Ok, I am on my 22nd patrol and it's the end of 1941 and I have yet to run into anything larger than a DD. I have killed around 500k tons of all sorts of merchant shipping, but no warships beside destroyers and PTBs. Beside trying to infiltrate Scapa Flow, is it possible to run into any capital ships? Please let me know.

Yes, it is possible.

If you want to see where and when they are somewhere you could open the campaign files with the editor. There should be a Fiji class cruiser in Loch Ewe at your time.

Uh, ok...but beside looking in various ports, is it possible to encounter them in open water? Is it a very rare occurance?

The british had two Nelsons, how big is the possibility to find them in the atlantic ocean? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

One task force usually starts at Loch Ewe and patrols between Brittain, Greenland and Iceland.

Hmmm...I haven't head up towards Iceland yet. Maybe I'll do that. I'm just really surprised that I have not even run into a Light Cruiser.

I've only encountered two warships bigger than a destroyer, through August of 43. Both were north of England. I ran into a Fiji cruiser by itself once, and a Nelson in a task force with 6 destroyers the other time. I've never seen a carrier, or a Dido, or any of the other battleships.

That's because just an extremely small part of the ships were actually warships and only another small fraction of them are battleships. They won't send out battleships or carriers on their own and will organize them into task forces which will lower the possibility of you finding them even further.

And always remember that all german uboats together only sank like three battleships and two carriers. It was the merchant fleet that was the main enemy, not the battleships. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I did find a taskforce containing King George V and Repulse battleships in CG89 late 1942.
Also sunk a Brogue (I think?) escort carrier in 1944 off NW Ireland (AM??).
Thats out of 30ish missions though.

I actaully stumbled onto a Revenge and a Nelson, escorted by a number of destroyers, on the wee-morning hours of the 12th day of my very first patrol. This encounter was the first I had with the enemy since starting!

They were in quite a hurry, as the fleet was steaming along at 21 knots (which equates to maximum warp for the Nelson). I managed to put two into the port side of the Nelson at long range. However, following a brief stop after absorbing the torpedos, she got underway again and managed to escape.

The pyrotechnics displayed by the escorting destroyers after the Nelson got hit (searchlights, flares) were quite spectacular to watch! Of course, they were much too far away to have any chance of detecting me, so I just sat back and enjoyed the fireworks viewed in the periscope.

I ran in a BRITISH cruiser in the med, south of La Spezia, sank it, and more 3 of it's escorts http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Saw my first light carrier last night, sank it with 4 torps, I think it was coming to the rescue of the convoy I had been pestering for a day or so.

I was shadowing the convoy after my initial strike to get some more torps below when it arrived just northeast of ireland. It was making course straight for the convoy. If the carrier and its escorts were responding to my attacks that would be pretty feckin cool, even if it was coincidental it was still cool.

Ships do call for help http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

And, as a last resort, you can always resort to single missions (there's one entitled Malta Convoy in which you can have a go at Nelson/Rodney) or create your own missions in the mission editor.

I've said this on this forum before, but I feel like saying it again, since it was a once in a lifetime occurence (in terms of this game)...

I'm cruising along at 9 knots on the surface in my trusty VIIB, all of a sudden I hear my WO yell "We're Taking Damage" I run up to the conning tower and Scan the horizon, nothing in sight. Then I hear some "pounding" and as I shift out of binocular view about 15 shells land on all sides of my boat. The thought that went through my head was "Uhhh... Ok? CRASH DIVE!!!!!" When I level out at periscope depth I go to silent running, my Sonarman reports multiple warship contacts to the northwest. Apparently I had just run into a TF in the middle of the Atlantic, head on which consisted of one either Queen Elizabeth type or Hood (I don't remember) and one KGV type. "Holy sunufabeach". Unable to resist the temptation to attack I plotted an intercept that would put me in a firing position about 2000 yards away. I was hoping to just disable a BB so I could go deep reload and make another run. My tubes were loaded with 2 TIs and 2 TIVs. I slid in between two DDs and when I brought my scope up again I was at a perfect 90 degree angle on the KGV and about 80 degrees on the Queen Elizabeth, both about 1000 yards away. I fired my T IVs in the general direction of each hoping to disable one or both and set up firing solutions for m TIs, they have visible wakes but running at 44 Knots they cover 850 yards (now) in only 38 seconds, too little time for two BBs to react. So I fire both, one at each. The immediatly dive to 100 meters and drop decoys and try to avoid the wrath of the destroyers. I go to my outside cam (which I only use to watch ships sink, not "cheat" around DDs. And I watch as the KGV first gets hit by an TIV that disable two of its screw, followed by the TI hitting dead center a few seconds later and a thunderous explosion as the entire superstructure incinerates itself. The Queen Elizabeth was also hit by the Acousitc, which knocked off her rudder and was soon followed by the TI that also hit dead center and caused the funnel to collapse into the deck, as well as completley disable it, only to be followed 5 minutes later by her sinking. When I returned to port, my crew got about 30 different types of medals, I was awarded the Knights Cross.

On a serious note, imagine how furious the admiralty would have been if in reality a rather inexpensive U-Boat had robbed them of two heavily escorted Battleships after the TF had caught her on the surface.
