So, ive returned to IL-2 and after some faffing around in the nice new quick mission builder ive started FSM's Condor legion campaign.

#Spoilers of campaign#

It starts off nicely, with you as a rookie pilot learning to fly and there are a few missions that have you pottering about - which is perfect for me to get some practice in. Particularly nice touches are the rookie pilots messing up landings around you and the use of ambulances + fires to simulate crashes. It does make you feel like its a training school.

Despite the rust, i managed to take off and land in an..... acceptable, if not entirely perfect manner.

After this, you have a mission that has you buzzing the wrong people and results in you getting booted to a mountain base to watch for smugglers along the border.

This sets in place a few entertaining missions that have you intercepting smugglers attempting to cross the border. Low flying in the valleys make this an interesting exercise.

My only complaints are that in at least one of the missions, the enemy planes are nowhere near where you are told to fly. Whether this is intentional im not sure. Im not ruling out me misunderstanding/messing up.

Finally, we make it to spain - even if the towns sound slightly more russian than i remember http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

One mission starts with a surprise raid on your airfield. I say surprise, because within seconds of starting bombs are falling on you! Three missions in a row i was blown up before i could start up the engine, much less take off. I eventually managed to survive by bravely baling out and taking cover.

I don't know if that was intentional or not, but its an interesting start nonetheless.

Next mission is about revenge - escorting bombers to their target. However, i decided that they could handle themselves and elected to bounce a flight of 6 enemy bombers that crossed our paths. Surprisingly they all went down, though i was tagged in the fuel tank and out of cannon ammo. I decided to go home and call it a day. But it wasn't over yet!

Just as the airbase was in sight i ran into 3 I-16'S. They proved to be more difficult than the bombers and tagged my engine. I tried to lure them over my home base in the hope that flack would hit or shake them off but they were determined to finish me off.

After desperately trying to avoid being hit for a few mins they backed off - just as my engine died!! Through a supreme stroke of luck, i managed to land - abet in a haphazard manner- with a dead engine.

The fact that i ran off the end of the runway is neither here nor there http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif And so ended my flying for the day.

#end spoilers#

Highlights:
-Inventive missions
-Excellent briefings
-Nice and varied

Lowlights:
-Rust
-Possible problems with mission markers
-rust!! (and I-16'S)

I don't know if FSM is still about, but if he is, then cheers mate im having a lot of fun. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

69.GIAP is running an online SEOW campaign of the Battle for Malaga on staurday nights against JG27+ZG26 at 21:00 CET.

The classic mix of I16, I15 and what is now an excellent collection of 1930s bombers against early 109s, stukas, Fiats and Savoia Machetti has made it well worth revisiting the Spanish Civil war.
