But another household work, the highly propagandized Me 109G, was obsolete when it was built and was aerodynamically the most inefficient fighter of its time. It was a hopeless collection of lumps, bumps, stiff controls, and placed its pilot in a cramped, squarish cockpit with poor visibility.

I am quite surprised at the reaction to this whole thing.

These guys have put together a brilliant business plan.

*They setup a family of websites for a relatively small cost.

*They post their plan on said websites.

*People then donate the funds required to obtain the various products.

*They smash them and film the results.

*They post the whole lot on their website and reap undoubtedly considerable rewards in advertising revenue.

They aren't iconoclasts because at the end of the day their goal is obviously to make money which they will undoubtedly spend on consumerism. They aren't smashing the golden cow but merely producing a new liturgy based upon sacrifice.

To quote from their FAQ

That question seems to pop up a lot. Im not going to steal the money because if I actually do this, I can make a lot more money selling the video rights, and advertising inside the actual video. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

They started with an iPod. Now they've smashed all of the next-generation consoles. Each time, people have donated the money. Each time they've almost certainly made money from their videos. There are plenty of other desirable consumer goods out there - this could run and run. Chances are they'll repeat the process with every fad people have to wait in line for...

There was once a ceremony performed by American Indians: it was called a Potlatch.

During this ceremony, those individuals who possessed considerable wealth would demonstrate that extent by taking valuable objects and destroying them in front of the community.

But now days, with so much inequality in the world, the middle classes in the US, and western Europe eroding in the face of higher energy costs, it simply seems such a foolish waste to me.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I so completely approve of their actions. True I must agree that they could have donated the unit to a Sick kids cancer ward, or a monetary equivalent. But I think that in using the power of the web to distribute what many will conceive as their underground and subversive message, their money will be MORE than well spent.

If it liberates a handful of people from their gotta have it consumer greed mentality, and/or gets people talking about such issues then I am more than for it.

I saddens me that people are such clay that they allow themselves to be so successfully marketed to that they would be willing to stand in line for hours/days, participate in a riot, to risk their lives to defend their PSP3 money (all incidents that have been reported in the media)
All for a hunk of plastic and a few circuit boards, which will be obsolete, by design of the manufactures, so that they can repeat the cycle all over again.

If somebody did that to us about'46 I would be well pleased too! We should be ashamed of ourselves. If we don't get it the first second, hour.day it is released. It is no big deal. Get it the day, week, month after. The world will keep turning.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

reminds me of that scene in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas where Thompson and his "lawyer" smash up their car prompting the locals to freak out. These two cats hate themselves, yet fit in fine since everyone else in Vegas seems to hate themselves too. What makes them stand out is the act of destroying their own property. good scene<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Their business plan is indeed brilliant; they have covered their major costs with donations, and therefore stand to make a massive profit on a tiny investment. As for the destruction, that's how business works. People destroy perfectly good trees to make furniture, paper, flooring etc. People destroy perfectly good animals for food and clothing. People destroy perfectly good fossils to provide the energy which fuels the rest of this destruction. People frequently destroy perfectly good aeroplanes to make tin cans. People destroy perfectly good houses only to replace them with more houses.

People destroy the perfectly good time given to them working in jobs they don't enjoy.

Indeed, people frequently destroy perfectly good people in order to manufacture money or power.

What then is so shocking about somebody destroying a perfectly good PS3 in order to make some money?

One of the most interesting things about human society is that we have made taboos out of sex, death and defecation despite the fact that we are all the result of sexual activity, we will all die and we all defecate. It is as though we as a society wish to deny the very nature of our existence.

That fighter aeroplane in your sig was fitted with a large number of machine guns, (possibly it was subsequently retrofitted with cannon), and was designed with the sole purpose of destroying other similar aeroplanes, their pilots and, later in its service life, people and equipment on the ground. It is representative of destruction on a massive scale, and yet you consider the destruction of a single PS3 to be both shocking and somehow a damning indictment against our society in which your sig is acceptable. Surely that approach to priorities is itself slightly sick?

At the end of the day, that PS3 was not designed to last forever. During the course of this century probably 99% of the PS3s manufactured will share its fate by accident or design. These guys have come up with an idea which exploits the rather strange taboos within our culture to make more money from the destruction of a desirable item of consumer electronics than they could possibly make from its 2nd hand value. It makes good business sense, even if lots of people don't like it. Welcome to the real world.

As for the question of the sickness or otherwise of our society, I am not really certain that the concept has any meaning in the context you intend. Anthropomorphism has a way of messing up sound reasoning...

Hard to control people, make them jump hoops, through things that may never affect them.
But then again in early societies on up the majority seem to need being led around badly
so what we get is being led around, badly.

The two universal taboos are murder and incest, btw, and those get practiced anyway.

EDIT: some of the ticket price I spent to see "The Blues Brothers" went towards the destruction
of something over 200 police cars for one extended chase scene. I've seen films where whole
houses were destroyed and didn't get upset. I laughed.

Consider if you've watched and reacted similar to just how many such movies and still posted
shock here just why you did. Because that's the tone of the thread and your nose pointed in
the same direction? Baaa-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

In 6 months, that thing won't be worth the plastic it's made out of. Most of the people buying it will hardly ever play it, and never come close to justifying the purchase price.

I'm glad they didn't let this one go to waste, and made a pointed comment about consumerism.

somehow I doubt any pointed comments about consumerism reached anyone but the people who want to preach how sick our society or consumerism is...

most likely most of the people watching that video or the people at the spot were just laughing at the 2 morons wasting money, time and hoping to do something controversial and get a reaction out of it.

and yeah it is laughable.

and like someone already said, bigger and better things are already being destroyed for entertainment so this really isn't anything spectacular. It's just an internet fad... 2 years from now nobody will even remember this happened.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

One of the main reasons I wait at least 6 months to a year+ to buy new consoles when they are released. And never, ever buy one before Xmas.

I love my PS2 and my kids have a GameCube. There is a certain ease of play that I find appealing from a console, especially when I don't have to mess with drivers or other programs to get each new game to run right. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I enjoy my PC for my Combat Sim, but Madden Football and Gran Turismo are played very comfortably from my couch. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Did you see how many hits that PS3 took from that sledgehammer and still remained relatively intact?!?! Ahhh, the internet. What a lovely way to raise kids. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif </div></BLOCKQUOTE>yea 1 hit whoooho </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Yeah, but that 1 hit didn't do the damage one would expect. He took some pretty good whacks at it and it remained pretty intact as a whole. Sure, it probably wasn't functional after the first hit, but I'm just speaking of the structure and what I saw. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Ah now having watched that I thoroughly enjoyed seeing my old home and take some small satisfaction in knowing that it was done by Canadians(I feel that Canadians are a little less "led" then other North Americans)<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

having to hunt or farm for basic survival made us strong - now look at the human race in modern society....ahhh progress.

A more rational, less 'advanced' society would have killed and eaten those 'tards at birth...
