Was surfing around the Web looking at stuff about the Lagg-3 when I noticed something odd. There is many interpatations on what the Laggs primary armament was http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif What exactly was the standard armament of the Lagg? Some sources say it was armed with two 7.62 ShKas and one ShVak.While others say it was two .50 UB and one ShVak...What was it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
Or was the armament of the Lagg such that it could be changed and modified in the field to suit the taste of the pilot? This make me scratch my head as many of the armament "configs" that I have read about aren't in the game.Could someone clarify this for me.Thx

LaGG armament wasn't (of course) the same for all versions.
It is possible that LaGG subvariants get mixed up, so some incorrect armament is mentioned.

However so far I have not found anything that would suggest that in game LaGG armament is incorrect in gun type/subvariant.

There was no "standard" armarment for the LaGG-3. It differed a lot from subversion to subversion. Only the later models like series 66 had something like a standard armarment of 1x12.7mm UBS and 1x20mm ShVAK.

Any combo possible:
none or one or two (or three or four?) 7.62mm guns
none or one or tow or three 12.7mm guns
none or one 20mm or 23mm or 37mm gun.

So in other words, the Lagg's armament could be changed around or what have you in the field as circumstances permitted?I understand that it changed from varient to varient, and confusion would seem likely as there is ALOT of varients of the Lagg.

Given the situation during the early years of the GPW I would expect planes were armed with whatever weapons were available at their time of manufacture. The most important part for the Russian defence forces would have been getting aircraft into the air, to counter the enemy's bombers and escorting fighters - so the late arrival of a batch of one weapon might have been ignored if another (albeit inferior) was available.
Up-grading in the field probably happened quite frequently too - more often than we will know, with many logs & records lost in the fighting.

Hydra444 the Lagg 3 firepower depended on what series you are talking about. Even in the same series the set up would not always be the same. (Field Mods) According to my copy of Lagg Fighters in Action Armament by series is as follows...
Series 1 Three 12.7mm MG's and Two 7.62 MG's
Series 4 Usually One 20mm cannon, One 12.7mm mg and two 7.62's. Note some very early Lagg series 4 same as series 1. (Note Series 4 in the game is a early series 4 but still with a 20mm cannon)
Series 8,11,29,35 and 66 One 20mm Cannon and One 12.7mm MG
Note some sub variants could use the 23 mm Cannon in place of the 20mm one. Also info on the 37mm Cannon (With one 12.7mm MG) success depends on where you look. Lagg Fighters in action lists the 37mm armed versions (Series 34) as a wash at best due to the change in the center of gravity in the Lagg from the standard versions plus fuselage damage from recoil. The biggest complaints you see about the Lagg on these forums is about it's damage model. I find the Lagg easy enough to down in spite of the super Delta Wood remarks you see here.

Afaik the series 4 we have has 2x shkas, 2x ubs, 1x shvak.. quite heavy armament.. however, in real life only few of these series 4-Laggs existed, usually it was 2x shkas and one 20mm simply to save weight. Lagg series 4 was allready badly underpowered..

Field Mods were fairly common in the VVS so stripping a series 4 Lagg would have been fairly common. After all the VVS was known for field mods with the P39 and IL2. Heck we have a IL2 field mod as a flyable. The Lagg I wish we had was the series 1 version. (No Cannons) The series one version were faster and better made also the majority of pilots had the early Lagg 3's canopy removed leaving just the windshield. Oleg's Lagg 3's are the better made ones, factory specs.

Cool stuff guys. Thanks http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Was just something I'd been wondering for sometime now, since the original IL2.I find the Lagg to be an amazing aircraft in spite of all that is written about it.Looking at its performance statistics as it evolved,it eventually became a very formibable fighter in its own right,I feel.
