"Hi all,

Just got back from meeting up with Oleg and Ilya (Luthier) in Birmingham and having my first fly of SoW:Battle of Britain, which was very exciting!

We talked about lots of things, some of which I can't mention.

OK, the BoB landscape is looking really good, even though it will all be improved still further before release. It will be possible to start in hangars and taxi out to take off. You will be able to use a 40mm Bofors AA gun, which should put off the vulchers The cloud and wind modelling is fantastic - diving down the slope of a huge cloud is so atmospheric, if you will excuse the pun. And underneath that particular cloud (there are so many types) the air is sinking and you need to be really careful. Oleg showed me a demo video with tiny arrows indicating airflow and how the winds flow around the clouds. Crazy. There will be the option to jump from plane to plane at certain difficulty settings. I saw some of the ground objects and a new convoy ship - beautiful. I had a fly in the Messer E3 and Spit 1a (the Hurricane is in the game too already) and though there is much more to be done to the aircraft, it was a lot of fun having a low level fight, even though sometimes when I got behind someone Oleg would swap me over to fly the plane I had just lined up in my sights! TIR users will be pleased to know that 6 DOF is modelled and even though I don't have one, I can see it will be a huge advantage, given how much easier you can lean and then look over your shoulder. Much better than trying to peer through a headrest.

I have had IL-2 4.07m for a while so it was interesting to see how others saw it. One chap said of the Lerche "well, this is where it leaves me behind!" but once he was flying it he was fascinated. Add in the X-4 missiles and he was a convert.

One thing I would say is that at the convention, we were the ONLY ones there not flying Microsoft. There were MS virtual airlines, MS add-ons, MS cockpits (worth tens of thousands in some cases), even an MS helicopter in a truck. But quite a few people who came to have a look at IL-2 were really impressed and said they would get it - I think it was the carrier landings

The DVD2 in the IL-2 1946 pack looks really good, esp. the amazing aerobatic video! There are things I didn't know you could do with a He-162!

Anyway, I'm sure there's more to say but my brain has turned to jelly ...

"Basically this is what I found out:
OK, just got back from the show. I spent 50 minutes talking with Ilya and Oleg. Asked a lot of questions and also videod the complete session.
Oleg Maddox is an absolutely charming and genuine man and Ilya is exactly the same.
The enthusiasm they spoke about this project with really shone through.

So what do we know?

Well, airfields can now be circular rather than just a laid out runway.
Planes can Scramble from Hangars straight out onto the field and into the air.
Planes can now take-off side by side in a multiple scramble situation...looks superb.
The ground detail has been ramped up, and is still only 50% active.
Players can 'Hot Swap' from planes to anti-aircraft positions.
Clouds will now be multi-layered and at much higher altitudes.
Plane skins will be a totally new undertaking. The skin will be released as a template rather than a void, and at the moment decisions are still being made as to whether they will be 2048 or 4096.
Tracer will ricochet of solid objects like it does in gun-camera films.
They are still considering how and whether to implement a Gun Camera built into the .trk.
There will be only one file type, not sure if it's trk or ntrk, but there will be only one for all.
Oxygen masks must be put on by the pilot, you forget, you suffer.
It will be Dual Core compatible, Directx 10 is not in the support at the moment.

Now for something new:

Players will be able to create their own maps, not, I repeat not alter existing ones. Actually create new ones.
A set of tools is to be released soon after BoB release for users to make custom maps and other objects, but it will still not be open source!
There will be One bomber for Italy, 3 for Germany and 1 for Britain (Blenheim).
The UK map is at the moment created to show just above London.
Mission Builders will be able to set manual or automatic in weather settings for Dynamic and moving storm/weather fronts.

I have to say it was a pleasure to talk with Ilya and Oleg, and I never realised he was such a good photographer with his underwater work.
He was impressed with the cameras I was using, s we chatted a little about that.
Now as far as Oleg's stand was concerned, it was a shame that it was sort of out of site, you had to really search to find it, wheras Microsofts Simulator X was dead centre as you walked in!
I felt that it was such a shame that it was hidden around a corner, and therefore wasn't getting the prominence I (we) believe it deserves!
As Sid said above, it was the only Combat orientated stand at the show, everything else was landscape Generation, MFS X based, and Simulator pilots with their custom seats and overhead projectors.
It was a disappointing amount of stalls and very little of variety on show, which is why, in my opinion it was a shame that Oleg's variety was 'tucked away'.

The new Saitek X-52 Pro was on display, and TBH, it was very disappointing. As an owner of the X-52, I looked at it and it looks like a step backwards, and the feel is virtually identical to the X-52, so absolutely no reason to upgrade.

However back to Oleg, absolutely fantastic bloke, as is Ilya, and I'll try and post the video which I took (in orange light, and shot from the hip in true amateur wobbly-cam style...sorry) later on.

Cheers, MP. [/code]

as for the oxygen masks...wow

This is MysticPuma's review he posted here several months ago. He's British and met Oleg & Ilya when they came to a flight-sim convention in Birmingham (I'm still kicking myself for not going).

I see its been translated into French. Cool. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm looking very much for that flyable Bofors.
I'm liking the prospect of that baby, it has a l0t of potential.

Apart from praising Oleg and Ilya like they were going to lend him money, nothing new. We knew all this. Give us more. Pics. We want pics. And movies.

BTW, the title of the thread reminded me of some porn blogs: "Two lucky guys get to play with hot cute nurse". http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif
