Hello all,
I was just wondering who you think was the greatest online pilot of all time. My vote goes to goodknight love him or hate him, I think he really earned his self appointed title- the ace of aces. Have you seen his ownage videos six fifties and butchered? Those two vids were what really sealed the deal for me. He also flew full real and we all know that friends don't let friends fly arcade. He also seemed to have an innate mastery of every airplane and wasn't limited to only one bird. I think a close second would be jimmygiro but gk, dare i say, was transhuman.

I'm not familiar with that pilot name. Please don't post no-namers. I think I would actually pay money to watch Viks and Gk duke it out. Anyone got any links to sixfifties or butchered?

Well my pick would be the same than yours, namely GoodKnight and JimmyGiro. But there's a bloke I occasionally fly with who's a baaad mofo as well - his AFW K/D ratio was something like 50/1 at one point I think http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Can't name names, though, because I'm not at all sure how he'd take his name being mentioned in public. Sorry 'bout that...

Actually the very best virtual pilot would be ME. If I flew online.
The reason I dont fly online, and this may surprise you...Is that I am a sensitive kind hearted guy. And after awhile it just wouldnt be any fun to be the only person on the server, because as soon as I joined people would be tearing out their hair, bailing out, calling their therapists. being an ace of aces, of aces, is a diffacult proposition. The men shun me and the women adore me. But once witnessed my superb skills are never questioned.
I just want everyone to have fun and if I were to go online it would be the end of HL be sure.
Most people mistakenly only focus on one kill at a time, where as I prefer to take out squadrons with one sweeping burst.
If anyone does perform the miricle of getting on my six, I have a couple of dazzling manuvers to turn the tables. First I would do one of those Emmlenman thingys, and when that didnt work I would do my patented 'inverted double S slide to the side, with an order of fries' move, and the show would be over. When I start breaking out with moves like this even the AI surrenders, or runs away like the cowards they are.
Perhaps one day soon I will make an appearance on HL, but please dont worry folks, I will just come to do a fly through, maybe wag my wings to the crowds, or maybe even do a barrelroll, you know, ham it up a little for my fans. Now please dont start flaming me, cause I will just say you are jealous of my mastery of the skys, and put some of the bad non smilies in my response too, so there!

A$$ of aces, of aces,
Spitter of fire,
And as my wife fondly calls me
"Master of the obvious"(She likes me!) http://media.ubi.com/us/forum_images/gf-glomp.gif
I apoligize in advance for being so good, but I cant help it I guess Im just a natural. Its cool though I can handle being the best as well as anyone.
Dag
PS
Thinking of changing my nic to something cool like 'Master Blaster", or 'AI crusher", or 'Im on yer six sucka'. I want something catchy, that dosent spoil my macho image, or make me look too egotistical. I must maintain my modesty you know.

THE AI FEARS ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Damn cowards.

I've flown with and against both Goodknight and JimmyGiro. Both rate as the best back in the old days. Since you don't see either it's hard to say now. Each patch and addon has changed alot of thngs, FM and DM. Yeah Goodknight could be irritating but honestly..I liked him.

I think there is alot of parity online now. Alot of really good pilots out there..of course lately with the hacks and mods it's hard to really say who is best cause you have no idea who is cheating and who isn't. Other than people you know and trust.

I don't think there is any competition..

Chuck Norris once shot down a German fighter plane with his finger, by yelling, "Bang!"

Definately disagree with AI gunners, granted they can make amazing snap shots from time to time, but on the other hand they can be incredibly stupid way to often; you can park your plane right next to B-17 and the gunners won't fire..

I'm guessing almost all the best pilots fly more in the style of Hartmann, atleast on populated servers with 30+ people. Actually, I can see the best pilots using both styles, I suppose if you are in a one on one or low numbers engagement and you are relativley sure the sky is empty in all directions beside what you are engaging (a rarity) then you can probably go Marseille on someones ***. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

S!,
The best virtual pilots are those that save my a$$ on a daily basis. The best gunner in the game doesn't mean a hill of beans to me if he's only flying for stats and glory. Don't get me wrong, I've been around long enough to see some very, very good pilots, but those pilots I consider the best are those pilots that make a difference for the team and are not concerned about chest thumping, of which, JimmyGyro(chestthumping, that is) isn't one of them. However, on any given day or night, anyone can take down an 'ace' http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Everytime I see these kind of thread I think..."well it's all about an ace wannabe looking for recognition"

but after seeing the GK video, I oughta say this, if not the best, he's one of the best

PROS:
1. he actually share his style, like an ace-school
2. uses the 190
3. flies in full-real servers

CONS:
1. uses trackir, everything it's easier with tir

What this (the video) show is that he is a mk108 B&Z junky.... shoot BOOM... shoot BOOM... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

Try doing this in a Spitty (or Mustang)... shoot... still flying... shoot some more.... still flying... ok a few more hits... damm 190's still flying... dropping the hammer.... Oh now he goes down... on average 15-25 hits to bring down a 190.... LOL Reminds me of one of my few sorties in a 190 on WC.... flew a bit.. saw a Spit... lined him up... squeeze of a few 108's... Spitty goes BOOOOM (only 1 mk108 hit lol)... flew somemore... saw a Spitt... few more 108's.... BOOOOMMM he's out of there..... saw a 3rd Spit.... shoot... then BOOOMMMMM.... then a P-38.... got on his six.... shoot a few rounds ..... tailboom fell off.... RTB... changed back to my Spitt... as flying a A9 is well... unchallenging.... WHEN YOU STICK TO ENERGY TACTICS....

And btw we don't really see any instance where he as someone on him.... I think the best test for a pilot... is how fast he can shake one of his six.... because even if you are using B&Z... eventually someone will have more E then you... and this is when you may not be getting home....

Everybody's beatable...period.

Conditions of engagement are so relative that every engagement is different.

Most who have been around any length of time could conglomerate a series of clips from myriad engagements showing enemy aircraft falling to bits at their superior gunnery. Instead of watching those and using them as instructive (because they ARE entertaining at least) I'd rather be able to watch the entire track sometime. Sure much more boring, but it tells the whole tale...be sure. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

I've flown with and against most all of the online virtuosos. I've held a positive K/D ratio against most (including Goodkn1ght and his wingman Gutted), but day in and day out if Pipper was in his Yak and the odds were fairly even, he would pwn. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/touche.gif

Lets say a guy flew in an online war like VWF "Virtual Western front". Planeset: 109G6 and 190As vs MkIX,P38,51,47 (no late 47 and 38 in this patch tho). Uninterrupted streak of 192 missions with 200+ kills. Got all medals including swords and diamonds. For the last like 100 missions it was mostly about shooting him down for the entire opposing team rather than going for mission targets.

How would you rate this guy?

P.S. no, it was not me.

I wouldn't bother.....That alone means little as I have flown with folks in those wars who "gamed the game".....IOW, they rarely flew the assigned mission leaving their teammates out to dry, also cheated the enemy as in some of those wars they are like coops, so a predetermined meeting is to take place. In kind often letting their teammates be slaughtered using them as bait, then swooping in back from the action killing cripples as they rtb'd or at the least letting their own get hammered as they watched and waited for the enemy to blow E.

Now not saying who you propose did this, yet I've seen it often. Frankly, out for their own acclaim while sacrificing their own for those numbers.

So without having seen how the person flew, and knowing whether or not they flew to the constraints and rules of that war/mission...It's impossible to say....Could be the ace of aces, or could be a rule breaking team & war sacrificing glory hound vulcher. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Hi there,

It is interesting that =FB=Viks came up just now after 3 pages.

He most probably is the winner here. It is just incredible what he was/is capable of in 1v1, 2v2 or online war.

Sad that =FB= don't fly nowadays on online wars.

I miss that deep fear http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, I managed to get over 100 kills in Bellum war doing this also participating in ground attack (which is much more dangerous obviously than dogfighting), so it's quite possible to archieve over 200 kills if one only concentrates on dogfighting.

Didn't want to sound arrogant, but my point was as good as Viks is/was (probably the best 1vs1 dogfighter), it's still a one man army (like Iron Man http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif). And in good old VEF-times I was much more afraid of team work squads like 3GIAP (probably the best at the time). Everyting is possible if you have a couple of good reliable wingmen, and the patience to fly the bird with her best strengths and avoid the weaknesses. Still now that you mentioned it, I don't recall anyone surpassing 200 kills in VEF/VWF/Bellum http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.. Usually a typical way to die after a long streak was a single heavy Flak killed the pilot, while flying at 7000 m full throttle http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

o´rly? His name was JZG_Kaiser, in about 50% of those missions i was his wingman. Maybe the creators of VWF can dig out the results, since the website is not availiable anymore iirc.

And yes, Viks (like Kgach) is lethal, especially in 1v1 and 2v2 scenarios. I have first hand experience of this, tho they never did VWF and only participated in eastern fron scenarios. Yet i doubt that best 1v1 dogfighter = best virtual pilot.
Its like comparing Marseille to Harmann (see other thread). Marseille died and Harmann lived, and maybe Marseille would have died anyway sooner or later like soem folks said.
My point being: go enter an online war and try to
1) contribute to the mission and team effort
2) while assessing the situation at all times and be prepared to either engage or leave fights. Decide on a tactical level, if you want to intercept at high alt or not, etc. pp.
I think it requires at least a different if not even better pilot with a huge amount of discipline to keep such a streak going.

Note: for those being curious. He was a more average (or above) guy, until he read Hartmanns famous book, did some gunnery training offline, and then strictly stuck to "go in and hit on first pass, dont allow em to engulf you in a stupid dogfight or furball. If the situation is hopeless, try to stay alive for the next sortie". Ive seen it over and over first hand that Hartmanns tactics do work, granted you have the gunnery skills.
Im not talking about some lame BnZ with endless pauses in between, which so many folks mess up with a real good tactic.
ohh, and he finally was shot in his 109G6 by a P51 AI (duhh!), sadly i didnt do my job once properly.

I'm guessing almost all the best pilots fly more in the style of Hartmann, atleast on populated servers with 30+ people. Actually, I can see the best pilots using both styles, I suppose if you are in a one on one or low numbers engagement and you are relativley sure the sky is empty in all directions beside what you are engaging (a rarity) then you can probably go Marseille on someones ***. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

The best online pilots press F2 as fast as they can. Unless external views will be universaly banned, the best gamer wins over best pilot. So talking about Hartmann or Marseille style unfortunately is misleading. For many (if not most) fighter pilots the best pilot is the one that never loses a wingman, and I don't think we have any, since we all fly of our own!!

Still, I particularly remember a japanese guy that was on the J2M3/5.I am sorry I cannot remember his name. His moves were precise and his shooting sharp.I know I am reproducing cliche, but indeed he was a samurai of the skies.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

So, then it would stand to reason that a pilot who beat both of them would be considered the best in your eyes, no? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Not everyone flies without a wingman and the tactics of aces work because they address fundamental issues of dogfighting. Saying that the best gamer wins over the best pilot depends on how you qualify that success, as you almost pointed out yourself. Nevertheless, the tricks and tools of a gamer won't win without properly applied tactics which usually have some basis in the tactics of aces.

My two cents...

The virtual pilot that has earned my respect the most (out of those I have met)...

I have seen him dogfight extremely well in any plane he climbs into.

Ask him anything about just about any plane in this sim, and he can tell you all about it...specs, limitations, strengths, weaknesses, etc...

He is an excellent wingman. I have been in a hurt many times, and he always gets me out of it.

He gave me a very strong piece of advice that I'll never forget..."Never let them make you fight their fight...Make them fight yours...on your terms...YOU be the one to decide if you want to engage or not..keep yourself in a position that you can make that decision."

He might not be the best, but he has the ultimate in respect from me.

I haven't seen him online in a few months, and I knew he had some serious surgery done a while back. I hope to see him again. Very wise man.

Hey I'm mot saying he's not good... what I'm saying is when you lob mk108 at someone and you got the timing right you will rack a lot of kills... and I'm talking about INSTANT kills...

You should know driving P47's that those 8x 50s (and even 2x 20mm + 2x50s (Spit MkIXe)) don't pack as much punch and you got to WORK more for your kill... A smoking engine on a 190 does not mean he's out of the fight (well not in VIRTUALL LAND) where poeple go kamekazee... and never underestimate the range of those MK108.... how many time I've been tag from 400-500 meters.... talk about reaching out and touching someone...

And yes anybody that as an energy advantage and is smart about it will dictate the fight... I doubt than in the situation you are talking about that it was a low down and dirty dogfight.... you guys like it up there in the stratosphere.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

But if you had two guys that really knew what they where doing and where relatively close in E... then your GK nomather how good he was... WAS DEAD... but he just did not know it yet...

My take on this is ... one disengages... climbs... the other one forces a close in dogfight.... where the objective is not to kill the badguy but keep him from regaining E.... then out of know where WHAMMMMM plane 2 comes in screaming and thats buy buy....

I never understand why two planes would stick together.... separation... and E advantage... if you or your wingman has it... the other guys is in for a rought time...

Salute Diablo, hope to see you on WC

Probably impossible to say. However, if you're looking for the model team player (and one heck of a 1 v 1 pilot), then you can't count out CIA Elanski. Best SA in the game! And he attacks targets too!

lmao...so maybe instead of arguing minutiae, just make a list.

In reality, this is much like golf. There are many who play it, but only a small percentage that are at a higher level. Singling out (or trying to single out) an individual is silly. Now, compiling a list of our magnificent 7 (or 10, or 20...) would be easier...but probably just as silly.

There's so many kinds of pilots. Good lone hunters. Good shooters. Good teamwork pilots. Good fliers. Who's the best?

My personal bet is PJK, who has so far ruled the skies in WarBirds, World War II Online and Aces High 2. Dunno how much he has flown IL-2. Neverthless, he is the best "lone hunter" type and sharpshooter I've had the pleasure to fly with, though he certainly has been just terrible in teamwork. It is not a few times when we've flown on historical scenario and suddenly kills by PJK started scrolling on screen. I like the guys in my squad. They are good pilots, try to help one and other and play fair. What else can you ask for? Each have exceptional skills and are aggressive.

There is no greatest though. That's rather a silly question, considering the variables we deal with in this sim.

I fly against exceptional pilots as well! I respect and appreciate the guys that nail me in a close encounter. I know then I must have failed somewhere, whereas they did not. There is always someone better than you. Think otherwise and you are doomed.

IMHO, WC has a very good crop of pilots and I love to fly there. So, S!, my buds on WC-WF, blue and red!

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Goodknight was a lotal looser from day one.
Jimmy...now that's a hotshot there. i've seen Jimmy do some things to some of the better pilots in this sim that'd make you go WTF.
He's just that dmmn good.

But if you wanna talk by aircraft....

the best all around 109 pilot in the sim hands down is the C/O of JG27 Aristo. John can do make a G-2 damn the freaking Mambo on the prop at 50 feet alt and still shoot you down.

Infact JG27 as a whole has some pretty good sticks on the roster.

P-47..... 310th FS C/O Diablo. when i was running the show over there @ 310, Diablo was my highest scoring pilot and he had 3 times the areial vitcories of most of the squadron.

Dora.....JV44_Rall. Rall will kill you quickly under the right siuation. I persoanly can testify to this. he attacked one of my flights one night and killed me & FK9th_Gypsy (310thGypsy @ the time) in one pass. we had just took off and we're two gids out from base on a GA mission on Warclouds. We had Us, the FK9th guys and a couple others. 7 p-38's & 3 p-47's for escourt. we had a long way to go to get to the IP. he'll we we're under 1500 M alt.
He hit ul screaming in from high 7 so fast we never knew he was there. got two swung her around and got 2 more. i was pissed to say the least. we had been winning the maps by winning targets every 15 mins or so all night.

Mustangs. despite the tags =AFJ=FatboyHK is one of the better p-51 guys around.

p-38's, Workky isn't too shabby of a lightning jock. there's few really good p-38 pilots around. i can only think of 3 or 4.

FOr ALL AROUND most DANGOURS pilot....

To be honest, I have NO idea who most of these pilots you mention are. I have of course seen their names pass me by in different forums, either mentioned by guys like yourselves, or as posters themselves. From what I can understand most of these are Americans?

I have been flying Il2 extensively since 2003 and only online, mostly on servers with full switch or similar, probably the same servers as the guys just mentioned in this thread, but I guess the time difference makes it so that we (different nationalities on different continents) seldom meet up.

I could mention quite a few European "pilots" who have my deepest respect when it comes to skill, but as someone said; it is really hard to define what is "good" - some are good turn burnerns, some are good BZ'er, some have a great SA, some make good DECISIONS (a very good quality in my book).
Also a pilot who knows how to handle inferior planes (aka cr@p planes) against rides which on paper would own the "cr@p plane", but manage to take their opponents down, or at least bring some fear into the hi rollers.

Now, the title of this thread is "Greatest online virtual pilot", and according to me, greatness is not the same thing as skillful. For me a "great pilot" possesses the following qualities (or more/similar):

-Leadership
When placed in such a position, he/she knows how to lead a group of pilots with varying skills to success in a mission.

-Decisionmaking skills
He/she knows how to make good calls when facing difficult situations, both tactically and strategically.

-Humble
He/she does not feel the urge to brag about his/her skills as a pilot, it should suffice to just have the self confidence and ability to take praise in a good fashion.

-Teamplayer
He/she is a teamplayer, knows how to guard a wingmans six, who answers calls for help, who give advice in combat, warning teammates about dangers, does NOT shouldershoot a team mate but stay on top and guard his six, and is NOT afraid to share his expericence/tips with others, and takes time to answer questions from less capable pilots.

-All around
Even if maybe it is easier to get accustomed to a certain plane type, and thus a certain way of flying, a great pilot in my book is allround. He/she knows how to handle different rides and capitalize on their particular "pros", and knows how to avoid their "cons" - including bombers.

I am lucky to be a part of a "siblinghood" group consisting of the two squadrons F19VS (http://www.f19vs.se)and F16VS (http://www.flygflottilj16.se), and I would proudly say that all of the members at least strive towards beeing great - with focus on the "qualities".

A "lone wolf" with skills gets my respect for... his skills, but the skills do not, according to me, make him "great". E.G a lone wolfer seldom risks his "virtual life" to save a team mate if the odds are against him. That is not great one bit.

So... what is !Greatness!? Greatness is for me a characteristic that makes people want to fly with you.

I guess how you define "greatness" comes down to why you fly the sim and how http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I agree with "the best players are people who can shoot you down fast , with minimum bullets", but that makes you a skillful player, but to be "great" you need something else too.

Well put Orheim, only problem is this is not so much about being a virtual pilot, but a great man/woman/person.

Even if you are an UBER ACE, without the trates listed below. I'll not spend much of my precious time, with them. The traits below is what draws me to someone, more than their skills do.

Skills are only a reason for me to go test them, from time to time, not befriend them.

Simply put,I prefure Quality over Quanity.
