OK, just ordered my copy, should arrive in a couple of days http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif So a couple of questions for you gents if you don't mind:

* What servers do you guys frequent?
* Is the dedicated game markedly better than the old UT2004 mod?

I frequent the 181st server because the guys are cool and they run armor maps. Never played the mod so I cant tell you anything on that. But my guess the retail version is much better.

I wear the same tag for RO as I do here.

Played both the mod and the retail and while they are practically identical the retail version is that bit better.

They say it's the most realistic WWII land combat simulation out there so I of course had to buy it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Barbarossa only, though, so it's the Wehrmacht vs. the RKKA were talking about here...

But OK, now I just have to beg the wife for SH3 for my birthday and that'd be me pretty well settled as regards combat sims http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

If you're free weekends, I would suggest to you this:

Iron Crescendo (http://www.ironcrescendo.net)

This is a campaign with a bunch of guys who do battles on the weekends and whatnot. We're just about to start another campaign, so hop on into the fray!

Love the realism of RO as opposed to what we see in CoD

Same name as here(and everywhere else) LT. added for "combat" just plain INST8R if Im racing or what not.
I actually havent fired up RO in a while but when I was playing alot I generally played on the FKMod server(the Armour one)
I really got hooked on the "chess game" that straight armour servers are great for(shoot, move while reloading, shoot again, get shot at etc.)
I really enjoy the "realistic" aspect of the Tanks in that its not a 1 man operation like in say BF2(I mean you "can" run it solo but when you get a good driver/gunner combo you can be unstoppable.

No I have had Steam for a few years now and in that time I have never really had any issues.
They did a big update/overhaul with at the beginning of the year and IMO its the best its ever been.

The only thing i really hate of RO is the time you require to enter-exit in a tank... I would like this requires several seconds.

Usually you hit a tank with your antiarmon weapon and you see the pilots appearing near you, killing you and in one second they are inside the tank again.

Indeed, i find its not as realistic as its hyped up to be. But its an ok game anyway. And theres so many boring maps that it makes me think back of my Wolfenstein/ET period. More arcade perhaps, but the maps were more atmospheric imo.

I've been playing for a week, here are my impressions:
It's not perfect, but it's pretty darn good, much better than COD2 or 1, big maps, good tactical gameplay and decent built in VOIP. I think the tactical squad and command elements in BF2 are better, but I prefer WWII--"The 'Good' War".

The most fun I've had so far was attacking a German held airbase in Romania maybe, Jan. '45 with 3rd Shock Army. Hooked up with a couple guys on VOIP and ever so slowly worked our way through the hanger into the control area. The coolest thing was, I only died about 4 times during the whole push, compared to about 4 times a minute playing COD2 the realism factor was significantly improved.

So far the only complaint I have is the usual one: not enough teamplay, not enough communication with teammates, and I think this will be taken care of when I get off the public servers or join a clan. I play under Zyotich, and if I've TK'd you, 'sry' again, I'm still getting used to uniforms http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Great game that just needs more good teamworkers so join up! Z

True, some maps are boring, but there are some custom maps very beautiful and immersive:

Look here:
http://www.red.orchestra.pl/plug.php?e=maps

And I agree with zyotich about the lack of teamplay: America's Army was (is?) much better since, imo, players don't want to die and wait 10 minute watching the others having fun. RO is more directed to mass fight, so you find tons of rushers and kamikazes: I like then you are defending your position and you see a guy running through the bullets with a nade in his hand... he dies but also scored 2-3 kill with that nade.

OT: some week ago I tried ArmA too.... immersive, but bugged, heavy: and arcade for all aspects except infantry. But the endless maps are so great.

Yeah, I hope Steam-type companies aren't the future of gaming, but I fear something similar. By far the most problems I've had with the game were just getting started with Steam updates, etc. A real pain in the neck.

RO is great, especially compared to COD1/2.

I played a fun map last night that was themed after the movie "Enemy at the Gates".. hoot of a good time.

I really enjoy the realistic aspects of it too. If you keep your wits you can actually stay alive for a good while. Plus I love the fact that "hip shooting" is hard to do even at close range..

Last night in one game I was happily picking off Russians when I hear a "BANG" and a hit on the sandbag next to me.. I turn around and theres a Russian standing there.. Guy tried to hip shoot me from almost point blank and missed. Needless to say.. I didn't miss http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

Anywho, I go by "Gereke" in RO. feel free to say Hi if you see me in a server.

Well, seems to have quite a learning curve to it this bugger http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I've tried my hand offline in being a Stormtrooper, a semi-automatic rifleman, a tank buster and a sniper so far & have gotten pwnz0red a lot too http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif My favorite way to perish so far has been panzer-busting with the Russian 14.5mm anti-tank rifle - very demanding but great great fun http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif And sniperism rocks too!

The game looks and feels great, apart from the bots who suck rocks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif I mean, if you thought the IL-2 AI was bad, heck, check out these guys... now this is an online game, surely, but even basic training with these *******es is sometimes sheer pain http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

But overall a great and a very realistic WWII shooter it seems. Just install it and let fly is my advice, but nevertheless pay attention to correct tactics or you won't live too long... S!

Something fun to do with the offline bots is to set it up so it's you against 5 or so bots and see if you can defend your positions against them. Make sure you up their "skill level". It's a good time. (I think you have to go to multiplayer and set up a private server to adjust the bots skill level though, it's been awhile since I've futzed around offline)

I can't speak for anybody else, but when I play online I filter out all servers that have bots in them. Some servers have bots turned on so the teams are always filled out. IMO having bots mixed in with live players takes away from the flavor of playing online.

I don't know about a mod for the bots, but you may have to come to terms with the bots on your team will never do anything you want them to.
