Hi all,

We have Cliffs of Dover and Rise of Flight.

Where do we go from here?

I'd like a Vietnam air combat sim, and new ww2 tank sim covering all fronts with realistic everything.

This depends on what the foreigners give us next, eh Avro? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Actually, I think that air combat sims are probably going to be largely confined to niche markets - and that on the whole WWI and WWII are always going to be the most popular. Modern aircraft are just too technologically-complex for all but the most dedicated simmers, and the trend seems to be to specialise in ground attack aircraft instead - where you can at least see your target.

Pehaps combat sims need to go in the other direction - back through time. How about a 'Battle of Trafalgar' sim with CloD-level graphics? This would definitely have to be a PG game if the gore was realistic, but think of the possibilities of a Brits vs Spanish multi-ship coop in high-definition. Admiral Avro leads the fleet into a head-on attack aimed at El Commodore Raaaid's flank...

The ultimate game/sim for me would be to incorporate Silent Hunter caliber sub aspect w/Destroyer Command(OK Better) Level Surface ships. With IL2 air aspect.

It would be amazing if you could fight a real war against others in a virtual atlas. BF1942 came close but was rather arcadey in the end. it would be fun to attack a group of destroyers who are stalking a sub. Or to BE the destroyer and hunt U-boats. But have real people man everything.

I would like to see Desert campaign 40-43 with Med.
Russian front then Pacific and a 41 to early 44 , and a D-Day to Berlin.

Would love to try Dambusting in a Lanc or low flying through cavenous valleys trying to hit targets in a Mossie.

Then of course 46 and the world is your Lobster.

but CoD has only gained in popularity with youths since it went modern - CoD is gunzo combat of course wether its modern or ww2. not the same with jets v props

IL2 nearly has it all - the way foward is thru more planes maps DM & flight modelling

IL2 2.0

Both still have many issues that need fixing.

Seeing these two sims reach their full potential would make me very content. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I get your point.

What else is on the horizon?

Something else occured to me recently whilst on Cliffs of Dover. I was involved in destroying an 'enemy' aircraft and realised afterwards that I did not in general appreciate the huge amount of detail and realism available.

It's only obvious when you take screenies from a saved video recording.

Perhaps we have to go even more into immersion?

Muti-screen? Diver's Helmets? Implants?

One game I'm looking forward to is Canvas Knights. Originally it was going to be developed as a mods add-on to IL2 but about a year to two years ago, the creator decided to go with a totally different engine and it's being professionally developed by a really good company.
It will a W.W.I sim but probably not as eye candy oriented as ROF. But far more complex in other, more important ways. I'd rather have good game play than all that eye candy, plus I avoid the need to be online with schemes like Steam and all that jazz. This sim will steer clear of all that negative stuff that has turned off so many simmers like myself. I likely will never own either ROF or CloD. But I'll buy Canvas Knights. It's due out any time now, probably in two weeks.

I'd love to see made a massive multiplayer based on Cliffs of Dover that would include user controlled ground vehicles, ships and subs. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I really enjoyed playing Aces Hugh back in 2001-2004, before it became completely obsolete. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
Hard to get the excitement you get when you go rape some target deep in enemy teritory with 100+ players in your strike team. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif
Those epic 200+ planes fights were really awesome.
I would pay good money to be able to get that feeling again. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Graphically I would agree that it is obsolete, but in most other respects it is still pretty good. What puts me off is the choice of aircraft that are added to the game... The game is loaded with American aircraft, and then they added a B-29. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

Yea, what the game really needs are more Spitfire and Bf-109 variants.

I vote for the balloon sim !!!

Muskets at 100 paces in balloons http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

... and trebuchets ... imagine shooting down enemy hot air balloons online with canister shot in a trebuchet !!

+1 - but not just "Vietnam", but the wohle 50s-70s era of military aviation.

Arguably the most interesting jets (and some props) that ever flew!

Actually, I'm at a bit of a loss as to why there hasn't been a contemporary version of the old X-Wing / Tie Fighter classics, except more hard-core "sim" like. Market's ripe for it, if you ask me.

@ Brem: I like the idea of 50s-70s era jets, with the Brand New F-15s and F-16s / MiG-23s and MiG-25s just peeking out toward the end.

For me it has to be Korea. I'm really hoping Project Galba, or whatever it's called, has not died a death.

Second choice would be Vietnam. But it would have to be a BIG sim to encompass all the facets of flying fixed wing in that war. I want carriers, alpha strikes, Iron Hand/Wild Weasel missions, FAC's, spads, the lot.

But at the present time I'd be happy if they could just sort out CloD http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

What I'd like to see is an update of the 'Independence War' space sim, and a new 'Close Combat' RTS. What I liked about the IW sim because you had to use the attitude and retro boosters to maneuver as well as stop. No, I mean Stop! Like "When I say whoa, I mean WHOA!" (hits retros to no avail)

CRUNNNNNCH!

I couldn't tell you how many times I had to hit that 'replay' button.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

I still play Close Combat III because of all the RTS games I've ever played, this series had that element of uncertainty to it where I really had to consider for example, committing a squad to crossing a plowed field not knowing if there was an MG 42 emplacement in the hedgerow at the other end, especially if my forces had a scant amount of ammo left to their weapons, or they already sustained casualties earlier in the scenario. (they will however sometimes scavenge for more ammo, or an enemy weapon if their morale level is high enough) That, as well as that the AI programming would adapt its tactics to deal with yours from previous games, along with the many different mods made for it still keeps a place on my computer, so another up to date game with better graphics, etc would be even better. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
