Anyone who recalls the Chuck Older Flying Tiger posts on the old Yahoo Aviation link and wondered whether Mr Older was "the real deal" might be interested in the following item in the LA Times.

Gotta be the same guy -

Quote -

LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles judge who presided over the murder trial of Charles Manson and his followers has died.

Charles Older was 88. He died Saturday of complications from a fall.

A longtime friend and former law partner describes Older as "a Renaissance man" who enjoyed painting and golf. He'd also been a war hero -- serving as a pilot with the Flying Tigers and shooting down at least 18 Japanese planes during World War Two.

Manson prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi remembers Older as a man who handled the circus-like trial in a firm, fair and dignified way.

No. No it's not. I'm 34

Charles Older was a marine aviator who volunteered to fight in China against the invading Japanese. He was credited with 10 victories as a Flying Tiger, and another 8 flying P-51s for the USAAF. When the AVG was disbanded on July 4th 1942, he chose to join the Army, which was an option for AVG personell

He also had an impressive post-war career, including being the presiding Judge at the Charles Manson Trial

When I was 4 or 5, my Dad bought me a Cox tether-controlled toy plane. It had a little gas motor, and the idea was to spin round and round, using the handle on the tether, to pitch the plane up and down. It was fun

The plane was an AVG P-40, White 68, Charles Older's famous AVG machine. From that day on, he was one of my biggest aviation heroes.

I don't have my AVG reference here at work unfortunately so I can't post more right now about the real Chuck Older

When I finish When Tigers Could Fly 2.0, this username is getting retired

Rest in Peace, and fly high now that you're home, Chuck

S!

Here is a link to the AVG website, which has a thread about Chuck Older and his passing:

Some of these guys served with him. A moderator, Chuck Baisden, was an armorer for 3rd Squadron

RIP Chuck Older, another hero goes to join his comrades on eternal wings.

Kind of hard to be too sad, he was lucky to have a good full life. More a sense of closing the circle.

I wouldn't think there would be too many 88 year old "Clashaholic" flight simmers. Maybe in the future.

sorry I can't post this any larger, apparently Ubi is limiting pic size nowadays. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

No. I think Photobucket is resizing the image. You need to change the upload limit in the 'my account' section on the Photobucket main page.
If you exceed the limit it will re scale and resize it as it loads to sites.
I can adjust my options to show 1000Kb size pictures (and even upload small videos BTW).

I have a special set of coincidental connections to the real Chuck Older. I have lived the past two years of my life in the same small town he grew up in, we went to the same college, we are both naval aviators. My accomplishments, however, are a faded shadow of his. I'd be interested to see if the paper here even has anything. I'll have to alert them if they do not.

To Charles Older; "...for I have slipped the surly bonds of earth...". Rest in peace sir. You have given much to the world.

I contacted my local newspaper (here in chuck older's birthplace), and they actually called me back to possibly do a follow up story. I promised the editor some more info. Chuck, do you have any good biographies or anything you can provide.

This is from the AVG's website, it's a nice concise general overview:

http://www.flyingtigersavg.com/Bio's/bio-older.htm

A bit on Christmas Day 1941
http://www.airartnw.com/rangoonchristmas.htm

But that's just easy to find internet stuff

I'm sure all the newspapers from California circa 1971 are filled with Manson trial facts. Since Older was the presiding Judge, they could check microfiche
