View Full Version : What would you like to see in a UP 2.0 campaign?

I've kind of got the campaign-making bug again but I'm not really sure what to do. I'd really like to make one that takes advantage of what is in UP 2.0--the maps, new planes, etc--but I'd like to ask if anyone here has some ideas.

So far I've done some work on one that would be a 1946 sort of thing where Russia and Germany are still battling it out in Crimea. I have several missions with the Do-335 doing stuff like intercepting Il-10's and attacking convoys. Then I have some other missions with the Bf-109 K-14 which is quite a fun plane, it really feels very like a fast beast compared to other 109's and it has two 20mm cannons built into the wing so overall it has 3 cannons and 2 MG's which is quite nice for dogfighting and intercepting Russian attack aircraft.

I suppose I could go for jets eventually but I'm not crazy about the faster jets in Il-2 mainly because if you fly against AI jets, they can zoom all over the place at top speed without blacking out, whereas if you are flying above a certain speed, almost any movement causes a blackout which makes it really hard to do dogfighting.

Oh and after UP 2.0 came out I made three mini-campaigns set in the MTO, one where you fly a Bf-109E tropical version, another where you fly a Tomahawk, and another where you fly a Bf-110. It's nothing complicated but I put in some of the new stuff like Fairey Battles, Fulmars and Swordfishes so there is new stuff to shoot at. I must confess I have no idea what 'UP' is. Those missions sound cool though.

UP = UltraPack (mods).

Any chance of a few missions where you fly the Fulmar, Ba5tatd5word? It isn't fast, but it is tough and well-armed. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but maybe worth a try. A nice plane to learn deck landing too...

I'm not crazy about how the Fulmar doesn't have its own pit (yet) and only has .30 cals. But in my Bf-110 mini-campaign I made a mission where you fly a Bf-110 against Fulmars, which is quite fun and intense, they are a good matchup against one another.

Indeed, the Fulmar is far more maneuverable but the Bf-110 is faster and more heavily armed... Actually I found fighting the fulmar in the 110 quite tough.

So I would suggest you release both single missions and mini campaigns that you have on M4T, there is never enough variety.

Personally, I like short campaigns, because I like to explore the variety Il-2 has to offer... 80 mission epics in the 109 don't do it for me...

So I was gonna suggest MTO with fulmars, swordfishes and Italian fighters, looks like you've covered that to an extent.

Another idea I had was a 1948 Berlin blockade gone messy, Russian fighters getting aggressive and smoking the transports, both early jet fighters and piston fighters mixing up, perhaps throw in some captured luftwaffe planes, or even a re-armed luftwaffe fighting the soviets. Not quite world war three, but a very hot incident ultimately ended with cautious diplomacy...

The plane set could be very interesting: P-51s, Spitfire XIVs, P-80s, Fw-190D, Me-262, He-162, B-29 vs Yak-9U, La-7, I-250, Yak-15, Tu-2 and all kinds of transports.

Actually there is a similar effort on M4T that came out recently, but i thought i'd brainstorm away anyway! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

Yup, I've just tried Fulmar vs early Bf-110 (both ways) on the QMB. Not easy. The AI Fulmar will get into tight scissors if you get slow and close, which takes some dealing with in the 110, you will end up hanging right on the edge of a stall trying to get a shot.

I don't think the Hurri pit the Fulmar uses at the moment looks too bad, though a proper one would be nice.

Well when I get the chance I'll put the MTO mini-campaigns on M4T I guess. I'm not really good at setting up ground attack missions though so the Bf-110 missions don't really work the way they wanted to.

Anyway I think I'll keep working on the 1946 stuff, some of the missions are pretty fun. I would like to get some American and British planes in there like the Sea Fury maybe towards the end of it.

Well I have stuck with the 1946 theme and I currently have 9 missions ready, they are pretty fun and I polished them up some though they still need some work and briefings. It starts out with the Do-335 V-13 (the one with two extra cannons in the wing) then you get a Bf-109K-14 later on, and I'm not sure what else I'd like to put in or what other planes to do. I'm not really sure what the intended role of the Do-335 was, I know it was meant for bombing and as a heavy fighter but I'm not really sure which was intended to be more prevalent. It works pretty well as a fighter, especially against bombers, and it can hold its own against piston fighters because of its extreme high speed. It's not great at turning but its armament is great so you only need one good burst to get a kill. The Bf-109K-14 meanwhile was apparently a proposed high-altitude fighter, but in these missions I have it serving at sea level and it flies great, very fast, good at turning at any speed and good armament. I didn't know the K-14 was meant for high altitude until today when I looked it up on wikipedia so maybe I'll put in the K-6 instead, which is similar but a bit slower and also it has three 30mm cannons whereas the K-14 has three 20mm cannons with I think more ammo.

Here are the missions I have so far:

1) Fly Do-335's against some Il-10's escorted by La-7's

2) Fly Do-335's against unescorted Il-10's

3) Fly Do-335's to intercept and shoot down a bunch of escorted Li-2 cargo planes (kaboom!)

4) Fly Do-335's against 8 Pe-8 bombers at high altitude

5) Fly your Do-335's from Western Kuban to the eastern tip of Crimea and get intercepted by some pesky La-7's

6) Fly Do-335's and attack some convoys on a road, this is fun--the Do-335 is great against trucks because its 30mm cannons have great splash damage.

7) Fly Bf-109K-14's in advance of Do-335 bombers to clear their path, and shoot down enemy Yak-3's and La-7's to protect your Jabo buddies.

8) Fly Bf-109K-14's and fight off a large group of incoming escorted Pe-2's and Il-10's, with help from Fw-190D's and Bf-109's in the area.

9) Fly Bf-109K-14's and fight it out with a larger number of LaGG-3 RD jet fighters, this can get pretty intense.

That is just too easy B55. (how do you abbreviate Ba5tard5word?). Of course you could spice it up a bit by putting them in a cloud layer. Mission builders seldom seem to do this, but it can add a level of difficulty, especially if you are keen on fast diving attacks. That way, the 'kaboom' may be you colliding with the target...

Well they are escorted by La-7's and there are several Li-2's so it's easy to run out of ammo on them. It's kind of a mad dash to shoot them all down without running out of ammo while being harrassed by La-7's, plus it kind of lets you let off some steam after shooting at Il-10's, which are frustratingly tough to shoot down even with three 30mm cannons. Often the Il-10 pilots will bail out and the plane will keep flying up and off into the horizon, which is annoying because I have destroy targets set on them.

Yes, bleeding annoying that. I think TD might be able to fix that one in a future patch without having to reprogram the entire AI (at least, I hope so). I'll post a suggestion on the 1C:Maddox TD thread...

Actually I think for that mission against the Li-2's I will use the Do-335A which only has 1 30mm cannon and 2 20mm ones, the V-13 kills the Li-2's in one shot so it was a bit too easy. I just tried it again though and was doing pretty well but then an La-7 snuck up on me and made my plane blow in half. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

You have some Bf-109's under your control that you can order to follow you then to attack the La-7's but they aren't always reliable.

If I get the chance I'll try it tomorrow, B55. The Do-355 is an interesting plane to fly, and would probably have been a serious problem for the allies if it had been introduced into service earlier.

Well I've got 12 missions made so far though some of the newer ones are more skeleton stuff. I'm thinking of introducing American and British planes into the mix too, like one mission where the Royal Navy has gotten into the Black Sea and sends Sea Furies to attack German forces near Odessa. I have some requests for advice though...

a) What was the intended role of the Do-335, mainly for bombing or was it also intended as an all-around fighter? Or more for anti-bomber missions? The Do-335 we have in Il-2 is quite fast and has great weaponry, and can hold its own in a dogfight, but isn't great at turning and its easy to lose a turn battle against more nimble La-7's or whatever. It's quite good against Il-10's or other Russian bombers because of its strong weaponry. Most of my mission are where you shoot down bombers or transport planes, but there is one where you get intercepted by some Russian fighters and have to tangle with them. There is one ground attack mission but again I'm not really sure what sort of role the Do-335 should focus on.

b) I'm kind of wondering if people will be annoyed if I use the Bf-109K-14 for sea level missions. Apparently it was intended as a high-altitude fighter, but it's quite a bit faster than the K-6 at sea level and feels a lot better at turning even at high speeds, plus that 4-blade prop just looks cool. I could use the K-6 I guess but the K-14 is more fun to fly.

It was first designed as a fast bomber, then an interceptor, but there were plans to have it operate in a variety of combat roles.

As long as your campaign is entertaining, and it certainly appears to be, it won't really matter how the aircraft are used. Since you are creating a what-if scenario, one would be hard pressed to be disappointed to use a K14 at low altitude.

Don't worry about 'messing up' the aircraft roles, it happened in real life all the time: Ta-152s saw action mostly at low altitudes, and Dora-9s were used as fighter bombers towards the end, so no problem there.

Well, cases of aircraft being used for other roles than they were designed for was hardly unusual during WWII: P-47 for ground attack, anyone? I think my favourite is the Spits used to carry beer-barrels after the D-Day landings... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll try and work on this some more when I get the chance, I've been going through each mission and polishing them up which takes a while.

And the Spanish Civil War would be a hoot now that we have the Cartagena map, the Hs-123 and early Bf-109's and I-15 and early I-16 variants. I think I like doing what-if scenarios because it frees me up from having to do research into where the frontlines on the maps were at different times during the actual war...maybe I'll look into it though, I have no idea what would be a good way to divvy up the Cartagena map or what sorts of scenarios were common.
