Great news. Shame your a pitcher for us Diamondback fans because...well, mmmmmm no wait, our pitching has pretty much sucked too sooooo, if it don't work out in Philly.

Can you field?,throw? run? Hell if you have feet and can push the ball with your nose it would be a step in the right direction for us this year.

Now go put that fear away for something like when you finally propose or your 1st child is born and make the dream a reality.

Give me more data Owl!

You a Left or Right handed pitcher? What pitches do you throw? How is your control? What's your height/weight? What kind of speed is on your fastball? What kind of movement do you have on it?

Just take your time, warm up well, stretch, and feel loose. Dont over-think or let the moment get into your head. If they called you, more than likely they already like what they see (Mechanics, etc.) so half the battle is already over.

I sincerely wish you all the luck in the world. And I am sure you will do fine.

Let us know how it goes!

Let's see, I'm a 6'7" lefty. Which is why I think they're interested in the first place. At 6'7" you don't really have to be able to move too quickly lol. But I still run a respectable 7.0 in the 60 yard dash. I'm still rather thin (200-205 lbs) but I'll fill out eventually. I still have 2 years of school left to work my *** off in the gym. What I hear scouts look for is projection. If a guy is 5'6" and throws 80, chances are that's the tallest and the hardest he'll throw. But if he's goofy like me, he might just grow into his body and throw 95 a few years down the road. Which I won't be doing but it's nice to hope. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Udidtoo, I believe you just got rid of a 6'10" lefty http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Out of high school I hit 90 mph once and I think I was better then than I am now. Freshman year my coach (who recently got fired) messed with my mechanics and I've spent the past 2 years trying to get it back. Now I think I only top out mid-80's. Anyway, I've just started Alex Rodriguez's lifting program so hopefully by the spring I will be a lot stronger.

That's why I'm so nervous because I'm not back to peak performance. I'm just coming off an injury and I know that this isn't the one and only time they'll see me, but I kinda want to impress them anyway. Oh well, I will try my best.

Absolutely fantastic news! It is an honor just to be scouted and get the invite. I had an uncle who actually got drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates (catcher) in '41. He opted to join the USAAF instead and in the next few years got married and...well...never got back to the game. In his later years he missed not going back and trying out again. In short, follow the dream, and never give up!

Now as to the Phillies...being from Pgh, I hope you're traded to us, so I can get tickets to watch ya. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Simjock, a two seam fastball is held with your two fingers where the seams look like this ")(". A four seam fastball is held with your two fingers across the "C" of the seams. The difference is that the four seam fastball is used for pure velocity while the two-seam fastball moves around more - In my case, it tails away from a right-handed batter.

This happens because of Bernoulli's Principle - which I hope all of you know about being aviation fanatics. The four seams cut through the air creating a pocket with no resistance around the ball, allowing for maximum velocity. The two-seamed fastball doesnt bite the air as much being as only two seams are cutting through the air instead of four. Therefore, the wind resistance affects it more and it moves.

If I want to throw a pitch on the outside corner to a right handed hitter, or on the inside corner to a left handed hitter, I use the two seamer. It starts out over the plate and will break off and end up off the plate by a couple inches.

I also throw a 12-6 curveball and a changeup.

Treetop64 - EVERYONE gets $350k minimum no matter their position. They can be a bench player that never ever plays. Even the bullpen catchers get that much and all they have to do is warm up pitchers every game. Sounds like my kind of salary!

Well, you have the advantage. I threw high 80's with mediocre control but four other pitches including a nice split finger that would drop at the plate.

At my walk on, they checked out our run times (40), and broke up the guys into specialized and non-specialized positions. I tried out as a pitcher. But, at 6'0", and right handed, there are tons of guys that throw in the mid-high 80's. My mechanics were the only thing that got me a second look, but my size eventually killed me.

At 6'7" you will be noticed, and being left handed, even with average mechanics, you will be looked at, I promise.

As a left hander, you should try and develop a fastball that will run in on right handers. This would be a dandy pitch to have in your bag later down the road. However, left handers that cant throw that pitch almost ALWAYS have a nice slider for the same purpose. After all, that's why left handers are worth solid gold in the bigs... to run the ball in on the hands of right handed hitters.

Now, if your 2-seam runs in on left handers, that is an added bonus for you. And having a nice changeup is always an added benefit.

It really boils down to this, left handed pitching is at a premium from the minors on up. That's kind of why I worked so hard with my son. He is an early 16 now and stands 6'3". I have always stressed mechanics, mechanics, mechanics, because without proper mechanics, a kid's arm strength hits a brick wall early on and he has no room for development.

I am sure you will do fine. You sound like you have a lot of things going for you, so the only enemy you will have is yourself. Dont panic if you make a mistake. Remember that there will be other pitchers there that have more velocity (There is always someone that can throw harder than you.. hehe). Just feel confident in what you CAN do, and go and do it. Being in the right place at the right time is also important. You may be the exact type of pitcher they are looking to cultivate. You certainly have aspects that others dont, and THIS WILL get you looked at.

I dont want to say anything negative, but keep this in mind. IF this falls short of your hopes, just remember that there are other teams out there that are looking for your "Type." So, you really should get the "Life defining thought" out of your head. Your life was defined long before this day with genetics, coaching, work ethic, and desire. This day is only an opportunity, but with what you said, it wont be your last should this one fall short of your expectations.

But you can feel confident that I will have my fingers crossed for you! Now go and WOW! them!

I actually promised that I'd give that skin to the public a couple weeks ago. I've been getting asked for it and I've been really busy to fix some things on it but I'll do it right now since I have the time http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif.

I was asked to take off the head of the eagle and all my squadron stuff. I think I'm gonna release a "headless" version and a normal one, both of course without the Eagle Squadron stuff on it.

Lemme know what you think and I'll send it to you. Can you host it for me under your name on IL-2 Skins?

The bottom of the plane is in my sig and here's a shot of the side:

I just hijacked my own thread but ya know what, it's my thread so I'll do it anyway http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif

Have fun. I signed with Baltimore after college graduation in 1969, played one season of AA in the California league. Best summer job I ever had.

Hey, Owlsphone, this might sound like an old, worn cliche but what I found during a long, eventful, life is that if you want something badly enough by God you're going to get it. Hang in there and the best of luck. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Owlsphone;

Congratulations on the tryout. Best of luck. Very few of us get to do what we love and get paid for it.

I'm a bit of a Phillies fan as the Portland (OR) Beavers were their farm team for a while in the 80's. I was able to see a few stars both coming up and going down.

When you get the gig, find a way to let us know it's you, like a P-51 patch, an eagle or something. (If the team allows it).

Haha I might just take you up on that. How about when I come out of the bullpen I spread my arms and pretend I'm dog fighting all the way to the mound. VROOOOOOOOOOM http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .

This is something that I want more than anything. All I've ever wanted to to was to play baseball. I'm not the "go out and get a job after college" type. I know the desire is there. Funny thing is, last week I had a recurring dream (twice I might add) that I was told I could play for the Phillies but for some reason I couldn't let my family know to come see me because I had to get on the field. Weeeeird.

Believe me, my passion for flight equals my passion for baseball. I'll let you guys know it's me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Oh and Baldie, I'll only charge 19.99 just because it's you. Just kidding, it'll always be free.

It's guys like you who make me feel awkward. I'm a touch over 6'4", so usually I'm taller than everyone else. I don't think of myself as being taller though, I'm just used to seeing it that way. Whenever somebody about my height is around, it seems weird, and when someone is actually taller than me--much half a foot taller--it gets downright funky! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Congrats on the opportunity. Hope you make a good impression. Don't be too nervous though.

Hey, do people always say to you, "I bet you play basketball!" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

michapma, I get really really nervous around people that are taller than me too. Where I work we have basketball leagues and one guy is 7'3". I only go up to his shoulders. I always measure up against people that I think might be taller than me. It's just weird always being the tallest one around and then...not.

Razer you read my mind. If I ever made a ton of money, I'd get one of those Alienware lappys and then the SLI with the dual 6800 ultras http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif. And a Dodge Viper of course...

Congratulations and hope you make it, Owlsphone !

IIRC Curt Schilling is an avid gamer also on the PC ( I don't know if he's a flight simmer though), so if you make it you will be the second big leaguer I'll know of among the gamer community. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes it is my work. I used Avirex's template though. I have a P47 version that I did as well that I made just for 361st Eagle. I'll send em to your email p1ngu666.

I heard Curt Schilling is a huge gamer as well Tenneal. I believe he's a RTS or an RPG fan.
