Just going on the history of it here but my guess would be '41 or early '42. U-Boat losses raise dramatically from late '42 onwards. Over 80 boats were lost in '42 and over 250 boats in '43. As soon as the US enters the war the hunting should be good until the ASW and air cover gets better.

get a 9b or c and in late Dec 41- end of 41 its massacre time off the US east coast, especially around Florida and CF islands. Just sit off the US coast where the water is about 30-100mts only and you barely have to move your boat, theres a steady stream of tankers and such that just come to you.
Dont know if it was just a coincidence but I got into NY harbor and plastered the place with burning hulks but after I left I had a steady stream of aircraft attacking me all the way untill I was 150k from my homeport, it was awful diving everytime my batteries got 75% charged or less, and the destroyers were everywhere untill I got like 500km from NY, that was by far the longest patrol I ever had it was like months long.
