tell you even through trial and error, and trying not to mess up ever since I started using WAC I have never made it into/through `43, ever. This is why in carrer mode I usually start in `39.

Thanks for the info danurve. I will look into it, going to try out WAC mod as well and see how that works out.

Just setup WAC, looks good, fab graphics and gameplay, plus good realism. Still checking it out, am impressed atm, may stay with WAC a while now.

@Flashmax77: My experience is that you should only keep your periscope only a short period above waterline - if you keep it "surfaced" too long, then they will physically see your scope and come for you. Also its much safer to go with silent running. This works for me. Im playing GWX latest patch.

When that is stated, I am very cautious with the convoys with 4 destroyers (one on each side)... They are dangerous http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif But, when there are only one, or two protectors of the convoy, I tend to take more risks when approaching.

Cheers,

Remember, in reality, the u-boats field of vision was restricted due to their low height. Destroyers lookouts were up much higher and could therefore see much further.
Stay 10k's away at least, when in close and submerged stay on silent, reduce speed to two knots, only put your scope up at 30second intervals, shoot all four for'd fish, then turn and run deep and silent.
After you are 10k's away, you can go back to standard running, reload, then go back in again.
Remember, as a destroyer, you were always at action stations on escort duty. As a uboat, never attack a convoy in daylight hours, stalk them if you have fuel, or just resign yourself to having the opportunity lost.
Good luck guys, I use gwx at 96%, and use these tactics to attack. I'm still alive at 8 patrols, so it's not impossible
