There I was preparing to run into Loch Ewe to see if I could find a warship when a task force practically ran me down. (The Illustrious and 2 Revenge class BB's along with 6 DD's for an escort.) I managed to get off two salvos at the lead Revenge and the Illustrious, but the Revenge made a turn after I fired. My two fish intended for her missed, but she took the fish I shot at the Illustrious. Two fish and down she went. Even managed to limp away without fatal damage!

Made my cruise! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Task Forces are just an old wives tale. Been playing for months and haven't seen one. No mermaids either.

I had come across the task force. Three DD and three capital ships. I had not torpedos in the tub of mine. I could only sit and drool. They are out there!

The only one I ever saw was just a bit out of position. I couldn't catch up. It was Jan 1940 I think. The biggest ship was a Nelson.

I saw one a while ago and it scared the **** out of me. All of the sudden, out of nowhere, came about a dozen red lines on my map.

I've encountered two. The problem with task forces is that the majority of them are composed of nothing but warships, and move so fast that unless you are pretty much right on their path already, you can't get into an attack position. The first one I encountered was a Nelson battleship and 7 assorted destroyers. The second one was nothing but 3 Black Swan frigates.

From what I've seen by looking at the scripting files, the Task Forces usually have much larger spawn intervals than convoys do. A lot of convoys spawn every week, while most task forces are 21 day intervals. The one real exception seems to be the Hunter Killer groups, which are 48 hour intervals.

Ze reason ze task forzes ztay avay izz zhat zey fear our JU-boats vhich are exztremely dangzeroos too zhem.

BTW never had a go at one myself. Only radio report I ever got was about one 'round the northern tip of Norway.

I was chasing what later revealed itself to be an armed trawler leaving Freetown.

Ya, I ran into one last night, 2 V&Ws, 2 Clemson, 2 HuntIIIs all escorting the middle ships...2 Fiji light cruiser and 1 Dido light cruiser.

I ran into a TF north of Scapa Flow early in 1940,I was in perfect position-they were coming right towards me at over 20 knots.I put a salvo of 4 under the keel shots with a 2 degree spread into a Nelson BB,3 hits from bow to stern and it just kept on going, albeit a bit lower in the water.I was sick.

Sorry I have been away for a few days. That was my first task force in 3 careers. It was a really nice surprise! http://members.cox.net/billandjaime/SH3Img@17-8-2005_18.34.15_134.bmp

I've only encountered 3 task forces in a single career. All were between 41-43. Two were west of Ireland, one was north of northern Africa (on the way to Gibraltar). I've seen no major capital ships, but I did get to sink two escort carriers and a liner (all in separate task forces).

It was a first and last for me too. In 3 careers this is the first one I have ever seen, unless you count the one that was just a convoy with an auxilliary cruiser in it. That really let me down hard!

I started my campaign in 1939 and am now in May of 1944...To date I've actually intercepted two Task Forces...

The last task force I chased after I was hoping to see a battleship or an aircraft carrier...Heck even a Cruiser would've been great...But all I got was 4 destroyers and one sunk Uboat to show for that!

My first Task force encounter was in the Fall of 1943 between Norway and Iceland...Eventhough it had a big battleship...I just couldn't bring myself to sink it...Mainly because it was an Axis task force with a Bismarck class and a Admiral Hipper class with 4 Destroyer escorts...

A beautiful sight indeed! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I came across my first TF just the other night west of Scapa Flow (is that the right name?) ... had a fleet carrier and a Nelson battleship. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The sad part? Only one torpedo left. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

I set it to the magnetic detonator (assuming that one torp on impact wouldn't sink it) but the carrier was at medium range, at best, and whizzed by so fast that I missed altogether (I like to think that it was a dud).

I already encountered several taskforces, but the only two that are worth mentioning are:

- A taskforce with 1 bogue flattop and about 8 destroyers. Can't remember where I met them butI was in a bad position anyway, so I couldn't attack http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

- A taskforce with 1 King George V BB and 10 Destroyers that left Gibraltar to the Atlantic. I even managed to fire 4 Torpedos at the BB but they all exploded halfway to the target because http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

I know what you mean, but my humble experience got even better. Upon returning from this patrol, I was transfered to the 2nd Flotilla and was given command of the U-802, a type IXC. To give the newer crewmembers some experience and to test the detectability of my new boat I went back to Loch Ewe. Expecting to find the obligatory Fiji I was stunned to find the Illustrious which I had damaged on my previous patrol docked for repairs. (I am sure the two occurrences are totally unrelated, but it sure added some realism for me.)
Of course, I had to finish the job, and my new boat's first kill was the Illustrious. There was also a nice T3 sitting there alongside which made for a nice target too.

Voodoo, your little group with the Bogue carrier and the destroyers? That was a Hunter Killer group. That's the usual composition, 1 escort carrier and 4-8 destroyers. The later the war gets, the more of those groups there are. They really extend the air coverage in the late war.

TF's are something you see when you stare at the screen too long. It's really a bunch of small merchants with attitudes.

Was it? Okay then I'll no longer be disappointed that I couldn't attack them, but instead I'll be happy that they didn't attack me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Sorry, don't have the date and time, but it was just out of Loch Ewe, I think some time in late 1939. I was out of torpedos so I couldn't do a thing. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Either you're a troll or an idiot. They are rare but they exist. Why don't you open up the campaign.scr file in the mission builder and look for yourself?

I found a taskforce yesterday docked in Loch Ewe. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
A Fiji, a Bogue and the Illustrious, and ofcourse a load of DD's. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
And the best thing was that after I torpedoed the Illustrious the Brits even gave me time to reload my tubes and I was even allowed to dock in their port to load the external tubes. British hospitality? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

A lovely little Fiji, just waiting for me.

Ok, but maybe they should be up there more often? I mean it is acceptable that you rarely get task force messages, because those secrets are harder to obtain, however it still leaves the impression that the task force movements where extreemly scarce. In this situation the germans woundn't have to hesitate sending thier warships to bombard the english ports and naval bases down to the ground. Good old tiny destroyers woudn't stop them.

On waters with high british naval presence accidentally bumping on a task force shouldn't be a miracle.

I meet a Task force just north of Malta 3 BBs and 6DDs, two of the BBs got 2 torps each, all were hits and they both sunk faster then some of the merchant shpis I came across...

I'd hesitate alright. RAF was never defeated and the reserves were held in the north of the country. A bunch of of german capital ships there would be suicide for the Kriegsmarine.
