No worries. I've voted #1.

If only we could get them to change the default skins for the late model A6M's while they are at it. Compared to the Shiden & Raiden they are markedly inferior. I have yet to see a single photograph of a navy interceptor with THAT much paint peeling off. On Army aircraft that were delivered in bare metal, the field applied paint was not applied to a primed surface and so flaked off easily. Navy A6M's (and others) had a tough redddish primer coat before the factory top-coat was applied. This gave excellent adhesion and was responsible for much less visible wear and tear.

Offline is OK. I just change the skins. But when you play online and see all those sandblasted zeroes with great big numbers on their sides......Sheesh.

Hey! My first rant.

It's really in the mail, you'll get it soon- Be sure!

lmfao, P1ngu's right on this one, we need the added gun to make it CORRECT.

for those of u who dont feel its a big thing, please fly your plane and not use your machine guns. ever. this is also the best zero, on blance, so its very important. zero goes against some of the toughest planes aswell, i dont think it would matter if a corsair only had 5mg, but imagine the stink that would kick up .

I just voted for 1. Well all sources of historians who're specialized on the Zero would confirm, that the Model 52b was the only Zero fitted out with 3 calibres armament. 2x20/1x13.2mm(right side of fuselage)/1x7.7mmleft side of fuselage. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

true hawk, but if its made with correct fm data, which it should be, then its currently overweight for its given firepower.
adding the 7,7mm would marginal slowing down when fireing, thats it as far as i can see http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Is the above example an operational a/c or not?

The above picture is not answering the question without proper context. You can find Shidens that look worse, although no one's flying them...

EDIT:
Notice the crate above is missing its gunsite, already an indication that this was not an operational fighter.

Must agree that compared to the other IJN fighters, the late Zeroes feel sort of rushed in the paint shop department. It would be nice to see new default skins.

OTOH, we get a new F2A, but within 3.03 they didn't even bother to add the new type in the USMC campaign, I mean where's the logic in that?

Some people are looking for info on the minutest of detail to create a cockpit for a new a/c, yet others with the project seem to have their head so deep up their or at least someone's ****, that they do not know the difference between light and day anymore.

About time someone starts looking at other details than object detail alone. Great we have a new AA cannon, great we now have a new plane, but where is much of the game?

Whats operational got to do with the way the paint comes off? I would think a 300mph airplane will chip off cheep paint in one sortie!! Try flying through the rain with a cheep paint job.

Although that Shiden does show a resonable amount of wear, it still isn't even close to the default A6M5b,c,7-62,7-63 skins. Take a look and compare.

I've read that non-homeland forces were very short on supplies, including proper aircraft quality paint towards the end of the war, resulting in those kinds of patchwork and partly baremetal IJA fighters. Phillipines and Burma seem to be the main two places that get mentioned as having this problem. Anyone know for sure? Any operational aircraft photos clearly showing them in this state?

Many if not most IJA types were per default bare metal and camouflage was applied in the field, a practice which ran thoughout the whole war.

The IJN Shiden in general was only painted on upper surface, the lower surface was left bare.

You see a clearly transitionaly phase with the IJN during 1942 when they changed from one tone Ame-iro (grey/green/caramel) to two tone darkgreen and grey camouflage. The transitional period is very weakly depicted with the A6M3 we have in PF, when Ame-iro delivered a/c were given extra camouflage paint in the field. Actual examples are quite interesting to see, often hand painted (if not all). I must admit that I was disappinted when I first saw the A6M3 in PF, especially compared to most of the later skins in the series. But too be honest I saw more of these "regresive" paintjobs on the Japanese side of PF.

Of course this is often a matter of taste, but although most of the AEP/PF default skins look very good, the F2A, A6M, Ki43 and Ki61s look rushed.

Feathered_IV

Very well put Ruy.

I understand that some Raiden also left the factory with bare metal undersurfaces and the top coat wrapping around the wing leading edges and cowling lip. It is also conceivable that the Zero may also have had similar treatment, although I can't confirm it. Perhaps this was only for land based Naval interceptors.

With regard to the early ame-iro finish. I have seen wrecks of these aircraft which have lain out in the elements in the New Guinea jungle for 40 years. After this time the top-coats have almost completely worn away. Leaving just the red primer coat (and hardly any bare metal patches). Usually those that are devoid of their primer are those located out in the kunai where the grass fires flay the paint right off.

I agree about the gun, and voted No. 1. Hope it does some good.
I also agree about the late-model default skins. The ones I paint for myself are dirty, but have most of their paint, for the reasons Feathered listed.

For the purpose of bumping, and to add yet another issue to the mix:

What about the waypoint indicators on the A6M5s and 7's? On the 2's and 3's the indicator is centered when you're on course. You get no such reading on the later zekes:

http://home.centurytel.net/dennisfaught/graphics/grab0001.jpg

Which is correct?

Is that a waypoint indicator? Thanks! I didn't know that.

As a bit of a bump for the Zero pit and in the interests of the further dissemanation of information; Here is a link to the best source of IJN pics on the net: http://www.ijnafpics.com/index.html

If you havent been there before you are in for a real treat! Take a look through the 18 pages of Zero photographs and try to find anything like our default A6M5c skin (Not including the field applied two-tone Saipan ones http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif).

Bump + question:

Sorry, I don't have PF yet, so: AFAIK some late versions of A6M5 had 2 x 20mm cannons in the wings, 2 x 13,2mm mgs in the wings, and 1 x 13,2mm mg and 1 x 7,7mm mg in the cowling. (pretty strong firepower IMO) Can somebody provide me with ammo quantity for each of those weapons?

Thnx
