Ok after some resentment at paying full price for another addon I ended up getting PF (like it wasn't going to happen). In short I think its great, I love the carrier ops, the new aircraft and missions.

But I am a little dissapointed....
Firstly I was hoping there would be some ground activity, the only people you see are those running away from stricken planes/vehicles, airbases are still ghost towns.

Aircraft gunners are still extremly accurate...

AI planes can catch fire and burn for ages yet my plane usually explodes within 20 seconds of catching fire.

The Pearl Harbour Bomber mission in the Japanese campaigne is a little shallow, wheres all the other planes? Can count maybe 10 in the near vicinity but nothing like the mass assualt that was dropped on the Pacific Fleet.

Only little whines, it has raised the bar of pc flight sims a fraction higher. And has cemented itself as the greatest pc flight sim series ever.

LOVE

All the new planes, especially the bombers.
Sliding canopies
Runs just as well, if not better than FB
Nice new career missions
Carrier stuff

Dont love at all
Hellcat and Wildcat et al cockpits....I thought after seeing the Gladiator pit things were definately on the up http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
Lack of jap planes...OMG he said the J word!
Only two new maps in QMB
Maps too small for real pacific ops

On the whole tho its a pretty good game and a nice improvement on FB.

My 2 penneth.

Now I don't know how many plane took part in each wave, but I am sure it was more than the dozen or so that you see in the mission..

And as you say that is very much of a let down, now if they are claiming 120 odd planes can be in the online game, then I can't see why there's not at least the same amount in the offline one..

Though that said I have my doubts about seeing 100 plus planes in the online part , I had slight stutter in the career mode when I was one of about half a dozen fighters going up to face about the same of the enemy or they may have had a handful more ..

Anyway by the time I got up and flew towards the dogfighting planes about 12-15 , I got stutter..

Now if its like that when your heading towards less than 20 planes , then imagine what it would be like if about 12 of you had to take off and face about 60 or 70 or more inbound enemy planes, and Online at that!

Now not the fast rig on the block these days, but not bad , and if I get stutter approaching about 15 dogfighting planes, what chance do I have Online where I can face up to 100+

AI cycles for that would take up a lot.
120 players online doesnt tax your system as much as 120 planes in game, that the Computer is having to tell where to go. I had the same problem in Call of Duty. The single player game ran like a German with a leg wound, but Multiplayer was buttery smooth most of the time.
I'm assuming that this was a compramise to keep the mission playable on most systems, although i agree that more planes would be better.
But hey, someone's bound to come out with a "real pearl harbor" mission soon http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Maybe you haven't seen photos of actual Wildcats or Hellcats' cockpits--they're extremely plain, stark, functional, or if you prefer, standard US Military hairy assed ugly, with puke (zinc chromate) green highlights. It would be hard beyond my imagining to make them as aesthetically attractive as the J8 'pit and still be accurate.

You want aesthetics, try the P-40B/C or Japanese Army cockpits. The 'Cats' cockpits are as ugly as the originals. This is not intended as an attack or criticism of you, but more of a correction of an inaccurate impression.

cheers

Yep, it has to be downloaded skins and markings off for the Zero every time. The default Val & Betty are much better, with the numbers on the tail where they should be.

Cheers!

That depends on what chance you give them http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Seriously though, stick to average quality bomber crews, they will wack you if you are sloppy but you can beat them if you make sensible attacks. Veteran or Ace is a bit silly mind.

i love the corsair cockpit is perfect you see well the nose and dont mind not being able of leaning the head to look backwards because you have a mirror if all cockpits were like that more people would fly cockpit on

and i only hate the few servers with cockpit on

Was hoping for some flyable torpedo bombershttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

And I don't like the realism settings in quick mission builder that only lets you fly planes that were in that theatre. IL2 and FB you could fly 262's against biplanes. Dumb but it was funhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Isn't that only for one of the new maps...because the map has no land bases? Only carrirers and therefore restricts the player to carrier capable planes?

Not sure...just what I heard.

Yeah, Okinawa has the full plane set but Coral Sea is carrier planes only.

as someone said... there will be one of the mission builders working on a better 'Pearl Harbor' mission right now.... but will it be flyable?

I think we have to realise that the software is ahead of the hardware at the moment

this time next year with 64 bit, dual-core, and dual CPU technology coming out we should be much better off... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

One of my favorites was trying to shoot down an Me 262 in a P.11c. Let them overshoot you, then flame their engine with your peashooters.
