How's it going?

I have a question concerning picking what planes you want to fly. In the begining when you pick your campaign, I know you can select what plane you want to fly. But once you finish that campaign and go to the next one, it seems to automaticly determine what plane you will be flying.

For example, I was playing as the Germans and started out in one of the BF-109's. When that particular campaign ended, the game automatically switched my plane into another BF-109 version. When I got this new plane, all it was was ground attack after ground attack after ground attact, while the other BF-109's (the one I was in the previous campaign) did the escorting.

If I wanted to do that, I would have chosen the STUKA.

Is there a way to change this? Do you even know what I am talking about?

Well, thanks for whatever help.

EDIT- I thought of some more questions.

What does it take to get rewards/promotions? I played European Air War and I know that took points, but for IL-2 I am not sure.

It seems like sometimes I get promoted faster in one campaign than in another, evern though I am shooting down nearly the same number of planes.

I thought I had another question, but cant seem to remember.

Ok let's get started. It sounds like you are choosing the pilot career mode. (off line campaign). These missions are set up for the player to fly what the (mission builder) creator
has planned. There is a way to change the plane set.If you unfamiliar with the Full Mission builder do not attempt! Read your book on The Full mission Builder and visit the mission builder forums. Once you get good enough or comfortable you can edit the missions and create all new missions if you like. Always back up the originals first. Each pilot carrer has different goals and suprises. So when the drop down menu appears in the DCGEN, for the country of choice Germany, read the description of the plane you might be flying. It usually gives you a few choices.
There are so many programs to choose from to edit the single missions, Pilot carrer, Multiplayer and Campaign modes that you have to read about them and ask questions about them.

Check out all the resorces when you get some free time. I happen to like Shift_E's Quick Mission Tuner the best. Build your own missions even if they stink at first, then you'll appreciate the time and effort that went into them. Good Luck http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hello and welcome to the Forum & IL-2,
I have found when going through a Pilot Career, select nationality & type of plane, start. It will list the upcoming campaigns. (example)
Germany: Fighters (Central) The Invasion Begins, Moscow 41-42 and Rzhev 42-43 and so on.
When you double click on a campaign it will list more aircraft that you can select. Choose and move to the next campaign, select and so on as far as you wish to go. After you've selected go back to the first campaign or where you want to start, highlight and begin. As you move from campaign to campaign it will allow you to fly the plane you selected earlier.
In regards to promotions, just do the best your able, they are given as the Sim sees fit.
Best of Luck & Welcome, Pooka

Cool, thanks all.

In reference to the mission building. I'll have to read those and give it a shot. But, (I'm sure this is in the info you provided but I dont have a chance to read it right now) can you make whole campaigns? And I also see that this games out of the box campaigns are dynmaic, can you keep that when you build campaigns?

Second, the changing planes. You know? When I think about it I was fooling around with the plane types before I picked a campaign, so maybe indeed I did change them and not think.

But, that brings me to another question. I somewhat know my planes. I can pick a 109 from a P-51 from a FW 190 from a F4FU etc. etc. But, the diferent variants get me. I dont know the difference between a BF-109E and a BF-109F. I know I can read about them in view objects, but is there a way to read about them while I am chosing them in the campaign? I didt stumble upon away, I would always have to note the planes, exit the campaign, read them, then go back through and start the campaign.

Is there a way around that?

As far as the rewards/promotions, thats great. I played Eurpopean Air War and it was all based off of points which made it pretty predictible.

And one more question (Sorry! I did search for some of this, but didnt really find the answers, maybe I used the wrong keywords), are you at all penalized in anyway for leaving your leader? It seems like they dont do a whole lot (some of them) and when I follow them I dont get any action, so I go off on my own. But of course I get yelled at.

DO I lose anything for doing this?

Alright, thanks again!

One at a time!

" In reference to the mission building. I'll have to read those and give it a shot. But, (I'm sure this is in the info you provided but I dont have a chance to read it right now) can you make whole campaigns?"

Yes. Quite detailed ones, within the limitations of available planes and maps. Some have been hundreds of missions long; I am currently finishing up a 68 (ish) mission long one

"And I also see that this games out of the box campaigns are dynmaic, can you keep that when you build campaigns? "

No, not really. You can make variety in the missions, but the structiure is static, they are played in an order like 1,2,3. However, it is possible to make a set of possible missions for say, mission 2 in that list I just made, and the sim will choose one out of a possible pool of missions provided for that mission 2 slot. User-made campaings are a little different in other ways, such as the squadron managemant rosters and so on that exist for dynamic campaings do not get used for user-made campaigns. However, user made campaings can feature cut-scenes, and they can use rank and awards just like the dynamic ones

" Second, the changing planes. You know? When I think about it I was fooling around with the plane types before I picked a campaign, so maybe indeed I did change them and not think. "

Could be. The instructions for the sim are vague enough to make you second guess yourself

" I dont know the difference between a BF-109E and a BF-109F. I know I can read about them in view objects, but is there a way to read about them while I am chosing them in the campaign?"

No. You may read about some of them in the 'Object viewer', but the list is incomplete. Unfortunately, your best bet is to get some referecne material from the internet, your local library, or a bookstore. I recommend Jane's Encyclopeadia of Aviation, and the Complete Book of Fighters as basic reference

" Is there a way around that?

Yes. Have a clear spot on your desk for your reference book http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

" are you at all penalized in anyway for leaving your leader? It seems like they dont do a whole lot (some of them) and when I follow them I dont get any action, so I go off on my own. But of course I get yelled at. "

No. You have suffered the worst of it when you get the message. there are no in-game penalties that stem for disobeying orders. You may however, miss flying into an area designated as a mission goal. But the mere act of flying out of formation carries no penalties

Do you know that you can use the windows key to move in and out of the game? Just something I do when selecting an aircraft.
I also use this program below. I don't know what Chuck thinks about it. I still find it helpful as a quick reference.
