As a novice on-line pilot I have been flying the Spit LF MkVb 1942, I luv it, but it seems to have limited ammo and firepower, it's not very often that I hit anything, so when I do I want to cause some damage! what are your suggestions for an alternative?

The Spit seems easy to fly, and is very forgiving, I fly full switch for flight settings.

I agree on ammo load but the weird thing is its the only thing I can hit anything with and consistanly get a solid hit. I suck with 50 cal. and a nose cannon is out of the question for me. I love the US planes with a passion but I can only gt good hits with the British aircraft.Guess I was born on the wrong side of the pond. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/53.gif I miss the the way the Hawker used to fly http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Probably stating the obvious here, but maybe a bit of practice with the gunnery skills might help ?

I like the Spits, they fly pretty well and will turn until the cows come home but they do have pretty small ammo loads. The trick is to fire in small bursts at either wing roots, engines or the cockpit area.

Hope this helps http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I agree with toads comment.
The Spit has limited ammo but a very stable gun platform.
I use carefully aimed short bursts cannons and M/Gs at the same time . use the spits agility to get in close. I can get 3 or 4 kills per mission (on and offline) using these tactics.

Inside every American is a Brit trying to get out! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif LOL.

I love the spit, even the early `41, although I was getting creamed on a dumb `free-for-all` server yesterday against those FWS `43 and LA5s and other later models.

The trick is get close, convergence around 200 (everyone has their best). When you are close and on target fire a GOOD BURST. I got real close yesterday and took the wing off an aircraft with that tactic (unfortunately I can`t remember what it was). I must have hit it right on it`s wing root cos it just came clean off!

Yeh forgot to mention if used properly in short burst and use cannons only at a perfect shot set up you will have enough ammo. I seldom get the perfect shot though http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif You've got it backwards. We took care of the getting out in the 1770's http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

If anyone feels that they'd rather be flying US planes, but they prefer the Spit, it may comfort you to know that US fighter groups in N. Africa and Italy were regularly flying Spitfire Vs in USAAF livery in 1943. They were supposed to have Mustangs, but production hadn't reached the units everywhere yet. Later on, they got their Mustangs.

SeafireLIV mentioned it, but set your convergence low (200m or less) and be very disciplined in your shot selection. Fire only when you think you can hit, etc,...

You might want to try the Hurricane MkIIc. It's slightly more stable than the Spit, and while it doesn't hold too much ammo it packs a bigger punch.

I'm almost ashamed of my fixation with the Bf110 too, it doesn't fly nearly so well as the Spit (good climb and dive speeds if you keep the revs right though), but if you arm it with the Mk108's and Mg's pretty much anything you hit is toast.

Yes, and from what I hear they were quite sorry to give up their Spitfires! Especially those groups that were converted to Thunderbolts.

BTW, some USAAF groups in Britan used Spit V's. I think they were the former Eagle squadrons.

I like the Spit too. Those cannons are really good close in. Contrary to what I've seen others note, I don't find them too hard to down.

For about a week, probably by coincidence, I was constantly going up against Spits on line with my P-38. Each one of them, without fail, agreed to go head-on with me. A well placed stream from the 38 did many of them in.

You'd have to be nuts to fly head on towards a P-38 in any aircraft http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

Same goes for the Bf110.

Well if you have AEP istalled correctly, and there is nothing else wrong. Just go into QMB and choose it. Or you can host your own Online stock Dogfight map and fly them. YOu don't even have to be online to fly the online maps. Or get on Hyperlobby or UBI game service and find a server that has them available. Of course you couldd make some missions with FMB or even download some missions to play single player of coop with them aswell.

Good luck

Tks, had convergance at 300, reduced to 200, seems to be much better, odd it would make that much difference, perhaps I was just lucky (most likely explanation).

Tried LA7, KI84, P63, Lagg3, FW190 but I do luv the Spit, so sticking with it, I dont fly with CP what are it's advantages?

Anyway in new patch will latest Spit have more ammo load/firepower?

Yeah, those pesky 190's slipped my mind http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You're right though - a tooled up A-8 carries a lot of firepower... fairly speedy for its weight too
