I don't know what to say, except why'd it take so long to get to the Ohio Valley? This is very cool, and thanks to all who posted before, while I was lurking, (yez, I lurk http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif ) who helped me to decide to buy the game.

Advice: If you get the game, and your DVD code is on the inside of the box . . . <span class="ev_code_RED">DO NOT</span> enter anything from the second line; The code is only 25 characters long. However it looks for the life of you that the second line is a continuation of the code, and not just some BS to be used by the Starforce people.

The game is awesome. The birds are flying around everywhere. The water is beautiful, and the entire game remeinds me of B-17, Flying Fortress, The Mighty 8th. Everything is very smooth, FR-wise, as well. Gameplay is great! I'm the captain of a freakin' U-boat! I really feel it. Great combination sim/strategy game. This is what I expect when I see Strategic Simulations on the box. Very pleased with my purchase (copy protection BS is a mandatory PIA, I guess), and recomend it highly to all you patch crazed pixel-pilots out there, as a temporary distraction.

I know, I know . . . this new game is old news to all you peeps in the civilized world. Here, we have to pipe in the sunshine, I suppose.

Terrific Game!

I just got SH3 about 2 hours ago and my CD drives won't even show it in the drive! I am vexed, well and truly!

I was pretty happy with it. I've heard a few complaints about it, but I find it to be great fun, and intense at times. Gameplay is smooth as glass for me. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Uh Oh, Civildog . . .

If you bought the dvd version, you won't be able to install from a cd rom drive. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

See if you can exchange it for the cd version, uh . . . if that's available . . . and if that's your problem.

Good Luck, Buddy

Altstiff,
I think that I am a good while from that first kill, yet. Still playing the training games, but the training is actually fun, and not boring. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah...I just noticed that myself. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Now the question is: do I get a copy of the CD, or use this as a crafty excuse to add a DVD drive???

Hmmmm....the possibilities.....

OK, I'll get the DVD DL combo burner. It's been at least 2 months since my last upgrade so I've been itching to open my case.

I've always thought submarine games were the perfect single-player PC game. Just me against the evil puter, no need for flashy graphics...just good sound and hunched over the monitor with my headphones on tracking the targets...

Too bad we can't all link up and play Wolfpack against the Atlantic convoys live.

Great stuff Tsiqua!!!!

I say, go for flot1 and sink some of those poor defenless British Merchant ships http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Took 6 patrols before I finaly met a British Destroyer, in the Spring of 1941 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif. I thought it was a trawler, so I surfaced.... and it opened fire.
CRASH DIVE!!!!!!!!!!

I got him http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Also, for fun, go to 1943 and try to get into the Med http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Ha ha ha! I felt the same way, Ibis. Then I dl'd a movie, and read what other community members had said about the game. You'll never stop wishing for wings, but the first time you pan the camera down beneath the water . . . hit F12 button for a "fly by" view, then pan down with the number pad (why am I telling you this? you don't have the game, yet! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) My God! When that monstrous machine goes rumbling by like an underwater locomotive you will get excited! You have the equivilent of CEM in the game; control of EVERYTHING! I have tried maretime games before, but this one really takes the prize from them all!!! Nothing else has ever been quite this good.

A little history that this game has taught me already:

(from the manual)

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> . . . (when) the war ends . . . the U-boat fleet is all but wiped out, 30,000 of its 40,000 men . . . died at sea. Still, fighting hard but fair, they have acomplished success beyond all expectations and out of proportion to their strength. At some points during the war, they had come close to bringing the British Empire to its knees.

On the allied side, the cost of victory has been even higher. more than 30,000 merchant seamen have been lost in this struggle, along with many thousands of servicemen from all branches of the military. About 20 million tons of merchant tonnage lies under the sea.

And the emotional cost of the war has been even greater.

. . . This game pays homage (to) everyone - Allied or Axis - who served at sea during the crucial years of WWII. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Can somebody please give me advice on this? I've never been interested in maritime games, but I watched a trailer and it looks pretty good! What is the style of play e.g. do you click to the next room or something like that? Is it very fast paced or slow paced? Is it complicated?

Better get me excited, potential buyer here http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

PS need to do a lot of convincing, never looked twice at a maritime game lol

Cheers guys

Ubisoft, you should love me for this http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes, you can click from one room to the other, and sit at all of the stations if you wish. Long distance travel is shortened, time-wise, by a time compression feature, but you have the option of leaving it in real time if you wish . . . I will doing some work around here while travelling to target area today. If I am not at the target by the time I am finished, I'll just plot the course for the navigator, and use the NP + and - keys to travel there in seconds.

In B-17 The Mighty 8th[, the crew would move and behave as real crewmen . . . this is just the same. You can send a crewman to another station, and interact with them via a menu that is different for each crewman.

Another thing that is similar to the B-17 game is the menu that is autohidden on the side of the screen. There are a number of ways to achieve the same results when it comes to commands and views. Lots to do, and lots of ways to do it.

Trust me, this is not a boring game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

For normal navigation, you can set the compass heading, and the helmsman will take that as an order: "Yes Sir . . . new heading, bla bla bla". For tight navigation (I just saw a screenie of a U-boat navigating under a bridge http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif), you can take manual control of the rudders. You can also plot a long course on the map, and the ship will follow your course. If you use time compression, and get close to an enemy, it will turn of the the TC, and you now have an enemy to face. Wheeeeeee!

One warning to this game if I may.

Be prepared for a very loooong learning curve. There are seemingly infinate options for you to track even on easy settings.

I have not given it due time yet. But I will soon.

With that said, it is very "immersive"! Sorry, I couldn't resist. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

Anybody who is posting on these boards and playing IL2FBAEPPF is definitely NOT afraid of steep learning curves !

NorrisMcWhirter
04-05-2005, 02:23 PM
Hi,

I wouldn't say this game had a particularly steep learning curve - after my second patrol, I'd sunk 38,000 tonnes (mostly, I might add, courtesy of a nice fat passenger liner) of shipping with the realism above 80%. Then again, it is 1941 so I should expect a relatively easy ride.

What is easier than SH2 is evading the escorts - in that game, you rarely managed to get away whereas in SH3, it seems that you can properly use your aspect etc to bamboozle the enemy hydrophones and asdic - this makes a big difference.

Apart from that, the game is fantastic what with the crew management, unbelievable sea and weather effects and the dynamic crew. Nothing like taking the boat down to 200m and watching the crew get really shifty about being close to critical depth. Each creak just seems to upset them all the more!

SH3 easily has more immersion than Il-2 in _single player_.

Cheers,
Norris

Got to agree SHIII has an incredible amount to offer and it is online multiplayer aswell! I've been playin it and nothing else since it came out, totally engrossing stuff...But take warning it still needs a bit longer on the " bug ironing board" if you know what I mean http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
